flatlander here, getting ready for another fantasic year of sledding and high elevation strenuous physical exertion...

anyone else training to lose weight, get in shape for the upcomming season???? i train each year due to living at 900 feet of elvation, and the lodges i "normally" frequent are over 8000. i get AMS (accute mountain sickness), very often and severely. training and Rx therepy have helped ALOT.

if anyone is interested or would like to join in, and show and get support. this could be a great way to get motivated. i'll start with my stats, and what i my goal is.

i weight lift all year for maintainence (nothing serious). my diet normally sucks bad, and i have a serious addiction to coca-cola. started sept 12th with a body weight of 200 even. cleaned up my diet, quit soda cold turkey. (have only had 2 12oz cans since the 12th). i ran 1 mile the 12th, and paid for it. LOL!

as time goes on, i ramp up my weight training, increase the cardio workouts, and clean the diet more and more. i am striving to reach the goal of 180 lbs, december 28th. we leave for outwest the 29th (staying out there 3 weeks this year). the goal is to be able to run 5 miles (real road running not on the tread mill), and or be able to do an hour of cardio, at close to max output as i can, without gasping for air at my current elevation.

i normally weight lift a day, then run a day, with one day a week, no working out (rest day). again i ramp up to this. right now, i am running 3 days a week and lifting only one. as time goes on, i will lift 3 days a week, and cardio 3 or 4 and go seven days a week, no rest day near the end. this morning i ran 2 miles and felt great. mid week last week, i was down to 190 (10 pounds in 2 weeks) but, with the weights, and running giving me alittle muscle, and not eating as clean as i was the first 10 days, i gained alittle back. 13 weeks to go..... i did it last year, i can do it again.

who else is in??? ski

I was going to start working out but I figured adding 80 hp was easier! Are those M8'S ready?

just need to clean the powervalves, and wash them up. well, i gotta put a slp pipe and clutching in mine. LOL! you couldnt stand it and had to buy boost huh???? ski

It was fine for Canada and the UP, but a little under powered out west. It was one of those things you dont know, until you try it. I figured Alan's kit was about as reliable as it gets. Should work well for anything I can get myself into!

I thought you would have boost on that M series by now.

yup im already gettin in shape. I got soccer at least 6 days a week, and I generally lift 2-3 days a week aswell. Right now I weigh 145 but my goal is to get to 160 at some point or other. During soccer season that is down right impossible because of all the cardio I do, but once I can reduce the amount of endurance training and the high intensity games(I play all 90 minutes every game) I can start to add on muscle mass.

Its a dang good idea. I did it a few years ago and did the same thing...I quit pop all together and for the most part quit beer. Hit the treadmill and went from 185# down to 165# in a short time. I felt the best I ever did starting the year. But know its tough to even get back into the rythem again. And btw im right back to the 185 again. Kudos to you!

Yep I too started working out, never had much reason to bother but sledding has me wanting more from every minute up there.

Working on cardio for a month now, I run two miles three mornings a week... OK I run a solid mile then walk a bit and run the last 1/4 as hard as I can. Started this at the 250 mark and we will see what happens. I went and pulled my bowflex out of storage and I'm setting up my "man room" as we speak to start getting some tone back in thing. I'm also behind the ball this year after taking a pretty bad spill on the bike this summer and my shoulder is not looking good. I can't even start my sons 550 with my left arm. So strength training in the back, shoulders, and core will be my goal. Getting to dark to keep running so I'm going to end up with less cardio from here on out but I need to get this should back up to snuff.

Yiu beat me to it, I was wondering the same thing. How many people start an exercise or weight program before sledding season, not just all year?

I better get started. Hmmm where do I begin?

Skidooboyedk: I live half the year at sea level and half the year at 7,000 feet.
Luckily, AMS is no a problem for me. Three things to remember this year to help try and avoid it. If you are going for three weeks, try not to ride the first day you are there.... I know it sounds like a cruel joke, but the more your body can acclimatize, the better off you are. The other one is HYDRATE. On the road trip out, be pounding the water, gatorade, etc...NOT SODA, or Beer (blasphemy!!!) neither will help with hydration both are actually diaretic (DE-hydrating) The last thing is sleep! The more rest you have before the next day of riding, the better.

Good luck!

