im a flatlander and i get to the mts once a year
This very quote is said a thousand times on this site...and regardless of what is said after it...will result in people needlessly being in harms way...
last year we had a huge number of people die in avalanches during this holiday break, and I hope and pray that does not happen again...
However, with more snow this year than last, the chances are more will unfortunately not make it...
Why is the above quote the most dangerous? riding ability will only do one thing...get you to places you shoudl not be...and if you are not experienced at reading snow and terrain, you will put yoruself in a position to get buried by an avalanche and possibly not make it back home whether that is flatland or mountains...
Please seek input from locals who know how to read the conditions!!!
few bits of advice (none solicitied and non asked but hope to prevent one tragedy!!!!
- If you must high mark, ONLY one on the hill at a time (this alone will save 50% of all avy deaths)
- Those watching, PLEASE do NOT sit right below the slope, you too could get buried and lose your life...(we ahd two perish last year who were 1/4 mile away,a nd killed by debris)
- If you can, have a local ride with you, and be careful to stay away from slopes at or approaching 38 degrees (the magical number for slides)
If you dont have knowledge of avy conditions GET it, there are lots of good sites, most hotels post it...and if followed, will reduce deaths dramatically...
Sorry, just HAD to post this, lost two friends last year, and neither of them were flatlanders..Avy's dont ask where your from....they just know where you are!!!
