Island Park Snow Conditions for 22-23 season.

So does anyone know what happened? Said he was with a group and got separated. No radios? No gps I guess( new instrument panel) sad that there was a very good chance of rescue but it didn’t happen. Should normal riders just have a stay in eye sight rule? In whitewater it’s a rule ? Two recent fatalities because of it. I dunno iam new and I could easy get stuck and left behind. Yikes

Radios are necessary for communication, impossible to stay in eyesight as everyone has a different skill level. Also, it only takes a blink of an eye and we lose sight of a buddy.

Yeah that’s what I mean. They lost sight now he’s dead. I don’t want my buddy’s to die really. Obviously the radio was not enough to save him if hmyhey had them. Could simply be another time when it was “just your time” I suppose but if it wasn’t then the system is to blame and maybe it was a bad idea . I think maybe everyday should be treated with a little more caution? Sad to me knowing he was probably less than 200 yards away dying …

They were careful NOT to release any real information on this incident yet. Till we have a better idea of what really happened it’s mighty hard to say what should have been done differently as we don’t know the true cause of death yet.

Yes, radios are pretty much a MUST have, but then so is a Personal Locator Beacon ( Satellite SOS) in my opinion. And of course being ready to spend the night alone on the mountain is always a must.

Christopher nailed it, satellite communication is a life saver. We always carry an in reach for emergency.
GPS is also a great tool.
Very unfortunate incident we all can learn from.

Just another reason I want to do that deep dive into the TrailTech Voyager Pro system. Want to find out what the real operational limits are on that Buddy Tracking system they and Polaris are using..

I agree with Christopher about the gps. I carry an inreach but it does me no good if iam un conscience or pinned under my sled or a million other scenarios. Being able to help another or in this case locate seems to be the worry. At least for me hearing this scenario. The rule in whitewater is if your not close enough to help you can’t help. Obviously a different environment but honestly it’s a lot alike. When you need help you kind of need it fast. You may not be able to fix what’s wrong sometimes but the thought of them just needing help then succumbing to the elements is horrifying really. Condolences to the families

Still plenty of good snow if you are just willing to spend a little time and effort to go hunting for it.

[5:45AM Sat 2/18/23] [emoji3063] .

After a cold and dry start to the day with wind chills as cold as -40°F, increasing clouds out of the north will mark the arrival of our next system bringing a return to snow and breezy winds throughout the afternoon and evening hours today. Snowfall rates could be heavy at times this evening especially east of I-15 approaching 1"/hr at times.

The storm today will be on the leading edge of atmospheric river moisture working in from the Pacific Ocean which will bring chances for snow and breezy to locally gusty winds every day through Wednesday. In the mountains, we could be looking at snow to the tune of another several feet. [emoji3587] Get ready for another windy and wet storm cycle moving in! #idwx
