polaris sportsman 500 question... motor problem!!

thinking of buying a sportsman 500 from a guy. he said the last time he rode it, he heard a rattling in th eengina it quit.. it still turns over and the oil is clean..

any ideas?

if it is a 2000 or older machine the stator was known to come apart, or buen out, won't run, the updated stators were made better and didn't have any problems, thats all i know

Maybe you should do a quick compression check and/or oil analysis. Should be a lab in the yellow pages or most heavy equipment dealers will have a complete sample kit with postage label and all.

I do this and get the seller to agree that if it comes back good, I pay. If it comes back bad, you pay. $60-80 either way. This test will show all including any past bad air/air filter issues and all ring and bearing wear. Good luck. EW

BTW, I have a 99 & 01 Sportsman 500 that both have a bazillion miles of snow plowing, hunting, brush piling, firewood skidding, and just plain use. No issues ever.

I have seen some stator, starter in that rotating group give some problems before in the early 2000's. Haven't heard a peep on the 500's since then though. It's crazy how bullet proof those things really are. Most never see any maintenance.
