sled training support group.... getting ready to ride

saturday update: approx 8 weeks togo, 186 pounds this morning @ weigh in. lost about 14 pounds since sept 12. this am i ran the 4 mile road loop in a 15-20+ mph south, southwest wind beating on me, for what seemed the whole run :D

i managed to run it in 34:03:83. a huge improvement in pace, lung and heart capacity, as well as final leg, kick strength. never imagined that time on a calm day, let alone a windy one.

i am very pleased with the progress that is comming. i am way ahead of last year. did alot better than the 3 mile time of a few weeks ago. feeling great except for chaffed nipples. LOL! anyone have any help for that when running in the cold??? never experienced it before. :D

next goal moved.... 30 minutes even for the 4 mile loop. i'll have to trim a minute a mile off the time. its a lofty goal but, with the right training, mind set and calm wind day. :D :D :D i just might be able to doo it!

Last year was my first year on an M1000. On really deep snow days, I was shot by 1:00. I was thinking about selling the M1000 and going back to an M8, but I love love love the power of the 1000. Decided getting in shape was the only good solution. I usually get to the gym 2-3 times a week, but am going to step it up for November and December. Feel better, getting stronger- unfortunely I love to eat so I am not really losing any weight....

Ha Ha lol,,,great to meet goals,, it always feels good. when i was in highschoool i ran 3 miles in 15:57. Granted it was a cross country race, but staying in shape at 34 and training for a race when your 17 are a little different. when i run i never time myself, im cool with what ever pace comes to me that day. i dont want to push and pull any muscle's. I'll save that for the mountains.... oh and tape pasties or black electrical tape work good for the chafeing. and never ware a shirt with any lettering or aligators, or polo guys on them unless you like to bleed when you chafe Ha ha ha,,,, Wooooooooohooooooo! for SNOW

Just saw this thread, and wanted to chime in. I'm young (22) and have always been in relatively good shape (never had to work out to be that way, just lucky), but I recently moved in with some guys that work out everyday in some way, and motivated me to simply do push ups and pull ups (alternating between the two each day). Last year I could ride a sled, but found it difficult to really throw one around. I'm now on the biggest sled I've ridden, and originally thought it just handled alot better (I'm already comfortable/capable on my new sled- just an 04 RMK 800) than my old one and other friends sleds. But then my buddy got on it and couldn't hardly do anything on it. So basically just the little bit I've been working out has made sledding WAY easier, and thus more fun. What you guys are doing will make riding way more enjoyable, so keep it up. Not that you don't already know that, but its good to hear. Congratulations to you all, and have an awesome season!

Been sick for about 5 days, and did not work out the last half of last week. Hunted hard despite the cold on Friday night, 4 miles of walking, 10+ on both saterday and sunday. Thought nothing of it but felt it this morning. Workouts will resume tomorrow, thinking of joining the Y in town so I can get some cardio in during the week and because I really don't like the bowflex as much as freeweights. Only a few weeks to go, I need a week of catchup to get back on track but by next week I should be back in the swing of it and making progress.

You guys are making huge goal, GOOD JOB!! I have set my first goal at 136, that's 20 lbs by the end of december. I was at 140 before I got sick so I think the next 4-5 in a month is doable but I'm going to have to push for it. I've slimmed a bit but I have also gotten stronger so I'm sure I've been burning fat and building muscle yielding a zero weight change for the past few weeks and that's good but I want to see the numbers go down...

been working out regularly n the upperbody/core is in good shape...
Now to deal with my traitorous chicken legs ;)

havent seen any updates from you guys in a few weeks, you still with it? getting closer to riding season everyday. i am down to 184-185 body weight now. i am down 15-16 pounds from my starting weight. the scale isnt showing big changes but, my clothes and the mirror really show the difference. i still would like to be 180 by jan first. as long as turkey day doesnt get me too bad, i'll be fine, i think.

i am lifting 2 days a week, cant bring myself to the 3rd day this year, for some reason. also i am still on my cardio 4-5 days a week, with every other cardio workout having 15-20 minutes of abs.

most of my aches and pains are doing well except, i developed shin splints from running so much. so i bought a new set of shoes and i started stretching more before and after the runs to stretch the calve muscles to help alleiviate the pain. i am doing better but, i dont want to stop running so i'll just take it easier than i had. pain is just a state of mind. LOL!

