Avy Forecast 2.08.XI
Backcountry Avalanche Forecast for Front Range
Issued: 02/08/2011 6:41 AM by John Snook
Special Advisory Statement in Effect through 02/09/2011 9:00 AM
A cold front pushed through the northern zones late Monday night. A period of heavy snow associated with the front dropped 8-12" on the Steamboat zone, and 5-8" across the Front Range, Vail-Summit County, and Aspen zones. Stronger winds during this period transported snow onto north through east to south aspects. Highway crews reported a natural slide running on a south aspect in eastern Summit County. Light snow continues through Tuesday, but much colder temperatures inhibit further accumulations. Recent storm snow and wind are not quite enough to exceed avalanche warning criteria, but areas of HIGH danger continue to exist on lee aspects where natural and human-triggered slides are likely. Backcountry travelers need to exercise caution on Tuesday.
6:45 AM by John Snook: East thru south aspects most suspect. Av danger remains CONSIDERABLE(3) to HIGH(4). Triggered slides likely.
Highlights
Another 6-8" of snow with a period of stronger winds keep the avalanche danger at CONSIDERABLE to HIGH. East through south aspects are most suspect where new snow is sliding easily on the old snow surface. Triggered slides likely in the fresh storm and wind slabs. Much colder temperatures and light snow for Tuesday.
