** Turny Updates **

Sick!

:D:Rode Turney today with race and the dad. Had to do a nice climb to get up to the first bench. good ieda race. The first bowl off to the right is sick sick.

Downhill carves at 30mph 4 ft of fresh!! Couldent see anything! Bluebird day. I just wish someone had there battery and we coulda got some good pictures.:beer;

O well all we would have got was a wave of snow.

Talked to Avy Reaserch guy today. He saw my pack and was like. Hey its you. Im lucky he didnt give me a lecture.:p

Ride safe everyone. Now olny if we had 3 more feet.

Rode the backside and to the right of Turny & it was good. Lots of loose powder, barely any tracks when we got there but Bottomfeeder took care of that. There was new snow on the front side but hard pack underneath. Avalanche information center was out there doing rescue training all day with helo's & planes, Kinda reassuring that they were around.

Edit: I meant the right side as opposed to the left side on the top of Turny. Changed it.

AVALANCHE AND SNOWPACK DISCUSSION
No human or natural avalanche activity reported yesterday. Thursday, a snowmachine triggered avalanche was reported from the Seattle Drainage area. An ABS airbag was deployed and the rider was only partially buried. Still waiting to hear and learn from that rider. He described a crusty bed surface. Lisa went in search of this crust and found it at 2500 feet. It seems to be the upper reaches of that warm spell that occurred last week. The new snow old snow interface continues to be the most current concern, but is bonding better each day. All Lisa's stability tests had hard results.

yes. it was me. I talked to him where everyone was trying to get up the notch.

bottomfeeder, Im not trying to be a jerk, so dont take this the wrong way...:)

Since involved in an avalanche last week, what have you done to increase your awareness of possible avalanche conditions? What conditions changed from Thursday to Saturday which would stabilize the snowpack? What made riding the hills safer? Which slopes are more prone to slide?

I would love to ride south next week, but i want to make sure the hills are safe before I roll that way.

Remember, if you wouldnt climb it without your beacon or abs pack, you definately shouldnt do it with them.

I was up there yesterday along with all the ave safty crews and they told us we were fine just be careful. Hope that helps. :)

Rode turny thursday, fri, sat... Unreal weekend. Had one nasty landing, bruised a rib on the right side... i can't cough/sneeze, or even get out of bed without being tortured...

Helping countless people get unstuck all weekend probably didn't help.

Jen it was fun partying in Gwood - hope you had fun too!

Well You put that in a good way joe. Ive Looked Online at avys and make snowpits now on hills i am gona mark on. I know you didnt mean it wrong. But Im not stupid. Thanks:) Robert.

travis im gonna have to say that i dont feel for you man .... your ribs wouldnt hurt if ya had a chest protector on haha ... im just jokin that shizzle hurt espically when you have to ride out with ur chest hurting

Bottomfeeder mentioned snow pits. So briefly, a snow pit is a cut-away (pit )of the snow used to take a look at the layers that make up the snow pack, you're looking for a weak layer, like a layer from a cold snap, with a thick layer of warm weather snow on top of it, for example, but if you're not into stopping and taking the time to dig one do this. Side hill to expose the pack then ride slowly over the up hill side, if there is a weak layer it should break off. This is just a snow machiners version of of a test pit, it'll help you understand the conditions, but won't tell the whole story, of course. Do it often too, as snow packs differ with terrain.

Up at hatchers a few years ago, we dug 4 pits into the side of the hill up by independence...

All were within 1/2 mile of each-other on the same type of slopes. Each snow pack had different characteristics. I couldnt believe how much the snow changed from pit to pit.

I cant say I always dig a pit, in fact I rarely do. I usually look and pay attention to the signs. Things like extremely cold weather then a fresh dump, as well as other major changes in the weather. I know it takes a while of moderate temperatures to help the layers of snow adhere together, and one or two days aint gonna cut it for me.

I think the biggest thing is paying attention to the signs and knowing the recent weather history. If you have time, dig a pit. Most importantly, get educated.

Joe

Road turny both days this weekend for the first time. Had a blast. Sunrise to sunset. Incredible views. Great snow.
