Wedge/Tube Tunnel backcountry sled lots of pics

You better hurry up. Snow is coming. Any updated pictures?

I know I know. Trust me I usually have the sled ready by the end of august but school has been killing me. I am in my senior year of engineering technology and its crazy busy. I will be home monday night for thanksgiving weekend and will be working all week on it with many pictures to come!

I got two years left here at WNEC. I got accepted at UMaine too, but got more scholarship here. I usually ride out of Rangeley an head northwest up into the oxbow.

You, young man - are an inspiration!

I've got to salute you for your 'get it done' attitude. Don't forget to make it up to Mom with some extra time spent with her - maybe she'll know how much your time sledding outdoors means to you on your new sled, and that if you gave her a little extra, it would count big time.....

That is an amazing project, and you have a bright future.

Nice job!

I am certainly no professional on this. I am just a 21 year old going to school for mechanical engineering. Its just my opinion on it from my experiences and talking to a guy I know that builds nasty asphalt sleds with chro-moly and sometimes ti chassis's.

Thanks everyone for all the comments on this thing. As I said i am only 21 years old, I am trying to get an early start on some intense sled projects lol. This very much has been an experiment for me and there are plenty of things I will do different the next time around. Also I have a limited budget being in college. In hindsight I could have just bought a VE tunnel to replace my mangled one and have been done with it, but i think i will really have something special and very unique. I will take great pride in being able to say yeah, I built this sled, the tunnel, trailing arms, radius rods, steering post and built the engine.
Sorry this was long. Thanks again all. There will be plenty more to come as soon as I get home from school again.

My motivation came from spending alot of time in this guys shop. Builds amazing stuff http://pcsperformance.com/

great build, it looks amazing!!! it's insane how much weight you saved on the sled, nearly 100 pounds!!!

finally got a bunch done

Wow....

That is lookin' sharp....I have always wanted to build one of those. Now the task seems daunting. Maybe I should start with some trailing arms......Good work.

Thanks guys wish I had gotten a pic that day after I finished the other running board.
To many hours....I dunno, I would think that I have well over 300 hrs in it with all the tube notching being done with a die grinder and it being my first atempt at this. I have been very meticulous with it. Believe it or not there is about 70ft of half in chromoly in it and i have no scrap pieces over probably 3 inchs. I have been very careful to make everything fit right the first time. Its going to come in a little heavier then i was hopping but will still be a big weight savings and much stronger then stock.

Just took my last final of the semester, Design class, pretty sure i rocked it. Anyways will be home tomorrow for 3 weeks for break so pics and photos will be added a bunch as I hope to get it rideable over break...

Man, we need some updates.

i know i know Being 2 hours away from my shop away at college is soooo hard will be home tomorrow for three weeks will be doing nothing but working on sleds the whole time need to put a 151 under my dads 02 rmk and help my buddy finish putting an 02 800 in his stretched 99 sno pro 440 oh and put a new track under my uncles xlt will be a buzy 3 weeks to say the least

been painting a few things everything is all welded up. The tunnel skin is pretty much all cut out other then what needs to be cut out of the top for the u cooler. Ran out of the metallic primer for the tunnel so i couldn't get the red on that unfortunately. Trailing arms and radius rods I am just doing with silver rustoleum Silver hammered metal finish. No powder coat this year, don't have the money, am a poor college kid. Can't wait to start bolting everything together for good on Sunday hopefully.
I got some UHMW plastic, basically the same thing the white plastic cutting boards are made out of to rivet under the running boards to keep sticks out. Really wanted to leave them open for clean out but was way to worried about hooking a stick on them as most of the riding we do is in cuttings here in Maine.

More to come soon!

Way cool!! Just awesome dude! :):)

You keep calling yourself a poor college-kid, but man you're getting something done!!

Cant wait to see what you'll be making when you get a real job and can afford to put some more $$$ into the stuff to compliment your ideas and fab-skills.

Major thumbs up!:beer;:beer;:beer;

Rune,

Very nice job..best part of being out in the shop...keeps you out of trouble most kids get into...I started out modding bmx bikes when I was a kid...moved on to full tube chassis cars and trucks(both street and race)..keep up the good work..and keep your buddies in the shop with you..one day they will thank you..heres a pic of my last race truck(mud racer..making 2100 hp on a 3400 pd truck)I did all the work except for the machine work on the block(and I can do that stuff too)..

nice sled i wish i would have saw this build alot sooner could have helped some i freind and i built a tube chassis sled in 2001 was sweet could side hil and turn like no other sled i have riden i think it was do to the ridgie ity of the chrome moly we built it with .065 3/4 and could have used .043 . lexan is tough and cool looking but you have problems with cooling we had a full length cooler with a 156 track and it would heat on hard pack and it melted the lexan so i would use aliminum we used aliminum the second time and cooled great . i have some heat exchangers out of a mach z if you want to modify them to use them i would give them to you for shipping
gotta go wife wants me for christmas stuff i will try to check back in soon
thanks and great job dan

that truck is sick! thanks! yeah I have a couple good friends that i wrench with. Would have to say i easily spend the most time at the shop but i get them there as much as possible.

its really getting there now!! skid is in for good with new anti stab kit and scratchers i got for xmas. Belly pan is most of the way on just need to fill some holes with some aluminum underneath. Got all my fuel lines run for the new pump location. Things left to do:
finish wiring a few things it runs the way it is now
finish welding cooler and install.
bolt seat down
put material under the running boards (all cut out already)
ether build or buy some spindles.
