2011/12 Snowy Range snow conditions

Great Snow, Just have to get off of U trail!

Haven't been on in a while cause I live right here on the range...but needed to get a positive view out there cause I've overheard people at dealers and all over Laramie saying they are posting bad reviews (Even using aliases) so that nobody out of state will come ride "their mountain"! What they don't realize is if nobody wants to come up here...then businesses are going to be shutting down...so I guess keep it up if you don't want a place to eat or sleep on this mountain cause that's where everyone in Centennial is headed right now if this keeps up!

I will never post anything good unless I would go ride it myself, everything I say about the snow will be the gods honest truth, so you can take my word for what it's worth. Just got tired of people saying it sucks up on the range. It's not as awesome as the 2010/2011 season was...but that's going to be tough to beat ever!

Base is averaging 3-4 feet on the south side and 4-5 on the north side.

We have been getting a storm every week that doesn't do a lot in Centennial itself, so riding from Centennial might be a ways out still, but the mountains seem to get at least 6" to a foot every time especially on the north side.

Anybody that's looking to come up and use U trail as their primary trail to get to snow...don't bother. You have to get off this trail if you want to have a good time. The majority of good snow is either along V trail/ North french creek area or further north up the mountain. When I say further north I mean...GO NORTH. Widowmaker and riding around that area is still a little scarce, not terrible but not great. The greatest is up around Sand Lake and Deep Creek area which is further up north on O trail around O,P, and Y

Still need to watch yourself getting up to these areas cause it's only a 5 foot base right now at most and the "Rockies" have much larger rocks then that! But if you just watch yourself you want have any issues.

I'm posting three pictures...the first is at the the North end of North French Creek just dropping down into what is called "7 Fools" if anyone is familiar with that area up here, and it was taken on January 1st 2012. The second was just south of Sand Lake on the North end of the mountain up close to where O and P intersect, and it was taken on January 6th 2012. The third picture was taken North of Sand Lake area off of Y trail and was taken on January 14th 2012

We just got a storm yesterday, January 16th 2012, and we are getting some sun and wind today but have over 30% chance of snow for 7 days out of the next 10 day forecast.

If you'd like a reliable link towards pictures, rider reports, links to snotel sites, and a link to the most accurate weather forecast for the Range (Cause most weather sites give you Laramie's weather even when you ask for Centennial.) check out oldcorral.com it's all right there on the front page that you'd be looking for.

I will try to keep up with posting more as we get it so we can stop the locals from trying to turn everyone away from a mountain that is large enough to be shared with any and everyone!

Sorry for the long post, hope it helped if you are planning a trip this direction!

Another location for good information: http://www.srscwy.com/RidingConditions.htm.

As for the rest, I sure hope that is not the case. Currently sales of tags in the state are down to something like 9000. State trails program is already struggling, and if this continues there will be no more trail system.

Yes this year is nothing like last year or even the year before that. But lets face it riders go where the snow is. People are just not spending the money to ride on dirt and pavement to get to the snow.
I wish it were not the case, we need the revenues from visitors to help the business and the trails program!

It would be interesting to see if numbers were down in other locations as well!

We're still planning to come out. We couldn't buy a flake here this year if our lives depended on it. :face-icon-small-dis

Snowies!

hi guys, I have a trip planned out for feb 8 - 12. we usually stay in centennial. my question is if we stay there and ride out of green rock, are we all going to need new carbides when we come home? love the snowies and we have never stayed on the west side. suggestions???:face-icon-small-con

No you won't be looking at new carbides or really by that time you probably won't have to worry about anything! The biggest thing right now is up on Libby flats on U trail it is down to the asphalt...which is the case most of the time unless we get the 40 feet of snow like we got last year. So right now I'd say the best would be to either take O trail up North which is where the majority of good riding is or drop off U to the south a couple miles up then ride the tree line (Which has great fingers to play in) all the way to T trail...then you can choose to come up to U, go down North French Creek, go South (I've heard decent riding reports from W trail) and you will have avoided all the asphalt.

