sled training support group.... getting ready to ride

Technically i'm still behind you guys lol. Went from 340+ to 217, now i'm kinda floating at 220. Need to start hitting the gym hard again, i got sick and stopped going and its been a battle getting back in there regularly.

Hey, any way you look at it that's still over a hundred pounds less you are packing around now....

Lighter weight and improved fitness...... you will be amazed how much more fun riding will be now, if you haven't been out already! :)

Nope, haven't been out yet. Hopefully this weekend. The addition of 30 horsepower and a newer chassis probably wont hurt either!

Thanks for the support. Everyone else keep it up as well.

Sooooo...

Riding is only 6 to 8 weeks away for many of us.

How did you guys make out with staying in shape over the summer?

I haven't been to the gym much over the last few months, partly due to a new baby arriving in early July and partly to me just wanting to do outside summer things while the weather is nice. Still been going for a run 2-4 times per week tho so cardio wise I feel stronger than I did in the spring. Gonna hit the gym again starting this week and get back to the sled-specific program we developed last year.... I was super impressed with the results and had by far my best and most fun season of riding ever! Let's hear what you guys have to say and hopefully keep each other inspired and motivated so everyone can have an awesome winter!!!

i'm in already too. started in may v.s last year when i started in september. if i had to go out and ride tomorrow, i would be good to go. strength and cardio are all good. started using Jack3d as a pre-workout drink about 6 weeks ago.... IT WORKS (for me) your results may vary.

lung capacity is way up when i am using it. i credit the jack3d and nitric oxide, helping the oxygen content in the blood, for my increase in capacity.

14 weeks to go before riding and i am going to add more legs, back and core strength exercizes to round out my routine, and target more of the sledding specific muscles.

my diet can use alittle cleaning up, but i am not too bad in the eating dept now. a few bad things, nothing to write home about. LOL!

my stats right now are 6' 185 lbs. should be able to stay there or even drop alittle before riding.

about 6 weeks ago i set my personal best for our 4 mile running loop on the roads around our home. 30.04 not bad for an almost 45 year old worn out motocrosser. LOL!

hope everyone else is doing well, if not... time to get started. every long journey begins with one small step.... THE FIRST ONE. ski

I got out the Army in July and have not worked out since. I lost 5lbs and I been working construction so I credit weight loss and arm strength to my job but I am worried I wont have the cardio and endurance I used to have. I am thinking riding my bike after work or maybe going jogging a few times a week. Went hunting yesterday walked a 5 miles and I notice I was breathing a little harder then usual. So I am worried that when riding hits in 8 weeks that I wont be able to ride like i was in July due to being out of shape. I did change my diet cutting out the soda and limiting the energy drinks. Any other suggestions?

1Fast68 I just saw this thread. Losing over 100 pounds is heroic. If someone has never been over weight I don't think they can understand how awesome that is. If you see this thread give us an update on how you are doing?

I decided in May that I did not want to go into another season tired as heck after weekend of hard riding so I started working out mostly cardio running/riding the bike etc. took a while to get into the groove but cleaned up the diet and now I feel much better as far as conditioning goes. The thing is I don't want to lose all this hard work before riding season so I am looking for some ideas/input from fellow sledders for workout items that can be done indoors without a gym membership. I have two kids and its kinda hard to schedule gym time and its getting too dark to run/bike in the am and after work same situation. Also my man room has been taken over buy the wife for an office for her second job so space is limited as well. Thanks this is a great thread lets keep it going

Just finished week 1 of P90X and have to say, if you do that, you will be in great shape for sledding by the end of the 90 days...

I hate paying for a gym membership too but it really seems to be the best way.... Too many distractions at home for my liking.... When I go to the gym I am focused and I always complete my routine. They also have all the equipment at your disposal to change up your routine frequently to keep things interesting... And people to help you out and make sure you are doing things right.

The routines I used last season focused on balance, grip strength and cardio. The difference it made in my riding was unreal. There is no modification that could be made to a sled that could make that much difference in the skills learned and the fun factor. :)

I also just finished the first week of P90x. I think it is a really good prep for sledding. The plyometric workout is really good. You need to be in pretty good condition to start P90x to get good results the first time through. I only work out at home, don't have time to go back and forth to the gym and I usually don't start working out until late after the family is all asleep. I also have a cardio room with a Life Fitness elliptical and bike and a good treadmill. I also just got an incline trainer but haven't used that as I am focusing on p90x. Push ups, pull ups, dips and other bodyweight exercise can easily be done at home. I also like kettlebells and I do a ton of yoga. BTW, the yoga X is prolly the one workout that knocks people out doing the full 90 days of P90x.

just started last week. 3 days. half hour of weights, half hour of cardio. still weigh 160. i love beer and pizza

I am doing Yoga as well that I must say is surprising I thought it would be kind of a joke but wow it really helps with the core and translates very well to sledding. Thanks for all the comments keep em coming great to hear what everyone else is doing

Have you done it before Matte?

Nope first time through P90x. I have been doing a similiar routine though. All of my strength training is done as a circuit so I keep my heart rate elevated for 60-90 minutes. Then I break that up with cardio and yoga. I also do a pretty steep hike as often as I can get it in. 6 miles round trip with 2000 ft of elevation gain and drop. I was pretty fit for an old guy before I started P90x. I'm going to add back in some yoga as I get used to P90x and maybe some cardio. I am pretty impressed with the synergistic nature of P90x. Back and legs get worked a lot, every workout stresses your heart and lungs somewhat, the yoga and kenpo and plyometric workouts increase your balance. I've had 5 knee surgeries and my knees feel fine even doing the plyometric workout. I credit yoga for my knees feeling better though. Best thing I ever did and I know it sounds fruity.

I have been hitting the cardio (stationary bike, eliptical, and tread mill) 45 minutes a day, twice a week, with 15-20 minutes of abs afterwards. road running 2-4 miles, 2 times a week. upper body lifting once a week. ran 4 miles on the road today, in 32.07. havent ran the full 4 miles in several weeks. I feel pretty good, all things considered.

I still need to add in more weights for back and legs, just gotta suck it up and doo it!

12 weeks to go before we head to togwotee... gonna be here fast. ski

That's a good time for a 4 mile run..... Would be a 45ish minute 10k if you could maintain the pace!!! :)

I am done school on Friday. Then it's time to hit the gym hard. Going riding with Bret Rasmussen this winter so need to be ready for a butt whoopin'!!!

Just Checking In, someone asked for an update on myself. I have been able to keep all the weight I lost off. I can tell you hands down I'm in better shape now than ever after losing the 120+ pounds. Last years snowmobile season was great, Albeit too short. There was a very noticeable and obvious difference in my riding ability and stamina throughout the days I was able to ride.

Lately I have been very busy with work, racing and other activities that are winding down. I plan on getting back into a serious workout/diet routine very soon to prepare once more for the upcoming season. If anyone has any specific questions feel free to ask away.
