Island Park Snow Conditions

2 more weeks till i make the 1600 miles trip to IP. We will be stayin in the village and i'm sure hoping that the riding is going to be as good as it usually is when i go earlier in the season. Thanks for all the updates and this thread will be my homepage for the next few weeks... Let it snow, let it snow, and avy condtions improve!

Hang in there a bit longer before you make up your mind.
I might drive up tomorrow and see if I get lucky and find something good. But I am not holding my breath for any great snow.

It just got too warm too fast, and we have had far too little snow lately.

Tomorrow its supposed to be 43 degrees in the valley!

You guys have an incredible play ground up there. My first time to island park was last weekend. What a cool place. We rode mostly on the south side of Mt. Jefferson. The snow was hard packed and crusty so that part sucked but with big powder that place would be awesome.

well, its alitte more then a week from go time, and I guess i need to hear how the conditions are, whether they be good, bad, or ugly we are still coming and hope to find some snow to ride on somewhere.

Put it this way, I've put my sleds up for this year if get a major snow then I might get them out again!!!! the snow is going FAST!

is there even going to be enough snow to ride? Is there any snow left in the village at all? damn mother nature is a *****....

There are still some good, higher-elevation areas to explore, but we are getting closer to the day
when "trailering" will be required to reach your favorite areas. Bare ground is showing up along the
trails, and lower elevation trails are getting harder to negotiate.

Dangerous areas of unstable snow
still exist on cold, northerly slopes and on wind-loaded slopes on any aspect--
in some areas.
Although our snowpack has settled quite a bit, do NOT be fooled by the seemingly solid slabs--they
were continuing to fail this past week!! The Reas Peak and Mt. Jefferson areas remain "shaky", with
large pillows, chutes and bowls that could still slide (see 3/9
photo from Mt. Jeff).

It would appear that the season is now OFFICIALLY over...

Island Park / West Yellowstone--Snow and Avalanche Information

There are still some good, higher-elevation areas to explore, but we are getting closer to the day
when "trailering" will be required to reach your favorite areas.
Dangerous areas of unstable snow
still exist on cold, northerly slopes and on wind-loaded slopes--
in some areas.

NOTE: THIS (3/18) WILL BE THE LAST REGULAR UPDATE OF THESE WEB PAGES FOR THE SEASON--UNLESS
SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN WEATHER OR AVALANCHE CONDITIONS OCCUR. WE WILL LEAVE THE PAGES ON-
LINE SO YOU CAN CLICK ON THE LINKS FOR ANY OF THE INFORMATION YOU NEED. DON'T HESITATE TO CALL
OR EMAIL IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS.

Current Conditions:
As of 6 AM Thursday, 3/18/10 we have received no new snow in the last 24 hrs. This will be the last regular update this season, unless major changes in Wx or avalanche conditions occur.

I'am little late on this post but I am writting it anyway. We went riding around Jefferson the 11th and 12th and was surprised it wasn't as bad as I thought. You get up high the snow wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. We did see spots that we got stuck in 5 weeks earilier but we did find good snow. We did some s$&t holein and found good untracked snow and learned some new areas, so that right there was worth it to us. We even got stuck a a couple of times. I don't know if its that much worse than it was but Iam sure there is still places to explore if a guy will search for it. Island park was pretty low never had to go across asphalt to get gas before. This trip wasn't the worst I've been on I'll be back that is for sure. I don't know if i'd make a long drive to get here but a few hours what the hell learn some more country, theres alot of it in this area.

Man, i'm sure glad i didn't listen to you guys... Sure we had to put a few miles on bad trails to get to the halfway decent stuff, but once we got there, there was MANY places with real good snow. Sure it wasn't the waist deep fluff, but it was enough to get stuck in and riding in the trees was great. I got stuck plently, the sled is still straight, and i came home with only a few bumps and bruises. 2800 miles and 9 days later I'm home and the trip was a success. And wouldn't you know it, the day we left there was 5 inches of new snow in the village and i would be willing to bet the hills got a bunch more...

March 29, 2010 Update--Welcome back to WINTER. It has been snowing all morning and over 2" has
fallen on Sawtelle and over 3" on Black Bear--with much more to come. Winds are gusting to 30.

Dangerous areas of unstable snow still exist on cold, northerly slopes and on wind-loaded slopes--in some areas. Avalanche hazard will increase steadily the next two days due to the new snow and strong winds.

Current Conditions:
March 29, 2010 UPDATE--Winter has returned.
Up to 3" of new snow has fallen this A.M. and snow continues to fall with STRONG winds.

AVALANCHE hazard is MODERATE with
DANGEROUS conditions in some areas. New
snow and
winds will INCREASE hazard thru the
week
. Our western peaks remain "shaky" in
the steep chutes and bowls, especially on
shaded slopes.

Remember--"Pockets" exist with a higher
hazard than the general forecast rating.

Current Conditions:
March 30, 2010 UPDATE (8 AM)--Winter is back.

Up to 12" of snow has fallen above 8,000' in last 24 hrs. with over 1.0 inches of water content accompanied by STRONG winds gusting over 30 mph, and more snow will fall today with WIND.

Drove up to Island Park this afternoon to poke around a bit and find out what the big storm over the last couple days actually brought in.
Found 4 sledders just coming down off of Tow Tops/Jefferson and Black Bear.

They said the snow at the top is terrific, and Plentiful.

The winds brought some BIG DRIFTS to the Black Bear loop making it impassible to trail sleds, but OK for mountain sleds.

Tomorrow should fun!!

Just got back from what had to have been the BEST RIDE of the entire season for Island Park.

Pulled into the big springs warming hut parking lot this morning.
Place was completely empty with just a trace of fresh powder on the ground.

Hopped on the main trail en route to Black Bear.
Just one notch above ICE, as the groomer hasn't run since Mid-March.
Smoked the Hyfax a couple times when we forget to stop and get some snow on them.

Below 7,000ft or so, it was Ugly.
But.

As we started up the mountain thing got better, A LOT better, then Great, then just plain AWESOME.

The higher we climbed the better, the more, the deeper the snow became.

NO ONE had been on the trail in days.

Nothing but fresh untracked powder and hundreds and hundreds of drifts to bash!

By the time we got up to the top after breaking trail for the better part of an hour, we were in 1ft of fresh powder on a "HERO" base. You couldn't get stuck on this if you tried!

The whole top of the mountain was UN-TRACKED, WIDE OPEN, Absolutely the best I have seen all season. We rode till we were afraid we were going to run out of gas!

It was snowing lightly most of the day.
By mid afternoon it was snowing HARD AND STEADY!

We saw one group of 3 sledders from Drigs on the mountain the whole day.
Most people turned around and bailed because of the drifts.

Visibility was good, but the light was EXTREMELY FLAT.
Depth Perception was a bear.