Been dieting and exercising for 5-6 months now, started out mainly as a diet change and a push to get in shape, lately i have been thinking about how it will help me riding this winter. No pop, no gatorade, no alcohol ( I never drank much anyways). No fast food, Pizza or anything like that. Just food thats good for me, lots of fruits, veggies, whole grains, protein etc.

I go to the gym 5-6 times per week, for 1.5-2hrs each day. I do at least an hour of cardio and lift weights for usually at least 30min, quick sets, not long breaks in between, gotta keep the heart rate up.

I'm 23 years old and have always been a big guy, but I've always been active and I carry weight well so people usually don't realize how big I really am/was. I began this little adventure at 6'3" and 340 pounds. Proud to say I'm now down to 260 and still going for more. Its not easy, but i think the results are worth it.

Good luck guys.:thumb:

thanks for the support guys, lets keep this going.

murph, i am with you and follow your advice already. always pre-hydrate, and try to over hydrate at elevation with mostly water, v8 juice, fruit juice ect... no beer, or soda (tastes terrible when taking diamox for AMS anyway). taking in more carbs at elevation, hydration and ENOUGH SLEEP, are really the keys to doing well out there for a flatlander.

last year i started taking ginko biloba to help with the AMS, also i started diamox (perscription ams medication), a few days prior to going out there. we ramped up the elevation alittle at a time, v.s driving right to the lodge at 9000 and getting at it.

the first night we stayed about 2500' in nebraska (had to stop early due to the HUGE ice storm on xmas eve), the next night we stayed at 4000' (scottsbluff). the next 2 nights we stayed in jackson wyoming with no riding at all. the 5th day we drove up to the lodge at togwotee (8500') and started riding that day. there after we stayed at the lodge and i did better physically than i ever have. i base most of it on the meds, and easing into the elevation. this year the plan is similar.

today i made it to the gym, 30 minutes of moderate paced cardio, 15 minutes of abs. was sweating my butt off afterward. had chicken salad sandwich on wheat and a whey protein shake for after workout meal.

tomorrow i am scheduled to lift.

keep at it guys, temporary sacrifice for long term goals. ski

long day at work today, almost skipped the gym. sucked it up, took one for the team, showed up, and still managed a good workout.

ANYONE can go to the gym when they feel good. when you dont want to go, and you still make the effort... that is the difference between committed, or not.

be committed, it will pay off shortly. rest day tomorrow, gotta get the lawn mowed. ski

I get and work out in the mornings. Hard for me to get started every day but I'm glad I do it. I have WAY more energy after working out ... at least half the day. Tonight I have a union meeting till 8:00 and I'll be lucky to stay awake.

Feeling good so far

Last year I did p90x.My starting weight was 190 lbs.Stopped drinking sodas and eating ice cream and two months later 160 lbs.Best year I ever had riding.Pretty brutal workout with doing strength and cardio 6 days a week but well worth it.

This will probably sound funny, but maybe not to this group, but my only reason to lift weights or do any physical excercise other than normal work is so that in the winter I don't run out of gas before my sled does!! Sure I feel better in the off season when I work out on a regular basis but it's all just for the winter in my mind!! I got married a year ago and the weight lifting stopped and I've been a slacker getting back into it, but the winter's coming so I've started up again, hope it doesn't cost me too much having missed it a bit during off season!! Best of Luck to everyone this winter!!!!!

Mjunkie, you will be suprized.... muscle memory is a great thing. you can take ALOT of time off, and when you start back up, it will suck for alittle while. but not like someone who has never lifted before. and you will grow faster than someone never lifting before. muscle memory is the key.

rest day today, going to mow lawn (3 acres). tomorrow our archery deer season opens, so i am going to either run after the morning hunt, or before the afternoon hunt. ski

started the weekend off on a good foot. cardio for 36 minutes, abs for 15. hoping to run and or lift over the weekend. how are you guys doing???

ski

Dong well , got about 30 mins in this morning no cardio but flogged my self pretty good and got a killer ab workout today. Still playing catch up on the bad shoulder so I focus mostly on the shoulders , abs , and cardio when I can. I climb 3-4 telephone poles a day so my legs and arms get worked hard there.

Not showing any changes but I feel way better and that has helped me to pay more attention to my food intake.
