Polaris IQR Mountain chassis debate:

attachment.php

I need to get my Meathookers Feethookers!

They are in my shop waiting for you Gary.

Oh my electrical gremlin showed up again. Unplugged the headlight and it went away. Grrr hopefully its just a short and not the new magneto.

I'm clue less

I have my mind set on an IQR. What I cannot decide is if I just want to have Ice Age Mfg. make me a set of custom 163" rails for the stock skid or should I buy an EZ-Ryde from Brad or even buy an 2010 skid off of an RMK? I'm trying not to spend to much money. It is said that the stock IQR skid is heavy but getting the rails made is $500 versus spending $3000 for an EZ-Ryde. If a complete rear skid from an RMK is close to the rail price then I'll go that direction. Also, from those who know, what motor is best? I REALLY like the idea of an 800 triple out of a Polaris XCR but have seen 800 CFI, 800 VES Mono blocks, OEM 600's, 660's, 777's, 797's, 1100's and even a WC 1200. Whats best? Also, here is what my prelimanary setup ideas are, 2008 IQR chassis, 2003 800 triple XCR motor, 163" Dragon skid, Van Amburg 163" tapered tunnel, Brad's pipes, Brad's motor plate, SLP porting, SLP VES elimanation, Zbroz 43" front end, BR Tech hood and screens. Feed back is very much wanted!!!!! PM8.

scott, I like my iqr way better than either dragon I had. It is the most commanding rider position out there. I found the iq to be a bit easier to lay over in off camber turns, but i still have the race a-arms on the iqr, I'm sure with the rmk front on it it will be tons better. Mine trades marks consistently with my bud's '08 d8 163 and I only have a stock (except for the pipe) '01 800 motor and a 156x2" camo under it.
By the way the only way the "geometry" is the same between the iq and iqr bulkhead is that the tunnels both fit it and the a-arm mounts are the same spacing. Other than that there is not much resemblance.
With about 160 or so h.p. and a bit better track this thing will easily punish any new production sled on the hill:D

??????????

I got to say I have been contemplating building one of these myself, however I keep reminding myself that just because a sled is super fun to ride doesn't meen that it is abetter mtn. sled. I rode a 25K rev mod and loved every minute of it but I know that my 15k d8 is a superior mtn sled. The fun factor (aka. quick handling) is often a unstable chassis and that is not good with high horsepower, highrisk (real mtn.) ridin' oriented sled. I think I will keep my dragon & buy a assault 4 when I want to jump big $h*t. A well done IQR mtn. mod is a centerfold of a sled though,, and has been since holz brought one to the puyallup snow show in what,, 05!!

You haven't rode one if thats the conclusion you came to.(I'm not bashing you here, I just disagree with your conclusions)
They are far more stable then a dragon, thats one of the reasons I built one.
There are some drawbacks and I listed one, admittedly sometimes during the build I wished I had just bought a dragon. And I did have to make some adjustment before I felt it was right. In the end its a better sled.

If you want an assault just pull your swaybar get better shocks and swap out the tracks. Thats all they are, they cannot be compared as a jumper sled to the IQR.

My offer is open to you as well, if you want to ride one and are in or around my area you are welcome to take a rip on mine. I bet you'll be looking for a roller to donate your dragon motor to.

Its is possible!

YOU may be right. I rode doos since the rev in 04 and the last french connection I made was a 05 440 racer w/ a 800HO and a 141 and I just finished that project a few weeks ago. These race dpt. sleds are always good. I am very impressed w/ polaris' mtn chassis once the suspension and track have been upgraded. The reason I would pick the Assault is the factory suspension / track length should handle abuse w/ a smile. + they are cheaper new than building a one off, and hardcore sleds meet hardcore endings!

Sound like a hell of a build. Angermanagement890 on this site just did that exact build except he had Ruggland do the pipes. If you have some Q's he likes to BS and probubly has some A's. Though a triple would be sweet, They are a little more expensive to fit due to the custom pipes that need to be made. With a big bore twin, there isn't a hole lot of chassis mod necessary. I am kind of a cupcake and run 600 and 660's becuase the chassis is light and strong enough to embarrass most stock sleds off trail. If you are trying to save weigh and cost, I would recommend the RMK skid. Would I run a holtz or EZ-ryde, F YEAH!!! but I am too cheap. In the steep and deep, the RMK skid works great and I have to disagree with the above post about the sway bar, I have with and without, I like it without. I traded of throttle stability for some killer maneuverability. I like how easy it is to throw around without the sway bar, but this is all just personal preference. If you shop and don't mind used parts, you can put together a pretty nice Mtn IQr for 6-8g's. If you go with the custom everything and the triple you will be somewhere up near $13-16K but with custom sleds, the sky is the limit.

The e-z ryde and the 43" wide z-broz is awsome! However the rmk front and rear are not too far behind if you use good shocks and have them set up for you. Way less money also. I agree with the above that the 600 is tuff to beat. The 600 long stoke motor has been a peice of cake to tune, and will scrare the bigger stuff to death.Very quick with alot of torque. It all about weight to HP. I plan on biuiling another this summer using the 600. It will be either a 600 factory twin pipe mod, roughtly 150-160 hp.,depending on heads and porting.Or I will do what RMKRIDER did and turn it into an 800. Carls did three of these this year with no complaints. What ever you do, don't cut corners on the importantant stuff. Do what your budget allows, with the idea you can update down the road. Start with a new chassis if at all possible, and a good tunel. I am not a fan of tunel ext.or keeping the stock parts. It is an issue of weight.I want this thing to be as light as possible. Then I don't need as much motor

We should put together a IQR Mountain ride sometime. I would like to look at some other projects and see how they compare. I must have looked at Jet Fuels and Meathookers a 1/2 dozen times when I was doing mine.
What do you think?

Taking the plunge

Just went to the local Polaris dealer today and bought an 09 skid and will probably go over the hill to Yakima and visit the Van Amburg shop tomarrow. Now all I have to do is find a reasonably priced roller and an XCR 800 motor. probably won't finish this build until the end of this year so I'll get some pics up for you guys when I finish. Thanks for the info and Angermangement890 is answering my Q's with some VERY helpful A's. PM8.

P.S. - keep the pics coming of ANY IQR Mtn. conversion

Here are some pictures of the IQR I built this fall. The more time I spend on this sled/chassis the less I think I would sell it. It handles extremely well, very balanced and confidence inspiring.

Angermanagement, is that an Van Amburg tunnel? Also how did the mountian addiction gas rack work out?

Yep, its a VE Boondock, Shannon assembled the tunnel and bulkhead for me, I had the pleasure of seeing your 2 IQR's, they pretty much are works of art. So far the Mtn Addiction rack is working out pretty sweet, I liked it better than the VE gas rack because of the low profile.

How much do you think it would cost me to build one if I already have the triple (wc), the skid and track (m-10 W2 159, 162 extreme) and a whole gen2 mod to steal components from/part out? It'd be a van am boondocker again for sure. I'd like to keep huge tunnel clearance too if thats possible. I should talk to Brad about it some too I guess...

Angermanagment, That is a sweet build. Makes me wish I had done the same instead of buying the dragon..................next time:beer;

By the time you get a chassis, tunnel and front end and get it all together, probably $10,000 might be less depending on what you get the donor sled for.