with that said, i am closer to my 4 mile goal of 30 minutes flat. this a.m. i ran it in 31:20:03 that puts me below 8 minutes a mile. not stellar but, how many 43 year olds(close to 44), do you know who can run 8 minute a mile avg or less???

firearm deer season opens monday, i'll be hittin the woods hard today and tomorrow to see if i can get one more with the bow before the guns mess stuff up for the year. the rut has been in full swing here for the last 10 days or so . many different bucks (no real shooters) on the trail cams. still holding out for the nontypical i have on film. i passed 5 different bucks up within shooting range in the last 5 days, all year and a half olds. if i can keep the neighbors from killing them, we will have a nice batch of bucks next year.

hope you guys are doing as well as i am feeling. keep it up, it is worth it. ski

Still workin it 5 days a week most weeks, there was a couple weeks that the snooze button got me and ended up with a 4 day week. I got sick and worked threw it but workouts were pretty weak as I felt like crud but now I'm back at it and feeling good, added reps to ever portion of my workout last week and this week I feel really good about it.

Ended up with a pirated copy of the P90X program and I'm going to give it a try. I'm hoping that following a program will help set a higher pace then I would on my own, not to mention adding some cardio

I'm working out less, but still dieting. 110 pounds lost as of today in 9 months.

Everyone Give up? 122# lost for me. Looking forward to my first ride in a week or so. Whenever i can find someone to ride with!

nope, i am still in it. have 23 more days to go, i am near my goal of 180 pounds by our departure date. i need to lose 5 more pounds. i am working out upper and lower body 2 times a week, and cardio 4 times a week. one day off for rest.

i am at the point in my cardio where i can push at a moderate to advanced pace for 60 minutes. i can control my breathing ALOT better. for the most part i can run, bike, eliptical for 60 minutes with only breathing through my nose. (no panting, and gasping).

my last 3 weeks i need to really clean up the diet more than i have. i should be right on target.

fast68, YOU ARE THE MAN!!!! losing almost 125 pounds. that is like losing another person. THAT IS GREAT! keep up the good work. ski

Went riding last weekend.... rode 3 days; something I have never done first trip of the year, and actually felt pretty good after.

Just a comment on the "breathing thru the nose" thing.... while it may be a benchmark of sorts as to your improved efficiency I would be curious to see where your heart rate is at now versus where it was a few months ago. It may be time to bump up the level. Are you doing any intervals, or mostly just trying to pace yourself thru the cardio part of your workout?

good thread guys ,been trying to beef up the lower back for the season...creatin and n02 and other supplements dehydrate you ,do not take when in the mountains as it will compound dehydration and increase amounts of fluid needed..

i dont think N.O. dehydrates you. it expands your blood vessels so if you are already dehydrated you will experience more side effects of dehydration. without proper hydration your not going to perform to your abilty anyways

do not take creatine in whilst in the mountains unless your willing to drink A LOT of water. It can shut down your kidneys or just plain out ruin them by not drinking a lot of water.

And for people with bad knees who are running, my advice is either go run on a track, or just on grass as both are easier on the knees.

Oh, and right now I'm at 150lbs 195bench max, 250deadlift(not max), and 175squat max sooooo ready to see how much easier it is to throw around the ol' sled ;)

every week i up my intensity. i started only doing 30 minutes of low level cardio. now i am up to 60 minutes of moderate to high paced cardio. i alternate intervals, of moderate and high output throughout the workout. letting my heart rate fall back to acceptable levels. then cycle it back up throughout the training session.

little over 3 weeks to go. good luck to all of us on our training and goals. ski

weighed in at 183 this am, 3 more pounds to go in 13 days. still hoping i can do it. cleaned the diet up alot. need to do better though. work stress is killing me though. really hoping i can keep this up into the sledding season and maybe get down a bit lower. time will tell. good luck to all that have been following this.

fast68 keep on going bro!! you are by far ahead of us. ski

Technically i'm still behind you guys lol. Went from 340+ to 217, now i'm kinda floating at 220. Need to start hitting the gym hard again, i got sick and stopped going and its been a battle getting back in there regularly.
