Well, we were hoping for more fresh snow before arriving, but at least there is plenty of snow to play on. We come Thursday for a week and are looking forward to it. Staying in West and rented from Backcounty Adventures again this year but am getting Polaris 650 146" this year since we will be doing more trail riding than normal. With current snow conditions, it sounds like that will be plenty of sled to get around on. Have a new couple that has never ridden so it'll interesting.

·Today (1/17) we skied above Hebgen Lake. Because of the recent avalanches on the buried surface hoar layer, we planned to avoid all avalanche terrain. We dug a pit (for forecasting purposes, not for decision making) and didn't get the unstable results we expected to see. We avoided steep slopes anyways.
If you're planning to stay out of avalanche terrain entirely, there is no need to dig a snowpit. Snowpack test results should only be used to push you towards more conservative choices and you've already decided to make the most conservative choice possible.
On the other hand, if you are planning to ride steep slopes - a snowpit can be a useful last check before dropping in and an unexpected result may provide a reason to back off.

·We rode into the Centennial Range today (1/17) hunting for the surface hoar layer. This weak layer's distribution is spotty, but surface hoar is not to be trusted. We recommend digging three feet deep to look for and test this layer before riding any steep terrain.

Heightened avalanche danger exists in the mountains near Big Sky through the Lionhead area and Cooke City. In the last four days, 7-10” of snow around West Yellowstone and Cooke City and 5” near Big Sky incrementally loaded a layer of weak surface hoar crystals buried 1-2 feet deep. Slides within the new and wind-drifted snow and large avalanches breaking on weak layers buried deeper in the snowpack are also possible. Dig, test and maintain a conservative mindset when selecting terrain due to persistent weak layers demonstrating a potential to fail and avalanche.
In the mountains around Bozeman, 3-6” of snow fell since the start of the weekend. Avalanches within the new and wind-drifted snow are possible. Deeper avalanches are less likely, but should be considered due to weak layers in the middle and at the bottom of the snowpack.
The danger is rated MODERATE.

Snowing in bozo now. Had about 6 inches the last few days bu need more! Forecast says 12-18 inches next two days. Fingers crossed lol! Love the snow ghost trees !
