Guys:

Dont worry about the snow levels.

I am on my 20th year going to I.P

If the snow is bad, you can get to areas where you never could when the snow was 10' deep. Boondocking in the trees is great fun when the snow is packed. You can go DOWN into areas and feel like you can get back out.......

Whatever the conditions, just adapt to them and you will have a great time.

Some of the most fun our group has had, was had when the snow levels were the worst.

There is great riding all around the blue creek area, and the kilgore area in the trees, with some good pulls as well.

At this point, with the base layer so unstable, I hope it does not dump snow for the rest of the season. That is a recipe for disaster,,,,,,,,,,

Yep, we need snow, but that base layer determines much of the safety factor for the season, and the base layer is not bonded to the ground.. Careful what you wish for.

Our crew will be out there FEB 6-12 if anyone wants to meet up for a beer at Ponds, or shotgun, or lakeside............ Let me know!!

Jeff

Whoa now, There are MANY creeks & canyons that are absolutely deathly when you drop into them especially when snow is low. I appreciate the confidence that Jeff is putting in our back yard here, BUT the Fremont County Search and Rescue would absolutely disagree with dropping into places with low snow. There still is not enough base to be "going where no man has gone before" and expect to just pop right back out, pack your sleeping bag if you want to do that stuff.

You KNOW the snow is coming.
At some point or another there will be some BIG DUMPS and everyone in this part of Easter Idaho will FLOCK up there after having waited for good riding for months.

And then yes, your right, the recipe for disaster will be served up if peeps are not very careful.

But in the valley, it will be very welcomed.

Spent yesterday in Island Park, mostly in the Black Canyon trail area.

The NORTH side of the loop was MUCH better than East, West or South.

There was lots of fresh snow, the trees were completely white, and there was more than enough snow to dive off the trail and play.

Will post more later this evening.

Rode the east side yesterday. Scary conditions... Powder is deep but bottomless. Counted tons of spots where others had nailed land mines. What we really need is a heat wave or some rain to establish a decent base and then let it snow. Too bad I dont control the weather!

Very strong high level jet stream winds across the central and
eastern pacific will bring at least three storm systems into
southeast idaho in rapid succession...about every 18 to 24 hours.
The first storm on wednesday will produce only local 1 to 3 inch
snow amounts in the mountains with little or no accumulation in the
lower valleys. The second storm system late wednesday night and
thursday has the potential to produce 5 to 10 inches of snow in
the mountains with mixed rain and snow in the lower valleys. This
series of events may wrap up friday and saturday with a stronger
storm system that shows potential for significant snow accumulations
at all elevations

Current Conditions:
As of 6 AM Wednesday, 1/20/10 we have received
2 to 4" of new snow in the last 24 hrs. and 6" total in the last 48 hours.

we were there last week and the temps were high during the day and the snow was settling fast. they need more snow. was getting hard to find any powder to ride.

the trails were awesome though. some of the best trails i have been on.

I am not advocating going blind down a ravine or anywhee else for that matter. I am saying that low snow conditions give you opportunities to explore areas that you normally cant climb to, or cant drop into with normal snow conditions.

There is no way that I would blindly just head down a gulch or ravine. I have been part of getting those folks out of those situations.

I guess I was taking it for granted that people should use their heads and good reason.........

Ok, stay in the trees........

BOTH!

There is snow and the trails are fine.
But there is a serious lack of POWDER relative to the number of riders that have been up the trails looking for places to turn off and go play.

I will be back up there on Friday and Saturday.
Hopefully the recent snow we have seen this week will add up and make a real difference up high.

We had a good time playing in the little canyons/ravines off of Black Canyon Trail last week. Problem is that there is only 30-35 inches of snow up top. I was still digging down to trees on Saturday when I got stuck.

(Snow is about waist deep over rocks right there.) Stepped off the sled, and went right to the bottom.
