I don't have a problem paying for something that I use. I have benefitted from the information on this site for free much longer than expected. If you want a free site, then go start one somewhere else with your tech savvy friends. You won't have too many friends that will not want to be paid for their information or time. Even if no changes were made, a small fee would not be too bad.

This is an expensive sport and the help/knowledge is well worth the $10 per year. If you are complaining about the price, think about how much you just spent on your fancy sled and upgrades, clothes, trailer, fuel and maintenance. Everything comes with a price.

It is what it is. I'm not surprised. Will I subscribe? My coin is in the air I'll have to see what side it lands on.

As for trouble makers just logging on to cause problems, that is a given but some people will still do it because they paid and are now entitled to say what they want.
How will you deal with the entitlement issues this will cause?
Will people be banned for breaking the rules? ?wil they get their money back?
Will the rules and agreement change?
Is this now an adult site?
A million challenging issues will come that will need to be addressed.
Any way best of luck with this direction change and project.

justadude,

Personally, I'd like to add that over the last couple of years, many people have said things like "so and so doesn't even get on here any more." The main reason for that was the frustrating trend of people logging on here just to pick fights rather than offer solid, sound information about snowmobiling and machine set ups.

We have always known that that sort of thing needed to be dealt with, but simply did not have the manpower to make it happen. The addition of the moderators has been awesome in this regard. They have proven to be more responsible than the self-policing that we were using.

Now, with the changes that are coming, it is less likely that we will have the "my sled can beat up your sled" arguments because the tendency for trolls to just pop in, stir the pot, then leave will be much reduced.

Yes, there will be those that feel that $9.99 is too much to pay for the camaraderie and friendships that have grown from this forum, but I still think that there is an inherent value to this forum and that value is set to increase dramatically going forward.

I look forward to watching this forum thrive and grow like it never has before. And I will do so without having to stress so much about crap that needs to be deleted or moved that I haven't seen. We have people to help take care of that part.

I for one have saved thousands of dollars on parts and repair bills because of this site. If I didn't know how to repair something I could post my issue and within minutes it seems I have useful info and advice. Sledders are an elite group. Nobody else is so passionate about a hobby as we are. The amount of knowledge and help on this site far out weighs the garbage. I will gladly subscribe. A BIG THANKS goes out to all who have been helpful on this site.
Sam

Unfortunately, all things are about business profit. If print is down, internet is up, where do you go. If it is of value people will pay. Think of the last software program you purchased, you probably don't use 20% of what is available to you. Is CHANGE good? If this CHANGE isn't good we can opt out. Last November many voted for CHANGE and we all will have to pay for it and not be able to opt out.

One last note , boy spell check would be a nice addition
That I CAN FIX!

There are 2 GOOD options for this.

#1.
Consider using FIREFOX as your browser, it has an AUTO-CORRECT feature in it.

#2.
There is a little program called "iSpell"

I only have a one year subscription of the mag, so after that year, 9.99 sounds like a good deal because I will actually get to read the mag. someday they will show up right????
If your having magazine delivery problems, please send me a PM with the details and I will pass it along to the person that can resolve that for you.

I dont think so.... You can say bye bye to me. This is not the only great forum for snowmobiliers. I also own/run an forum with 250,000+ members. Over 6 times the size of snowest. If your not making a profit with this site from your advertising, your doing it wrong. The setup you guys run here is extremly cheap start with and I 150% know all the costs associated with this type of thing. Have you thought about possibly just offering your digital subscriptions? different meathods of advertisement in the swapmeet for a price? there are so many other ways to get your site making money, than to start charging people just to use it. Im sure my feedback means nothing to you, but thats what I have to say about it.

I dont think it should become a pay site i know everyone is hurting in these economic times but i cant see too many people subscribing to the website if it becomes a pay site there are many free sites to talk on none as good as snowest but i think a lot of people would be upset or maybe if you have to make it a pay site make it so that if you subscribe to the magazine you get a free website subscription thanks

are the canadian rates two and a half times more than the us rates? would my magazine subscription renewal fee be 14.95 per year u.s. up here in canada?
I am sure that there are delivery costs associated with Canada that are not factored into the USA prices, but I do not know what they are.

I could be wrong here but... The way it was told to me....and read in some posts on here by admin of the site...

These forums have been sharing servers and connection with all of the other Harris magazines and LDS publication activities...

Harris owns these servers we are currently using and paid for them as well a the connection that they are hooked up to.

The slow down may have been caused by increased activity of ALL of the users of the servers and not just SnoWest.. this at the same time when the snow-season is cranking up and A LOT more members are loging in now that the season is here.

The new servers, I'm told will stand alone and not be shared by ANY other part of the Harris corporation or for any other activity.

The reasons I'm staying and looking forward to a great site are in this post... have a look.

Have to agree with you Mountainhorse. With the Information that is available on here 29.95 for a year doesn't bother me a bit. I look forward to learning and contributing what I can to the new site. People are so afraid of any kind of change. You get set in your ways and are UNWILLING to accept the fact that what is coming is better than what you have. From the sound of it the new forums will having some amazing features. Cant wait to see what it will all do. :face-icon-small-hap

Why invest in all the hardware, maintenance costs, administrative costs, when the forum and db can be ported over to a host that might charge a couple hundred bucks a year for unlimited CPU, bandwidth, and storage with full redundancy/failover capabilities through multiple datacenters? Seems like a huge WOM. It's not like we're processing credit card transactions on this site where you may want more physical control over your infrastructure...

hey.. Someone using thier head. I agree.

Look snowest. What it seems like, is not that you are having trouble affording to run this site, it is that you want to make money. Im sure this is your only goal here and the result will be a loss of some great people.

Because such a facility doesn't exist at a reasonable price.

High performance high bandwidth sites costs lots of money.

Average cost of bandwidth is $150 per Megabyte per second for throughput.

Our pipe idles at 12MB/s and then goes upward towards 48MB/Sec

ISPs make their living on selling bandwidth, and collocation facilities with all the bells and whistles you mentioned don't come cheap either.

And yes, we also looked into moving the entire system into a cloud server, and that was just as bad.

The route we settled in on should give us the most bang for the buck over the long term.

Anything worth having in life comes at a cost. Anything that costs nothing eventually has no value. I know speaking for myself that the Snowest site has aided me to the tune of thousands of dollars and if paying a small stipend for that privelage is required then two thumbs up. I am convinced the dues and fees will be put to good use and the quality of the site will be enhanced. Snowest, thanks for 11 years of free trial, it's been a bargain.:beer;:beer;

And if everyone would just follow the long standing rules, we would have almost no need for moderators to begin with.

What are you trying to say, that myself and others that have posts removed or altered for no reason other than the mod decided to are all a bunch of trouble makers??????

I guess this is the problem I have, YOU are the one that hasn't been here long enough to know one member from another nor the history of said members and now your pointing fingers and backing piss poor moderation at best.

And why is that??

The mod in question tell you we're all a bunch of problem children who shouldn't be believed.

Its not just me pointing out the problems...

Enlighten me please

I am wondering if snowest will be offering a free membership with a paid subscription to the paper copy of the magazine? I usually buy it in the stores because i like to collect magazines to read at work and keep in my house and shop. I think this would be a great option i don't much care for a digital copy and maybe it woud boost your paper copy sales. JMT
