Tampico / Ahtanum Snow Report 2011-2012:Part 2

New to this area, tired of driving to eastern Or and salmon la sac every wknd. Where is the snow park out of yakima located? Been trying to look it up online but it's not really clear. Thanks in advance.

Yakima area

I like to access the snow park maps on the thread at the top of the forum list. Go to Yakima/Greenwater. I chose Ahtanum meadows. It shows a map of the trails groomed and the two sno parks in the area. I like to open Google maps in another tab and scale it the same as the sno park map. You can then open it in Satellite view to see tree cover etc... or open in terrain view to see true contour lines and elevation. Some guys on here have indicated they are unloading near White's ridge, due to snow cover I presume. On the map it appears to be farther down the road past the sno parks.

If you're in Richland, you should make a trip to Dayton, WA (1Hr drive) sometime and ride near Bluewood or to Tollgate Oregon (little farther) once we get more snow.

Good luck

Quick ride update.: Friday, 01/06/12 North Fork Ahtanum

Rode north fork today, road is icy as heck all the way past Snow Cabin. Tracks from last week are still evident all the way to the top; probably only 3-5" new on top, most has blown off. Superbowl is smoother than last week, but still fast (in and out). Blue Lake seemed a little deeper.

I will update M. Fork if I hear a report.

Probably one of the worst ice scenarios I have ever drove or ridden on.

Once again, the N fork road is very icy from the pavement up. Be careful this weekend.

Tampico

Not being familiar with the area, from looking at the map i'd just take union gap exit and drive out ahtanum and lower ahtanum rd? Looking to roll up that way tomorrow and test out some sleds. Thanks!

Correct. Follow ahtanum, about 17 miles u will come to a Y @ the tampico store, go right about 10 miles the pavement ends. U usaully see gravel but right now I believe its ice for 4miles till u hit snow. The winter recreation parking lot is about a quater mile from where the pavement ends, but I don't think u want to unload there unless ur towing a trailer. Watch out for deer from the tampico store Y up to the gravel rd.

The conditions are way less than par for this time of year, we just got back from our ride today and it is pretty much hard everywhere. You can find some softer snow in the trees on the north slopes. We took a 27 foot enclosed all the way to treephones today, if you are towing a trailer I suggest a pair of tire chains after whites ridge it is very icy. We need snow badly.:face-icon-small-sad

I forgot to mention in my post last night I found a black shovel in the hidden bowl yesterday. I contemplated bringing it back but instead left it in a tree at the bottom of the hill. So if you lost a shovel it is in a tree just east of where everyone sits at the bottom.

While we are on the topic of lost and found, last weekend I found what appears to be part of a helmet communication system. I think it is the piece that mounts on the outside of the helmet, but the electrical pins are screwed up on the backside, so I don't know if it works or not. Found it at the top of the superbowl. Forgot all about it (it was in my tunnel bag) until these couple of posts about L&F.

Pinegrass /Section 3

Has anyone been up recently? We were up over New Years, it's weird, past 4900 feet we hit good snow heading up to Sec. 3, the next day we headed toward 1000, unbelievable how bad it was!!

Thinking about heading up this weekend.....any good news??

Hey Fordguy, how'd our flag job work out for you up Pinegrass? :-)

Was it just the shovel handle? with a flimsy saw on the inside? I did lose one. Can you explain where you found it please? Not sure where the hidden bowl is exactly

The shovel was the shovel head only no handle. the bowl is on the north side of the of the super bowl. If you are in the super bowl looking at the south facing slope there is a bowl over the top of the ridge on the other side.

Shame on you.....It's called the hidden bowl for a reason.

Need to change a tire, one heck of a way to get the tires off the ground:face-icon-small-ton

Wow, That's crazy.... that's always a slick little spot right there too, I pulled a jeep out of the ditch right there 2 years ago... Speed usually helps but that looks pretty bad. Did the enclosed have studs on to try to help get it stopped? Any damage?
