Whistler-Pemberton official 09-10 thread

Dec 1st, up the Rutherford.

Trail was icy as hell getting up, grooming wont change that. I actually thought it wasn't that bad, minus the occasional overheating. Time to get ice scratchers.

Here's a short vid from the day, first time playing around with a pov cam.

There are a LOT of crevasses up there that opened up over the summer, keep your eyes open, and be safe. Also the sun sets at around 4-4:30 so plan accordingly.

Ray what happened at the meeting? Will they be grooming? How far is Hurly from Rutherford?.......and how soft is it up top?:beer;:beer;:beer;

You failed to mention you went in a crevasse yourself, smashed your face, left your sled in the alpine and got doubled out cause you were too banged to ride. 2 sleds in your group in a crevasse the same day? Take it easy up there... I know visibility wasn't the issue?

Well Klimbing Kitty, its about 30 minute (drive) past Rutherford... you go into Pemberton, left at PetroCan and out the Pemberton Meadows Road (about 20-25KM). You offload at the base of the Hurley FSR (Forest Service Road) ... offload point can vary from week to week based on the level of snow - its basic though, you just drive until you see trucks/trailers/decks and bingo. The "Hurley" itself is abotu 60KM and well maintained by Groomers. Watch the BRV thread for updated on grooming.

Trust me, you'll be hooked on the BRV and the riding areas that are up there. Massive terrain, fraction of the riders (compared to any other West Coast area), killer snow conditions, I'd say more sunshine than the Whistler corridor, great pub (Mineshaft) and accomodations (Mines Motel) in Bralorne, and pretty friendly locals.

Its not called Whistler's backcountry by accident. Our crew checked it out in March 2003, bought a place there in October 2003 and we've been going there on weekends ever since. Its killer!

thanks for pointing that out. alot of people dont realize how many crevasses are open early season at rutherford (even with this nov snowfall). havent been up there yet and thought maybe it was better than it is. why post its all ****s and giggles out than when it is still knarly. you could be sending people that dont know the area into potentially dangerous situations. thanks a team!:)

Like I said in my post...

I showed the photo of Athan in the first crevasse, sorry if I didn't want to show photos of my face all bleeding.

I didn't want to share the fact there was a pretty much brand new 09 sitting up there in plain view with new engine/skis/bars/shocks. But thanks.

They're going to drop the snowcat off once the snow level gets to the highway again. I believe the first tentative date was set for the 13th. Grooming twice a week, Thursdays and Sundays. They set the work day tentatively for the 13th as well to clear logs off the upper trail to the cabin, and chop wood/clean/refinish the floor etc. They'll be clearing the parking lot as needed, if you haven't grabbed a pemberton valley snowmobile club membership yet I'd advise doing so before the 13th, otherwise it'll probably be 15$ per day to ride. They will have a wireless machine this year for credit/debit at the trailhead too though.

If you check the long term forecast, it looks like it'll start snowing by the 12th or so. http://www.theweathernetwork.com/index.php?product=fourteenday&placecode=cabc0322

The hurley FSR is ~30km down meadows road, like said it previous posts. Some great riding to be had up Noel, Hope Creek, Playland etc, also lots of fun for DH biking in the summer. It's 56-60km to Bralorne/Goldbridge, groomed quite often. Usually new years up there is quite the event.

Don't hit soft till above toe of the Appa. Even then very little pockets the wind didn't get too. By all means not pow. With all the wind, the crevasses as I'm sure you have read are barely swept invisible, but lurking. By far the most open I have seen it in years despite our good early season snow.

Good to know people still laugh at others misfortunes/injuries..

Easy now.

The humor was you getting called out for wrecking since you didnt mention it in your post earlier.

All you made mention was
"Athan flying into cravasse #1
"I like what I see!"

I am certainly not laughing at you since I have shattered my ankle in 8 pieces and broker my arm & shoulder ridding.

Lets just pray for more snow

:D
:D

Thanks for your report Nads. I appreciate it, and your probably only one of a few getting out these days?! Looks like your nose is back in action. Any cat skiers up there? HAHA.

Haha, thanks! Yeah it healed up quite fast actually. Didn't see anyone else up there, no sledders, snocats or skiers. I think we were the first to punch up top, but once you go up the chute there's a 20ft windlip and you can't get over the backside yet... dunno how that's going to work this year.
