2010/11 Snow conditions Snowy Range

Just got back from the snowies on sunday, we rode from wed to saturday and the snow is very good for this time of year, we had about a foot of fresh on saturday, but each of the other nights got any where from 3 to 8 inches each night, especially on the north side. Anyway we had a great time, I would also like to thank ritfire73 for taking me under their wing for an afternoon of riding, I enjoyed that very much, sorry we didn't call you for saturday, but the other guys had plans for where we were going and it paid off. But thanks again jake and curt for showing me around. i will try to get a hold of you next time we get out their and have some more MN Micholobs for you.

Snowies get another coat.

Holy crap ----------Go to snotel and ck the hourly report for french creek and then look at the NOAA weather for the same area ---------- I cant wait for friday and saturday!:face-icon-small-coo

Those a very nice photos. You picked a great time to go! Did you guys come in from the east or west side? We usually say in Encampment, but thought about saving a couple hours driving on this trip and come in from the east. We are heading out on Tuesday:) Thanks for the info in advance!

Thanks - we parked on the east side at Greenrock right up front. There was ~10 rigs or so before the turnaround and 4-5 rigs parked down by Snowy Mountain Lodge. Everyone was very courteous and gave each other plenty of space :face-icon-small-coo

IMO - Save the fuel and the time and park on the east side if the weather/conditions allow.

Avy Forecast 4.1.XI

Backcountry Avalanche Forecast for Front Range

Issued: 04/01/2011 6:50 AM by Spencer Logan

Highlights
Today begins our quick transition to warm snow. Wet loose avalanches will become more frequent. Mild temperatures are settling the recent storm snow. The snow gains strength as it settles, which can make avalanches harder to trigger but larger when they go. Avalanche conditions are dangerous and will require careful evaluation and route finding.

Avalanche Danger
There are pockets of CONSIDERABLE (Level 3) danger on very steep, windloaded slopes near and above treeline on north, northeast, east, and southeast aspects. The danger is MODERATE (Level 2) on other aspects near and above treeline. Human triggered avalanches are likey in the wind and storm slabs, especially in the areas from Berthoud to Loveland Passes where storm accumulations were greatest. Loose avalanches will be increasing in size on sunny slopes. Below treeline the danger is MODERATE (Level 2) on all slopes. It is possible to trigger storm slabs, and loose avalanches will be common on very steep slopes.

I set off a huge avy on Friday in the Madres. I know this mountain very well. I was riding in an area that I know will slide to the south of the bowl I was climbing in. In fact as I was climbing into this bowl and I was purposely staying low around the corner and giving myself plenty of space from where the typical trigger points are. I would say a good 250-300 yards. I crested the top and right when I got to the top I saw the fracture at my feet cut. I didn't think it was that big until I turned around to make sure no one was following me, then I saw just how big this thing was...
The slab was 4-9 feet thick with house size slabs! The run off was was approx. 1000-1200 feet. Width was approx. 800 ft. It snapped a fee trees.
I do have some pics I will try to get up.

So be careful out there!! Still plenty of Avy danger out there

Thanks for the info dcturbo. I would love to see the pics. Good to hear know one was injured.
I have not heard of very many fatalities this winter so I would hate it if there were ANY this late in the season.

Good snow today with the current storm.
Left out of Green rock about 8am trails were relatively smooth for this time of year.
Lake Marie had 6-8 inches of new snow.
Took N trail around through Quealy hut area, 10+ in there.

Forecast is looking promising for the coming weekend.

Have a few pics I will try and post tonight.

Sounds like a close call DC! A buddy of mine (blue XP rider, guy that tried out your demo PRO) set one off before we found ourselves in the "turbo trees." It was small though.
