The South Half

Well the timing here in Idaho was a bust. Had a good ride on Friday, Saturday turned to sleet, wet and frozen. Sunday was all rain, and now it starts snowing hard on top of all the frozen melt off from Sunday, and gotta head to airport in a couple hours.

I'm still off work the rest of the week... would like to get to Sherman. Anybody around for a Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday ride? Leave a message on cell, I'll be in and out of airports today, and get into Ontario at 10:30pm.

Can you roll tomorrow or are you working? I may give u a call later.
I have to stick around and do family stuff 1/1.

Wednesday's no good, New Years Eve and all... My GF and I are going to Sherman on Thursday. This will be her first time with her own sled, probably take her down to Mosquito meadow, yurt, and some road riding. She has to work on friday, so I'll be back out there Friday morning.... You up for a friday ride??

Sherman report from yesterday:

warm and sunny, softened up the snow and not many tracks. Unload at Cherry Blossom Rd, nice spot, can handle lots of vehicles and you can turn around. Some asphalt showing for the fist mile, then good coverage. Had about 2 ft at the snow pole. Off trail is still a little iffy, but can be done if you're careful. Rode all the hills around the vista, snow is setting up, very spring-like.
Christina rode the Renegade and did great. We took the first right down to mosquito meadow, and were the first tracks in. The meadows were good, even some powder in the shady areas. Stopped at the Yurt and played in Paloma meadow and then headed to Bald Mtn. Lookout. Well we tried at least, no tracks up to Bald yet and that made it fun. Some big wind-drifts across the route and not much coverage on the manzanita thickets, so you just sank if you hit one of those. Chris sank in one, so we had to roll the Gade a few times to get it out, and then a ride sidehill and down to try to get back to the "trail". *note to self- take windsheild off next time before rolling sled out of hole* yes, they tend to crack when you do this...... DOH:face-
icon-small-sho Another big drift up aways kept us from getting to the lookout.... maybe next time.
No other sleds all day or any sign of a groomer... which is ok, makes the trail that much fun, and with not alot of traffic yet there's no ugly moguls yet.

Ok guys, next weekend (Jan 10-11) plan on Sherman... We're going up on Sat morn with camper, stay the night and ride some on Sunday too. I'll have the fire pit, maybe a BBQ and the beers will be cold. Clear your calenders now!! All invited..

Hade a great weekend at Sherman. Conditions were alot better than I expected, even with the warming were having, the freeze at night has kept the melt to a minimum. Still 2 ft at the snow pole and 2-3 feet down into the meadows. Still found alot of light, frozen powder, not the cement I figured would of formed.
Rode with 3 others on Sat. up into Osa Meadow and then down to Troy Meadow. You can still get off trail ok, just pay attention and pick your lines. Spent the night at stage area, campfire and BBQ! Sunday, Chris and I explored Mosquito and Round Meadows.. boondocked in and out of the trees and found some other meadows I never knew of, and had no tracks yet. Got onto a couple fun hills, but we need a few more feet to get farther back in.
Yes Don, the groomer is there, but it's broken down in the middle of the road. He plowed some from Cherry Hill road, we unloaded at 7000'. Some asphalt is showing, and a couple more warm days should melt the low elevations to were you can drive to the outhouse parking lot.
All in all it was worth going up.. warm temps dont last long at 9000', should still be good into next weekend+.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA WEATHER AUTHORITY
JANUARY 19, 2009 11:40am Pacific Time

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA ...

THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA WEATHER AUTHORITY HAS ISSUED A SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT EFFECTIVE NOW ...

THE STORM WINDOW IS OPENING AGAIN ACCORDING TO UJEAS ES1, INITIALIZED ON JANUARY 1, 2009. THE STORM WINDOW WILL OPEN THE DOOR FOR STORMS THROUGH THE PIPELINE INTO THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA REGION.

THE FIRST STORM IS A CUTOFF LOW, SET TO ARRIVE ON WEDNESDAY. A SLUG OF TROPICAL MOISTURE SEEN ON SATELLITE IMAGES WILL ENTRAIN INTO THE LOW LEVEL FLOW FOR A GOOD CHANCE OF RAIN. RIGHT NOW I AM LOOKING AT A SIMILAR CHRISTMAS EVE TYPE SYSTEM. THE MAIN STORM DYNAMICS MAY ACTUALLY STAY SOUTH OF THE AREA, IMPACTING BAJA MORE-SO THAN OUR AREA.
HOWEVER, THE TIGHT LOW LEVEL CIRCULATION MAY BRING A SOUTHEAST FLOW FOR LESS MOISTURE ACROSS THE INLAND EMPIRE AND HIGH DESERT ZONES DUE TO DOWN-SLOPING. THIS IS SIMILAR TO THE CHRISTMAS EVE STORMS.
BEST CHANCES ARE WEST OF LOS ANGELES FOR NOW.

SNOW LEVEL LOOKS ABOVE 8,000 FEET IN ALL SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA ZONES DUE TO THE WARM AIR ADVECTION. AGAIN, SIMILAR TO THE CHRISTMAS EVE DYNAMICS.

STILL, THERE IS A CHANCE OF RAIN FOR WEDNESDAY THROUGH THE WEEKEND WHERE INDICATIONS OF A SECOND STORM SYSTEM AT THE END OF THE PERIOD.

UJEAS SHOWS A NORTH TO SOUTH FLOW FOR THE END OF THE MONTH. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT COLDER STORMS WILL IMPACT OUR FORECAST ZONES THEN. IT IS LONG RANGE IN WHICH THINGS CAN CHANGE, HOWEVER UJEAS' ACCURACY SO FAR THIS MONTH IS 100% IN THIS FORECAST AREA. SO AM CONFIDENT IN THE END MONTH NORTH TO SOUTH FLOW AT THIS TIME.

Looks like we are finally gonna get more storms. (raining hard here in Ventura County)

Much colder and wetter next week with snow levels to 6000 feet.

Just pray it makes it to the Sierras.

Looks like Sherman Peak has snow at 9000 plus feet BUT Alta Sierra Ski resort was rained out at 6000 ish feet.

Tied up this weekend... The following weekend Feb 7-8 is open and planning to get out somewhere.. Not sure what the snow will be like with this crummy weather, may have to head up north...... maybe Mammoth????

Last minute notice-

Off work tomorrow so I'm gonna head to Sherman. Going to leave right now, got the camper so I'll be at the staging area. Anyone have the day off come on up. Wanna take a look at conditions and see if it's good enough for next weekend.

How was it? did you only get to play on the pass area? looks melted out up there on the cams.

It was the best ride up there this year. The powder was still soft, but seemed to get thin past the Yurt. So I played around the vista and the areas North of the yurt. 103,102, 105 areas didnt have any tracks, so it was a blast. Off trail is good, still have to keep an eye out, but do-able. The fire areas have too many big trees down and stumps, but the green forest is wide open....... well as open as 2-3 feet will get you, need 6-8 feet to be where we want it. The hills at the vista are fine. The bowl area that Don and I found last year was pretty thin though.
The snow held up great this week, I think it will stay till next weekend, it's still freezing at night.
So, next weekend, everyone plan on a Sherman run. I'll be staying the night and riding Sunday too. Bring sleeping quarters and we'll make it a shindig. Don was mentioning on going and another guy he knows wants to go. Maybe James6000 is available, and you Tommy...... we'll have a good little run.
