Sledding and Alcohol?

I am not sure how big of an issue this is out west but around here in WI of all places we have a lot of deaths every year and it is usually due to alchohol. This is part of the reason they put 50mph speed limits at night because guys would go to the bar, get drunk and then drive like crazy because we have so many lakes and fields where a guy can go 100mph +...I will very seldom have even one drink at a bar when I am riding. It's not worth it. Not only do you have to watch what you do on the trails but you have to be expecting someone coming around the next corner on your side of the trail.

I am going to keep this civil. 151Viper, like I said, I am not trying to bash you in any way. I am sorry if you think that I did. But I have seen that situation more than once.

I got you all beat. I don’t drink alcohol while I’m riding and I don’t drink on the way home, and I don’t drink when I get home. I don’t drink alcohol period. Got to thinking about it years ago and could not come up with one good reason to drink..... Lots of thing to drink that taste better, I don’t feel like I need to impress anybody, and I hang with guys that would not be impressed anyway, I live my life in such a way that I don’t need to get away from reality ( I can get relaxed without the use of alcohol), and I don’t need an edge socially. I am perfectly happy being me and the only reason I could come up with to justify why I drank involved insecurities or inmaturity. I decided then to walk away. I told the wife to stop buying beer and to get rid of all the liquor in the house. I took lots of crap for a few years, now I can’t tell you how many guys tell me in secret how they wished they had the guts to do what I did. My house stopped being the hang out for a few months, but before long my buddies found out we could hang and have just as much or more fun without alcohol as we could with it. Most of my buddies have now stopped drinking as well. We even watch the UFC alcohol free. Coming home without alcohol on my breath did wonders for the love life, and my wife let me buy my first turbo kit with the money we saved in a year from not buying alcohol. I don't judge others who drink, but I am convinced if you do your either insecure or inmature.

I don't drink often, when I do it's usually for work. I've seen what happens to people when they drink a lot, not too pretty. I usually don't mind if you have a beer at lunch, but there comes a point where my life and safety depends on your asss being able to pull me out of an avy.

Too much at stake to put lives in jeopardy just for the enjoyment of a drink. I'll stick with water. Still surprises me how many other people don't see things that way.

yah one day this one guy we went riding with had at least 4 beer before we headed up the trail to the mountain....it was sad

I dont mind if people drink a beer when we stop every now and then. As we all know you sweat it out pretty fast. However, if your gonna get wasted your not riding with me!

Not really. By the time you're over the buzz, you're just starting to sweat out the alcohol. Booze can be detected transdermally only after 6-10 hours past the time you start drinking. That's why transdermal sensors (like what toyota or nissan was trying to develop in their cars a few years ago) won't work like the breath interlock devices.

I got all kinds of information on that process... work with this stuff every day :)

Ouch, lol, I'm sure many won't appreciate that, but I am about the same, many people don't understand why I don't drink, but I don't really see the attraction to it.....tastes bad, expensive, beer gut, drink too much and make stupid decisions(to drive), make an a$$ out of yourself, etc...

Ya, I'm aware of that, but most of the time the truth hurts. Got to love america, sweet land of liberty.

This is what I think about the subject also. Many of us that ride in the west depend on our buddies to save our azzes in the backcountry. When the chit goes down I know I want my boys on their A+ game, not foggy from a few brews.

Well said! I agree 100%.
Also agree with too much being at stake to take any chances. Not only with my own body and sled but how could I live with myself if I injured or killed someone because of my own inconsiderate attitude. I've seen too many lives shattered and families destroyed because of those who feel that they can have a couple or three drinks and still get behind the wheel. So not worth it!

Quite a few years back a riding buddy of mine was in a head on with another snowmobile. He was coming around a tree and another guy was flying around it from the other way. This guy was hauling butt and my buddy was just cruising behind me (I had just went around it). Long story short, both sleds were totals and guys suffered bumps and bruises (lucky). Sad thing was that the other guy reeked of alcohol and I know he was trying to show off to me. Could have killed someone right there :(

If that makes you feel better that you can't drink anymore because you had a problem then great, good for you, but there's alot of people out there that have a few drinks other then just sledder and i doubt that they are all either inmature or insecure.

FYI: NO need to get hammered but no problem to me anyway to have a few pops, but not forcin them on anyone, maybe a bit of teasing though lol jk!

this is what i call drunk sledding

yeah, mule hit the nail on the head, i accidentally deleted my long arse post, but, heres the gist of it, drinking even a little messes with your ability to rock on the sled. 1 or 2 at lunch, ok, other than that, our ego's are dangerous enough, we dont need to be any more stupid. these things go as fast as some really nice sports car, you wouldnt hop in your corvette after a few beers would you now?

A fact (to you) does not constitute an actual fact!!! Especially, in the examples you use and in it’s context.
It's really an opinion and if you want argue that point it tells me a lot about you!!

Try to contain your self-righteousness. It's not a positive attribute.

QUOTE=Why Not;919360]Nope, I stated that as a fact (to me), not a judgement.[/QUOTE]

^^^^^ I actually agree with the person you are quoting.
But anyone got popcorn?
Lets keep this one civil fellas, has potential to be a good discusion for once. Don't let it turn into a " I'm spnsureede" thread.