Flyin-Bryan - please point out the alias posters for snow conditions.

Also, please provide a little more info on yourself because 4 posts doesn't make you any more legit than the "aliases", or maybe someone with a longer history on this forum can vouge for you (if so, please speak up).

I know everyone would appreciate it.

Thanks.

Coldfinger-

Yeah I know where your coming from. Like I said, living up here I've never really needed to know what everyone thought about the snow cause I'm right here...I can tell the good versus the bad times to ride.

A little info on me...my name is Bryan I've lived just above Centennial since 1993, riden the mountain since 98 and am a very avid snowmobiler. I manage the Old Corral Hotel & Steakhouse in Centennial now (I know you could be thinking that I'm just saying what I do to get business here...but I'm not i swear...I'll tell you when it's bad too) I'm not the kind of business person that's going to tell you what you want to hear just to get you here. Cause if it's not good and you don't enjoy it...you won't be back. I'd rather turn someone away from bad snow and lose the little business that way then to lose all future business from you. It's the type of honesty I'd expect from anywhere I made hundreds of dollars in reservations to come ride at. Unfortunately if I don't give the honest report though...it could mean the end of a lot of businesses in Centennial cause winter is our best season and what keeps us thriving. As many members as SnoWest has...if enough people say enough bad things when they aren't true...it can cut the mountains business substantially!!

The aliases...I can't pick them out unfortunately...I really wish I could. I've only ever overheard enough people talking about doing it that way as far as keeping people off this mountain so that it stays a secret. There is also word that snowmobile haters (Which we have enough of in Centennial unfortunately) are becoming enough of a member on the site to post anything that might help keep us away.

Anyone who does know me...I'd love to have the back up on here as to how liable of a source I am because anyone who knows me knows I wouldn't lie about the snow. I want you to come out here and invite me out with you! Haha!

I for one don't think it's the problem your making it out to me. Looking back over the last month of post to the thread, there are very few that are newbies, and most have been on here and posting regularly for years. The one that are on here regularly are the ones asking what conditions are like. To say that any of the post are aliases, would be making a huge assumption. Most other post asking for conditions get the standard pay the "premium user"read response. I would also bet that less than five percent of the riders even read or religh on these forums for thier information.

I maintain that the snow levels are what are keeping people away. Face it unless you live in Alaska the snow has sucked up until the last week or so with the new storms, even then it is still marginal. And to say otherwise would be foolish, in previous years the warming huts were pulled in in mid December. This year it was mid January before we were able to even stock them. Why? Low snow on the trails.

It will get better as the snow starts to fall. Hang in there were all wishing for more!

Flyin-Bryan,

Thanks for the clarification as to who you are. It helps everyone understand your viewpoint better and lends it more validitity.

Thanks Bryan for the post. I've heard the same stories. I've stayed at your condos and the motel and I know that you come from an honest family. A group from my club are up there right now, and from all reports, they are having a good time.

Lack of snow is keeping people away at this point. It is rideable un-arguably however, most on this site are looking for over the bumper careless carving IMO. Everybody knows they can get out and ride but with all the lack of base it keeps you on edge.

As for the alias's I keep a close eye on posts made from same IP's and there have been a few. They have been delt with as that is breaking the rules.

There is also several VERY reputable posters and I will drop Dans name here as people read his reports and have similar riding styles so they put ALOT of weight into what he says.

This forum is for people that want info and riding info on Wyoming is as accurate as the guy that JUST came off the mtn and is posting conditions within 12 hours of real time of riding. THAT is what makes this forum a awesome place is people posting like yourself mr. flyin bryan. Keep up the pics and posts and I have confidence Snowesters can decipher the posts.

I am in central nd and travel I-94 alot. This year is the least amount of sleds I have ever seen on the road normaly there are trailers full of sleds going and coming not this year. I fell no snow and economy are slowing it down and we are more aware of snow conditions not some resort saying its great. Then driving 12 hours to sled on dirt that does't happen anymore. I am waiting for a good 2 to 3 feet of fresh and I will be there.
