Switchback morph

Wish I could gather that kind of cash right now, but it's just not possible through the winter unless I park my sled... which defeats the purpose lol. Summer money goes towards mods / winter money keeps me traveling to BC to ride! Have to wait and hope for a deal through the warm months... that Timbersled setup would be nice though!

I am going to be flat broke after I head up to Colorado, Wyoming and Montana to ride next month.:face-icon-small-fro

Here's the results of my latest engine faulure.
The PTO side piston and cylinder are horribly damaged, no pieces missing from the piston. Looks like the first thing to go was the PTO big end rod bearing... lots of play there. Chunks of the needles must have found their way up into the cylinder. The cyl head is also marked up. The case halves and everything else looks good, lucky.

I have a complete good crank, and head, so it looks like I need 1 cylinder, and 1 piston. I do have a couple cylinders that would need re-plating, or I can go new. Time to decide if I will fix it right away to get a few more rides this year, or leave it for summer.:heh:

Well, I inspected my spare cylinders, and I only have 1 that would be repairable with a re-plate. The others all would need sleeves, or major repairs.
A new cyl from Poo is well over $500usd.
Replated cyl's seem to go for about $250 + core.
Used cyl's on fleabay are going for $150-$200 and there's not many 06 ones up.

For now I'll get the bottom end built, and hope to find a deal on a cyl that I can get quickly. If anyone knows of one, I am all ears!

no not yet, but if I am going to put it together right away to salvage the end of this season, a re-plate is out of my budget, I'll be looking for a used cyl.

Dang Dan, that sucks. At least that explains why she locked up on you on the trail. I wonder why that lower bearing would have failed:face-icon-small-sho:confused:

You said you were running pre-mix for extra protection weren't you?

Yes I do Seth. My oil pump is injecting at about 40/1 and I mix 100/1 in every tank. The rod on the other side checks out good.
Maybe I have the order wrong... could have been a piston failure that dropped something into the rod bearing... can't be sure.

Hard to say, sure looks like the piston took damage after the fact, but no way to know.

40:1 is definitely on the edge (for injection), but with the pre mix you should have been pretty safe.

I think I am running about 32:1 in mine on average.

I can certainly bump up the injection rate, and probably will after this.
I sent an email to an ebay seller about a used cylinder. It's snowing like crazy out there!

damn buddy, thats a tough break...

i just recently met a local here with an 05 900 as well...was pretty cool to run into him and shoot the chit, we exchanged numbers and then he called me and said he just blew his motor...

SAME deal as yours, i have been working on it all week as well, and found out he lost the lower (Big) MAG side connecting rod bearing as well, but he has NO piston damage (on stock 05 pistons too) and no cylinder damage...just the rod...but teh rod did "slightly" rub rge cases in its travel, but he is buying LUBA's TM3 crank now (05 900 of coarse)...but strange to see that bearing go out like that...makes you wonder..

but even with the TM cranks, dan does not warranty the rods...but will of coarse work on it, but still...strange how the rod bearings can do that????

good luck bro...keep us posted...

you can also shoot 2poor a PM..he has 2 06 900s, and i KNOW he has extra cylinders too ;)

Strange

From what I understand when I bought my sled from the dealer they said it was something on the Mag side of the crank that came apart, I can only assume a rod bearing failure like you experienced. That would account for the new mag side cylinder they had to put in along with the rebuild. I've always figured I would rather have a little extra oil (protection) at the cost of a little performance.

PM sent, thanks for the tip bro. So far all I have found is 2 different used cyls on ebay, waiting for replies on them

Thanks Jeff, I will get it together for a few more rides this year. The cylinder is on the way, and I just need a few extra parts from Polaris... 2 weeks max. I am building the bottom end as we speak.

My bottom end is built, just need to hit up Polaris for fresh piston rings, y-pipe gaskets, and get my ecu flashed for the slp pipe. Once my cylinder arrives, I can bolt it together, and into the sled.

Great progress Dan :beer;

You find any cracks in your intake boots or any evidence for a cause to that hanging idle you had?

Yeah one of these days I'll throw one of Claude's cables in lol, my stocker just keeps going!

No evidence of an air leak at all, the boots are good still. I did throw in new crank seals for good measure. The one thing I found this morning when installing my pistons.... the piston that got ate up was missing a wrist pin clip. It's possible that was the root of all this mess.
