2010/11 Snow conditions Snowy Range

AVY FORECAST 1.21.XI

Backcountry Avalanche Forecast for Front Range

Issued: 01/21/2011 7:32 AM by Spencer Logan

Highlights
Continued windloading will keep the avalanche danger elevated. Natural avalanche activity will continue in windloaded areas, and human triggered avalanches remain likely and are becoming increasingly high consequence. Potential avalanches are growing deeper, wider, and will run farther. You will need to select your terrain and routes carefully and cautiously today. Avoid traveling on or under steep slopes near and above treeline today.

Avalanche Danger
The avalanche danger for the Front Range Zone is HIGH (Level 4) on north through east to south aspects above treeline. The danger is CONSIDERABLE (Level 3) on all other aspects near and above tree line, and north through east to south aspects below treeline. The danger is MODERATE (Level 2) on southwest, west, and northwest aspects below treeline

AGAIN, DUE TO THE HIGHER WINDS AND SNOWFALL FOR THE SNOWIES THIS WEEK, I WOULD TAKE EVERY RATING UP A NOTCH - EXTREME! HIGH ! CONSIDERABLE !

Arrived lastnight very windy on the way here. Rode the west side today and found awesome untracked snow. Anywhere from 1-3 ft, but the wind was still blowing today.

Pretty gusty on this side, visibility was marginal but once we got around to the back it wasn't bad at all. Snowed all day, I'm guessing about a foot of new.

Amazing snow today visibility sucked but in the honey holes it was over the hood all day long. I would say around three feet or more of fluff if you know were to look. Didn't ride a for long today as it was just me and the wife and the visibility was getting bad so we wanted to stay out of trouble. but gonna hit it again tommorow. It was hard to get any really good pics with the poor visibility and snow my camera lense kept fogging. After this weekend all the lovely out of state riders will understand why we say the bigger the track the better. It took all the 166's had to stay a float in the trees today it was so deep but so fun!!!!!!

pics of the wife she was a trooper today in the bad weather and rode great like always a stump tipped her over in the second picture but you can see how good the snow was and that meadow was one of the shallowest.

picture of my sled parked on the level going down hill you couldn't see your hood. sorry for the bad pics will try to get some better ones tommorow.

Put on 60 miles in the trees today - 2+ feet everywhere we went - all tracks from last weekend were wiped out this week. Rode with Ollie and Wingnut and had a great time.

Thanks for the update on Myra. Oh and I suppose the snow conditions also.
Three more weeks until we are there( it has been a painful wait).

Cant Wait!!!!

I sure am liking them pics. Going to be making my first trip to the snowies in 3 weeks. Never rode there just Cooke and the Big Horns. Just keep letting the snow fall!!!!!

Thanks for the update, I am heading up to wycolo in about an hour and will be up for 3 days!! Lots of snow, and supposed to be sunny for a couple days!! Let you all know how it was when I get back Saturday!

Heading out the last weekend in Feb....... Coming from Michigan and so anxious to find some snow. I hope they get some fresh right before we come out!

Awesome, awesome snow amounts for January!!! North French Creek-Snotel-100 inches 2 days ago. And the best month for snow is right around the corner. Great pics guys, keep um coming!

Rode out of Greenrock yesterday. Plenty of blue sky and unmolested areas, mostly on the back side. Snow is setting up on the Lake Marie side but not too bad. Back side is much better with some good powder in the trees and some sugar on the drifted slopes. Needs another good dumping but then the avy level will go to the top of the chart. Awesome day!:face-icon-small-coo
