SNOWEST FORUMS: Member Comments on "Letter to All Members"

Not open for further replies.
I have been visiting Bulletin Boards since 92. I have seen a lot of them come and go. From what I have seen, the ones that succeed are the ones that have active vendors, highly knowledgeable members, and newbies who ask questions. It looks like you will be eliminating one of those groups.
Rest assured we will work hard not to let that happen.

This is also an increddible opportunity to get the forum involved in the magazine, tastefully. Adress certain cumbersome topis in the magazine like I want to do XYZ mod to my seld what do you guys think? It'd be a great opportunity for the experts to take it an run with it.
You will be seeing more of the magazine staff on the site in the months to come.

Content provider?

Great point on the content issue...funny enough, there are some computer geeks here (not saying that we contribute anything useful...)...the model for such 'social sites' is to drive traffic to a business...not to make a business out of the community itself? I attended a presentation yesterday with an industry guy from Neighborhood America, and he made the point that by creating a community of enthusiasts in a particular area, you can have them create content (Creators), which draws additional traffic to the site (Spectators/Joiners/Critics). The additional traffic is what can be targeted for business.

If the business model is to bring more people to the site to have them click on ads or to get their addresses to include in direct marketing campaigns, then you may want to think about who is providing who with content...and who is drawing the traffic to the site. If you let the community grow, it's then up to the owners of the site to figure out how to make it revenue generating.

The other point the guy made, is that whoever is trying to set up such social areas really needs to know what the business problem is that they are trying to solve when launching the site, and create a map to that solve the business problem...asking the forum itself what they think about such a change might be an indication that there is no clear map? (not intended as a dig...just an observation)

How much does Facebook charge? Twitter? LinkedIn? Are there other forum sites that do charge? I couldn't find any on Google. I would be interested to see how those models work...

One last question: "I hope that begining next year you will see NEW CONTENT on the forums start showing up that has never been here before." - any hints on what this content might look like? I have seen reference to new things, but I must have missed the link...

MountainHorse

He is heading up the current private discussion on what can be done to make them work BETTER than the current layout.

That discussion will go PUBLIC next week as we propose some possible changes and ask for all the members to comment on which one THEY prefer.

Glad to hear that he's involved, I haven't read any BS posts from him and he backs every thing up with proof and pics.

The thought that life is going to continue merrily on while you pilot a hurtling car towards and possibly over a cliff is an arrogant statement to make..
Sorry if you read that as an arrogant statement, it was simply intened to be read as a statement of fact. After 30 years in this business with all the ups and downs they have gone through and endured, I think it is honest to say they are likely not going to go away and neither are these forums. They will change, adapt and evolve to meet the ever changing needs of the sport.

The hubby is sitting here jealous that he doesn't have Treadmill. It really IS a good feature to keep up, especially if you're like the hubby that is a hunt and peck kind of person. :)

I do think we should have one swapmeet spot tho. I like the old one but lets just get to one, one or the other. Clint
Agreed.
Right now neither of them works perfectly.
Each has its advantages and drawbacks, and I am uncertain as to where we will go from here on, but am compiling more and more comments from users like you before we make a determination.

Lets not forget people this site made NO money for 11 yrs, but the overhead
was also fairly small.
I honestly do not know what the true costs of operation have been over the last 11 years so I can't comment on that.

Now they are spending money like its falling out of the sky, 30,000 in up grades and probably at least twice that amount 60,000 pr year for the GOD FATHER.

If this gamble doesn't work out, do you really think they won't scrap snowest, and whats worse if it doesn't work out there will be nothing left to salvage.
So I have been promoted to the God Father now eh?

As for scraping SnoWest.
No, I REALLY DON'T THINK there is any chance of that at all. None, Zip, Nada.

We all are a part of a very expensive sport, I will gladly pay $15 a year to get useful info and suggestions, hopefully this subsription gets rid of all the BS. I see this as a snowmobile forum not a place for loosers to get attention. Just like Brad Paisleys song "so much cooler online".

Q: Is there going to be a BS filter on this site with all that new software?
There is some technology that is still beyond our reach no matter how badly we would like to have it!! :)

I hope this whole thing works, and I wish you the best. I'm going to choose to believe that you are making this move out of an honest effort to improve the forum. If you are doing this out of greed may your belt break and your spare be home.

P. S. I really do like that new 1m section of the forum

Fair enough!
Thanks for your comments.

Ok, so you openly start pushing membership to this site.
Great.
How did the site get to this point??
Thru member activity, knowledge and comradery.
It wasn't built by a few people trying to answer questions.

I am afraid what you will end up with is a LOT of fluff and no content.
As has been stated before, I have been going online since 1983, black and white with text only. Anyone remember compuserve?

I have seen a LOT of sites go up and a lot go down.
I am telling you right now.
You have one shot at this.
I don't think you will survive doing what you are doing.
Just having numbers isn't going to keep this site alive.

ok so over 2 nights I have read every post in this thread. All 38 pages.
I am going to keep my posts short as it seems the short posts get answers from Christoper.

My first question is this. If we are on a server with many other sites from HP than how can they honestly know that it is SW that is the drain on the funds. What I mean is that throughout this post it has been said many times that there is no way to know exactly how much SW has cost.

Yet Christoper has stated repeatedly that HP seems to think that in 11 years SW has been a drain and cost money to keep running. IE that sw is a drain.

I would like to hear more on this.

what i have noticed about snowest

everyone that is complaing about the new stuff and the pay is everyone that contributes to site above 10 posts

where everyone that says they will pay has given no help and say they have recieved lots of good information from the site so they will pay for more of the good information

well when the givers are gone.the takers still will get something...nothing

It seems like what a lot of people don't get, is the fact that there are a lot of people that welcome this change and welcome the increase in moderation. Guess there maybe too many snowest bullies around. Read all the posts from Chris and catwoman. They get a lot of pms about this stuff it seems, and they are responding. Something to think about. There are a lot of people on this forum that are only lurkers. Seems they are trying to get those people out of the woodwork and more active.

Dont take this the wrong way. I will pay as I am a hopeless addict and am on this site at least 10hrs a day. I love this community but think this is the wrong way to go.

I also would like to know why it seems that HP is totally unwilling to listen to its community. So many people are saying things that they think could help but it seems to fall on deaf ears. I know I am not putting examples here and thats not helpful but I just dont have time to cut and paste the hundreds of examples.

I really hope the useful members arent all scared away...........
