Something is missing as water comes out it fast and in large amounts.

pressure relief valve, by any chance?

There's usually a rupture disc that blows out at a certain pressure.... time to get a new one of those?

Freeze plug. It must have been frozen over the winter... Just get a new one for 20 bucks and screw it back in.

Official name I have found out; thermal relief valve. Keeps water from over heating when the handle is not depressed. Yes, it did freeze over the winter. You think there would be an easy way to drain the thing!

If your washer has a soap tank, run some antifreeze through it, just enough to get the mixture into the pump.
