Guys, if you do go to turny this weekend, please realize that the avy dangers in going to be off the hook. This is anywhere around south central right now, not just turny. Use your heads, somebody is wanting you to come back home alive!
AVALANCHE AND SNOWPACK DISCUSSION
Avalanche conditions will remain very dangerous today. Traveling in avalanche terrain is not recommended. This includes lower angle slopes and flat terrain under avalanche paths.
I considered dropping the avalanche danger to considerable today but had my hesitations. Either way you slice it we are in it. With increasing winds and temperatures and strong precip on it's way the avalanche danger will remain high today. Human and natural avalanches are likely today.
We are in the middle of the largest avalanche and storm cycle of the year. AK DOT, AKRR, and Alyeska have all been getting results from control work. Although some of the historic avalanche paths have not gone as large as I expected, another round of storms tonight will test them. Large 2-4 foot wind slabs are present near alpine ridges. Winds over 100 mph have striped some aspects of all snow and deposited it on leeward aspects. Matt and Ben reported 20 inches of storm snow at 1800 ft in Turnagain Pass yesterday. The snow line fluctuated around 2000 ft. Rain reached up to this level and cursed us with a rain crust mid storm snow up to ~2000 ft.
We will be watching this evenings weather very closely, to see what mother nature deals us.
