Island Park Snow Conditions

CHRISTOPHER how come you are always standing next to or behind your sled, is it always STUCK?

Cause I am STILL LEARNING!! :D

And right now I don't have a way to take a picture when I am on the thing.

For a full day's riding I think I had 3 significant stucks last weekend. This weekend I am heading up to Bishop Mountain just below Island Park, perhaps I will get "more" stuck on the backside there.

Christopher, if you get all the way up to the Ranger Tower I can guarantee you more Stucks! But have fun anyway!

Had a great ride with Doc Mark Capner and his brother up Jefferson and behind Jefferson on Tuesday.

There was one big avalanche on the back side. It happened in an area we had just rode through, we sat and talked for ten or twenty minutes and on our way back we came across the slide. The slide went to the ground!!

There is good riding up high.

Boys, be careful up high. We seen a small slide on Friday that could have been big. We stayed out of the areas that usually slide. I did several layer checks. The snow is good but I promise you.....IT WILL SLIDE!!

Current Conditions:
As of 6 AM Sunday, 1/10/10 we have received no
new snow in the last 24 hrs.

Avalanche danger is CONSIDERABLE
on all slopes, and wind-loaded slopes are especially fragile.

DANGEROUS avalanche conditions exist.
The current avalanche cycle is the most widespread event in 20 years.
We have 1-2' of "sugar" that is now covered with significant wind slabs (2--5' thick).

Stay off the "steeps" today and stay away from gullies and avalanche run-out zones!
Remember--there are always "pockets" of snow with a higher hazard than the general forecast rating.

where abouts was the slide. we havent gotten around a lot yet did the black canyon loop yesterday and did two tops today. didn't find too much snow. two tops looked the best out of what we saw. my sled isn't running right so we only got 50 miles on today.

thanks for the warnings we are watching out and being careful

It was between Keg Springs and Jefferson in the Hell Roaring area by an area called Blair Lake. It was on a Northeast facing slope. Several layers of good snow and then about 18" of facet. I heard two top was good. Montana side of the Centenials is decent too. Hope you guys have a good week.

Same here.
I was surprised at how little snow there was up there on top.
LOTS of stumps/downed trees/rocks just below the surface snow layer waiting to take out a sled.

Thought there would have been much more up top than we found in Black Canyon.

Surprisingly FEW riders on the trail as well.

Is it worth heading up to Island Park?
I'm from Northern Utah, we have a trip planned to Henry's this weekend but the above posts dont look too promising.
I havent been out this year due to lack of snow in Utah.
Are the stumps and rocks covered in the high country of IP?
I replaced the ENTIRE front end of my D8 last year... i dont want to have an encounter with a rock or stump and do it all over again.

Thanks for your comments.

We like the steep and deep.

On saturday I went out with 8 guys who are all locals.
Born and raised here in Rigby/Rexburg.
To the one, they all said that we were 3-4ft short from a normal year for mid January.

There IS snow up there.
But they all thought it was shallow by comparison.

Forcast is calling for a
40% chance of Snow on Tuesday
70% chance of Snow on Weds
30% chance of Snow on Thursday

Are guys still bending parts in IP?
Around here you have around a 70% chance of buying a new A-Arm if you get off the trail.
Thanks for the responses. Anyone have any other advice (cancel the trip or not...)?
