Island Park Snow Conditions

Well, I have 10 "Never-Evers" riding with me in the valley darting off the trail NOT knowing any better, and not one of them hurt a sled.

At 40 inches I think we are JUST coming into the SAFE-ZONE now.

And there is MORE SNOW up higher..

Rode the canyon between henreys and lions head yesterday. Wasnt any fresh snow but there was still plenty of untracked powder when we got up in there. Climbed a few good hills and boondocked till my heart was content. Was a good ride minus digging out my rookie brother on my summit 1000 (talk about a sore back). With this fresh snow it should be good tommorow.

Was planning on heading tommorrow and bringing the girlfriend. The plan is ride from Macks in to warm springs feed the fish then head to that eatery place down the trail (dont know what its called) then loop back around. Does anybody know how many miles roughly that is and what that eatery place called?

I think it is like meadow creek or meadow springs or something. The more I think about it I am 99%b sure it is the meadow creek lodge; great place to eat.

Many avalanches occurred the last few days--running full depth (up to 12 feet) and wiping out mature trees--and with a fatality on Sat.
We have 1+ feet of "sugar" that is now covered with significant wind slabs (2--5'+ ).
Stay away from steep slopes, gullies and run-out zones today!
Most deaths occur when the hazard is CONSIDERABLE.
"Pockets" exist with a higher hazard than the general forecast rating.

We went to Island Park Village and rode the 5th and 6th, snow was awesome. The 5th wasn't the best visiablty but we made the best of it. We went up toward Jefferson but got hard to see, then decided to go over around black canyon and snow was deep rode in 18 to 24 inches of powder. The 6th went to Jefferson and around Willow creek snow was great getting a good base. Think they could use just a little more couple of times in one area dug down and found some grass but the grass might have been tall too. Never hit anything really just the top of something under that deep powder maybe twice. Hope for more fresh snow will be back for the expo in March.

My dad just got back from the cabin on Henry's lake yesterday and said there's about 8-10" of new stuff down low, and a foot+ once you get higher with a really good base, I might be heading up tomorrow or Friday to check it out. Drive safe and have fun.

need some help

I host a festival of Snow Hawk riders every year somewhere in the US this year we are looking at either Cooke City or Island Park.

This year will be around 100 Snow Hawk and traditional sled riders.

Which one has the better riding areas???

Also if we go to Island Park and stay at the Sawtelle Mountain Resort is there great riding from there?

Current Conditions:
As of 6 AM Wednesday, 2/24/10 we have received a Trace of new snow in the last 24 hrs., and a few flakes are flying on the peaks this morning with some winds gusting to 20.

AVALANCHE hazard is CONSIDERABLE with DANGEROUS conditions in some areas. We have 1+ feet of "sugar" that is now buried by significant, multi- layered wind slabs (2--5'+ ).

Note the death of a skier in the Tetons on Sunday. Our western peaks are also "shaky".

Remember--"Pockets" exist with a higher hazard than the general forecast rating.
