2011/12 Togwotee snow conditions

we have been here since sunday. we have had all bluebird days, warm day time temps, fridgid night time temps. the snow pack is settling, avy danger is stabilizing. you can see lots of natural slides on many different terrain aspects.

the guides are doing a great job at finding fresh untouched stuff but, be forwarned.... it hasnt snowed much in a while, and ALOT of easy access areas are tracked up to the max. you have to work to find clean riding snow.

shaded spots, and the trees have the softest snow right now. alittle fluff on top in most areas, then a crust, then sugar underneath. depending on where you are, you can walk on top, or sink to your waist or deeper.

the super clear days are great for scenic views atop the tallest peaks. the tetons towering above us daily, are an impressive sight to say the least. one of natures miracles, for sure.

here are a few pics from yesterday. ski

You've pretty much hit the nail on the head for conditions down around Crooked Creek and the Union Pass area, too. Still plenty of snow to find what you're looking for & have some fun. Hope to see plenty of riders down this way...stop in at Crooked Creek for lunch or fuel and say hi!

Looks like about 8-10" on top of fresh to start today with some more in the forecast. Good ridin yesterday

Hey guys just wondering how the snow conditions are out in togwotee? Heading somewhere this weekend but not quite sure where to go.

Togwotee Helicopter Crash

I just read the news here in MN and am trying to fiqure out what happened to the MN snowmobiler killed out in Togwotee I believe yesterday. Apparently a helicopter came to the rescue, but that crashed and killed one rescuer on board as well. This is a sad deal in our great sport. Anyone know what happened?

Thanks and Safe Riding!

LANDER — A veteran member of Teton County Search and Rescue responding to a snowmobile accident was killed Wednesday in a helicopter crash on Togwotee Pass.

Ray Shriver, 63, died when the helicopter in which he was a passenger crashed about 6.7 miles south of Togwotee Mountain Lodge, according to a news release from the Teton County Sheriff’s Office.

Another search and rescue team member and the contract pilot of the chopper were injured and taken to St. John’s Medical Center in Jackson for treatment, the release said. Their identities and conditions were unavailable Wednesday evening.

The three were the only people on board the helicopter when it crashed.

The helicopter was leaving the scene of a fatal snowmobile accident when it went down, the sheriff’s office release said.

Teton County Dispatch received a call at 11:48 a.m. reporting a snowmobile accident on Togwotee Mountain, the release said. The helicopter responded at 12:24 p.m., landed at the accident scene, confirmed the condition of the victim and left the scene with plans to return with additional personnel, the release said.

The snowmobile party, which was made up of the victim’s family and friends, remained on the scene.

After leaving the scene, the helicopter headed south when it “appeared to experience difficulty.” It then went over a ridge, disappearing from the sight of the snowmobile party, which contacted Teton County dispatchers to notify them of the situation.

Radio contact was lost for about 45 minutes, during which time Teton County Search and Rescue began assembling a team for a ground response. When contact was re-established, the crew confirmed they had crash landed, the release said.

Grand Teton National Park assisted rescue efforts for the helicopter crew, sending an additional helicopter and rangers to the scene, said park spokeswoman Jackie Skaggs.

“We’re helping to rescue the rescuers,” she said.

A unified command center was established at the park, she said.

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office also helped, said Teton County Public Information Officer Charlotte Reynolds.

Once all helicopter victims were evacuated from the scene, Teton County sheriff’s deputies went to the scene of the initial incident, which had resulted in the death of 53-year-old Steven Anderson of Morris, Minn. Details of Anderson’s accident were unavailable Wednesday night.

The causes of both crashes are under investigation.

We just got back about 20 minutes ago! Overall the trip was awesome. Still a few landmines to watch out for but the snow was good. Out of nine sleds we only lost one a-arm. It was snowing when we left. Ill post some pics tomorrow hopefully.

Received over a foot last night and the riding yesterday was unreal if you know where to go. Today everything should be great. Supposed to get close to 3 feet when it's all done.
