Switchback morph

Dan, I just ran out quick and laid a caliper against my stock 144 rails & my 153 Iceage rails, if using these as a template, relocating holes on your rails will not work and here's why. On upper bracket the holes are approx. 2.6" apart, it does look like the rear part of suspension is moved back equally(but I wouldn't bet my paycheck on it, as I was just holding caliper close to holes), but where the torsion spring would have to go, PT B, you'll run out of rail to place hole, at PT C, it looks like it's been slotted where the lower shock mount would go, lastly, the rubber bump stops need to go back also, so you would have to mill out some rail. Lower RTA would be no problem but it doesn't matter at this point. So basically if budget & time is an issue, just run with what you got! There's really nothing wrong with your suspension other than the bit of trenching, leave her for a summer project?!

OK, thanks for looking further into it for me, I'm actually quite happy with how the skid worked this past weekend anyways.

Ok a little has happened recently, figured I would update my thread.
I went looking for a rough idle problem that had been haunting me recently... I quickly spotted a crack in my engine cross member.
At this point I was committed to pulling the engine, started by pulling the clutch.... instead of popping off the crank, she split and left the inner sheave on the crank.:face-icon-small-dis
After getting the engine out, I found a fair amount of coolant in the mag side dome.

So here's where I am.
A new clutch should be at my not so local Poo dealer tomorrow morning ready for me to go pick up, along with the head o-rings.
I ordered a solid billet engine mount cross member from Franz... expecting it to be delivered early this week.
Once all this is in place I can assemble everything and get it back on the snow! I am looking forward to meeting up with some SW boys for a ride in Revelstoke in just a few weeks. Can't wait.

I have been thinking about trying my other track in my #409 helix, but would like some input from some of you that know more about helix angles than me.
My current track is: 64-40 .46
The second track: 64-44 .46
What effects of going to the 44 second angle should I notice?

Thanks Zane, any rpm change to be expected?

By the way, this was the helix Carls recommended for me. and Mr Kasel told me to run in the 64/40 track when I bought it

it will make it backshift quicker under load and should keep your engine in the peak power range a little better.

A big thanks to Jeff for the quality billet x-member! Very nice, I am glad there are guys like you around making this stuff for us.

My Engine and clutch are assembled and ready now, just gotta go bolt it all in.
Should have it done tonight if nothing goes wrong. The plan is to get out for a 2 or 3 hour test run tomorrow.

Wow, you are getting fast at this!:beer;:clock:

I'm all done except for circ'ing the coolant and oil, and install the hood. Time for relaxing... been a long day.

It's ready for a test ride, but I spent the day putting an M8 back together instead... man I just can not appreciate the design of the M series front suspension.

She is running great again, I love this engine when it's running correctly. But there is always a bad side to the story.... sometime last night some damn crows got at some of my intake vents. That's a first lol, I'll have to patch them up for the rest of the year.

I "rebuilt" my SLP dash intake vents with material from spare Mtn Fit vents I had in a box, should be great for the rest of the year. I will eventually get rid of the aluminum framed vents though.
Got out for a good ride today and the Switch9 is running fantastic! I have a few small things to give some attention to before the Revy trip, nothing major.

I was bored and digging through parts boxes today, and came across my original Switchback helix. I was surprised to find that it is closer to the numbers most mountain 900 guys go for than the original RMK helix.
It's a 64 42 46

Ive been thinking alot about next year lately as it seems this season is getting short now. I want to step it up a bit for next season, more power, more track. I ride with a bunch of 163's and 2 guys with 174's, I hold my own with them but I want more.

So far it seems like going 166 would be the most economical way for extending my track. I'm sure I saw the 166x2.4 going for $549 on tracks usa although I can't find them listed anymore... might be worth a phone call. Otherwise it looks like a 163 and 2.86 drivers.

As for the power..... not sure yet. At the very least it's time for a pipe and higher compression. I would love to piece together a turbo, but $6500usd is far fetched for me. If I could gather most of the parts myself and use Attitude for the tough stuff and save... this MIGHT be an option. It also sounds like Carls might do a 975 in the off season but I haven't contacted them to ask yet.

That is definitely a better helix than the RMK's come with. That would probably still work pretty good. 46 for a second number would be better though.

If you go with a 162 or 163 with 2.86 or 3.0 drivers you will have a much better selection of tracks to choose from. You can pick up used 3.0 pitch track for cheep.

Right on, seems weird that the Switch got the better helix... I guess Polaris let these motors go before they got them dialed tho. What a shame.

Well, probably by mid-may I will be into my dirt biking season and be able to start squirreling money aside for the sled. It's crazy... I an run my CR250 for 4 years on what it takes to mountain sled for 1 SEASON! And I put alot more km's on my bike for sure... probably 2500km + last year.
So when the bank account stabilizes in may, I'll start hunting for goodies. Here's hoping they start selling 180+" tracks soon and all the 174's go up for sale!

theres a complete timbersled rear suspension with 163 ice age rails in the swap meet for 1500.
