I live in Michigan and have a Doo backcountry here but I also have a XM 154 I keep in steamboat, which I fly out and ride every other weekend and sometimes more than that. When I ride Michigan I ride off trail in day UP. its fun, but not like out west. if you knkw where to go in the UPPER you can keep a smile on your face for a few days. if I can't make it out west i still head north. better than sitting at home.

I have been out west for at least a week every year for the last 15 years and love it there last year I was invited to the u.p by Houghton as my nephew is one of the riders from natural frequency first time I had ever been to the u.p in the winter alls I can say is I had a blast so much so I went back the next weekend. I live in Minnesota its 8 hours to the u.p and 16 hours to West Yellowstone if I'm going for a week I go west if I'm going to go for the weekend I would HIGHLY consider the u.p

This sums it up perfectly. Weeklong trip Go West. Less than that Go North.

Just noticed this thread was still floating around and wanted to say thanks for all the responses. We did end up going back to the mesa that weekend. Riding was awesome as usual. That said it was 15 hours each way but having a motorhome and 5 buddies to split driving helps. With all the good responses I might try to make the UP in the near future.

You do know there are other places in the mountains with great riding that is a lot closer than the mesa!

Haha! Yeah I know. I posted that question 3 weeks ago and at that point most of the places that we like (rabbit ears, snowys, big horns) were pretty dry yet. A lot has changed in that last couple weeks. We are headed to the Black Hills this weekend for a wives trip. That's only 6 hours for us. I need to move.....

I lived in MI for 26 years before moving to UT. I still go back once a year to ride the UP.

The answer is that they are very different. And both very fun in their own right.

WEST:
Untouched powder, hill climbs, open fields, DEEP snow, technical riding skills required. Ride during the day and go home / back to hotel at night. Bring food and gear and by avy savvy.

UP:
Groomed trails (and lots of em), ride from town to town (bar to bar), lakes, fields, lots of trees, small fields with hills, decent snow -- though nothing I'd fear with even a 121" track. Ride all day, ride all night if you want to. Go to some cool little towns, etc.

In short, I like both. If I had to pick -- I'd go mountain riding all the way. But don't think the UP is boring. Go to Big Bay, MI, or find a map and look at Baraga Plains, or the L'anse/Skanee area. Plenty of open land and off-the-trail riding.

had an M7 153. gave it a work out sometimes. There can be a lot of open land to ride east of houghton to big bay. the snow varys year to year but usually by mid jan you can play in the woods safely. This year had been great for the houghton area. as far as going east there is less snow but still fun.

I visited Houghton before Christmas and had a blast. Went to collage there 20 plus years ago. Sledding has changed and I would say for the better. Trees have grown and sleds are better.
There is more snow there this season than here in Utah right now. Yes the mountains out west are cool but each place has its +'s.
No avalanches, sled hp threw the moon, normal 93 gas, good snow, west good snow, lots of areas, long season, ........JMO
Mountain sleds are very popular in the UP. I was able to rent a 144 RMK but dealers were stocking and selling 155 and 154's.

I have to echo a couple previous posts. If you have a week and can spend 30 hours in a truck go west. For a long weekend the UP can quench the thirst for powder. The off trail in the keewenaw peninsula is killer if you are willing to work for it. I've been out west each year for the last 7. This will be the first year I can't make it for time. I'm going to the UP instead. I can ensure you my pro 155 will be stuck in 5 foot deep snow. It's not out west, but we aren't all that lucky to live out there or can afford to ride out there all the time.
