Tampico/Ahtanum snow report 2011/2012 part:three

Quick Update:

Raining moderate to hard here all day near the sno-park level. Have lost some snow, probably at least 3" (that doesn't leave much left to groom at the lower levels, the real problem for this time of year, IMHO). Currently about 39F.

Green Lake sno-tel site seems to be down.

Sorry for the lack of updates; I was at the WSSA convention riding the 'blues. 142 miles in 2 days of mostly boondocking. Of course, per history, when I am gone, the snow here will be deep and beautiful with lots of great riding. Now that I am back, the weather has gone back to the dogs (as in raining cats and ...).

I did get to finally ride a pro (actually Lane Lindstrom's from sno-west)-great machine. I also got a brochure on the '13s that are now listing at 417 lbs for a 155" track 800. Should be a great sled!

WSSA was great for the Yakima Ski-Benders also-find out at our next meeting on March 6th.

Forecast for sno-park level is for more rain (up to 1") and warm over the next 2 days, with snow likely for Friday through Saturday. 2 week forecast is for below normal temps and above normal precip, good, except for the fact it is nearly March. The snows this time of year will not last long at the lower elevation, especially if the groomable base down low is gone. At least we have a decent chance though the next few weeks. Start dancin' snodawg!

Parking Permit

Question: What permit is required for the Main lot?

From Eddy:

Discover Pass and registered snowmobiles.

Quick evening update, 02/22/12 2100 hrs

Green Lake 22.8F; 75" snow depth (approximately 10" new), had a high of 40.3F in the last 24 hours.
Sno-Park (nearby) 29F 4-10" snow, had a light dusting this afternoon. Lost a bunch down low the last 36 hours, but it is now freezing up. Forecast looks decent for the weekend and next 2 weeks, as posted earlier.

On a more somber note, a former snowmobiler, John Clifton was lost in a farming accident last week on the farm he worked near Harrah, WA. His funeral was yesterday. I believe he rode and did a lot of recreational activities in the Ahtanum. Although I passed him on the road a zillion times (he always waved) over the last 2 decades or so, unfortunately I never really got to know him until the last couple of years. He was one of the easiest and most genuine person to talk to that I have ever met, an extremely hard worker and just a genuinely great individual who loved the outdoors. Big loss for the Harrah community and the outdoor lifestyle. My apologies for not posting this earlier in case any one here knew him.

Sled,
Snopark permit is for Forest Service land. Discover pass is for BLM, DNR and State land.
Here in WA we like to make things as confusing and difficult as possible. It's just one of those little quirks you have to learn to love about living here . . . .:face-icon-small-dis
But we do have some awesome riding!

grooming

Went up sunday 2/26 good powder past tree phones. no groomed trails. was rougher than hell coming back. whats up with the grooming? need more snow down low. parking lots were bare.

Discover Pass

This Discover Pass is required for the DNR's "Winter Recreation Areas" located at Ahtanum (Tampico), Rattlesnake and Lily Lake (Chelan Co.). It was also required Manastash until the flood wiped out theis Winter Recreation Site. There is a temporary parking area there now for this winter before the end of the pavement on the Manastash Rd but is on the County ROW and the Discover Pass is not required there this season. Current registration on all sleds is obviously required too. Bald Mountain Sno Park is located on DNR land temporarily due to flood damage in other areas but is managed by Parks and just requires a sno park permit.....no Discover Pass required there. BLM lands are federal and don't have anything to do with the Discover Pass. This info is specific to DNR Winter Recreation Areas and I believe the Discover Pass is required at some of the State Parks sno parks but not sure about them.

Clear as mud?

Should be a great Friday:face-icon-small-coo and good weekend for those who don't have to work this weekend:face-icon-small-sad.

The sno-park got about 6" new over the last couple of days; Green Lake is showing 8" new in the last two days; afternoon temps were only in the mid 20's today at Green Lake.

The trees on the Middle Fork should have been removed last Monday night. Let me know if there are any more down.

Hope to hit the 2 square feet of fresh snow left on Sunday if possible if I am not working.

Forecast looks ok for more mtn snow next week.

boy was i wrong about fresh on top, is was all old. lol
i couldnt believe how many hills we found that still didnt have tracks on them and hills that the tracks went half way up and left the top half for me to play on. yet the convention center and super bowl were tore up and then some! it was 50deg at the snowpark when we loaded up at 5pm. there is quite a few bare spots on middle fork from the 3mi mark down. the snowberm on middle fork is less than 2ft tall now. but where rode was in the trees and above 5,000ft the snow was good believe it or not. it was still deep enough to get stuck.

Saturday:beer;

Beautiful day with mostly crappy snow. 50 miler in sunshine is hard to beat even with heavy snow.
