Island Park Snow Conditions for 22-23 season.

I heard from a very reputable source that the guy that passed away was found just north of meadow creek lodge maybe near the first intersection. He got close to the wire fence and the sled tipped on him pinning him against the fence. Supposedly he was disoriented in the white out conditions

I heard from my buddy who helped pull him out of a creek that he was too close to the edge of the trail that had drifted over which caused him to fall into the creek and get pinned under his sled. Very unfortunate circumstances

Man terrible. But however it happened it’s the 2nd fatality caused by being trapped under the snowmobile . So I know I will be trying at least to be seen at most times and the industry should adopt the same in sight policy as whitewater. Wasn’t long ago that there was no avalanch training either so making excuses is just that.

Are you also counting and critiquing this years traffic accidents?

Accidents happen.

I am not for any requirements, training, government interference of any sort. If this is what you are advocating I think you may have the wrong audience.

no a rule between riders of your group. Would you ride with a guy with no helmet and the wrong clothes?. Go into avalanch terrain with no transceiver or shovel? Same kinda thing. That’s two guys in a month. This poor man was left to freeze to death . That’s a terrible way to go. A bad death. Like drowning because you had no life jacket. You know what iam saying ? John Wayne **** has no place in real whitewater. It’s a group success and your life is only as good as your partners and vis versa? So like now guys wear transceivers they could adopt those kinda things under circumstances or with riders or allways if they want. Just sad to me cause everyone has family left behind.

I’ve never met the guys that say every man for himself, hope you get home tonight.
I’m quite certain his group was concerned and trying to locate him.

No offense PC, but to me what you’re saying is we need to educate everyone on how to breathe. We all want to, we all try to, we all instinctively and naturally do, we all at some point will not.

Everyone I’ve ever sledded with constantly count heads. Heads still disappear quickly. Many times I’ve even helped other groups regroup and vise versa.

You are simply focused on the wrong aspect of this accident.

Please have some respect for the families of these men that are already over blaming themselves because of an accident that no one foresaw, no one really knows, no one can change what happened.

I am being respectful. Iam asking others if it may be a good idea is all and iam shocked others are saying anything other than yes that’s a good idea. I lost a dear dear friend last year kayaking and I know about these risks. Some are worth while others are not. I do not blame his riding partners I feel terrible for them but others may be spared the same fate if they adopt different practices. All I was saying. Snowmobilers are fun loving do it yourself need no help kinda group. Never hear them complain. It’s only because iam learning and watching that I mention it. I rode alone a few times too before I knew it was t ok and realized things happen fast. If this happened to me I’d hope my friend ms and family would try and push the”eyes on” thing to everyone. “Eyes on” is a thing from river rescue not me being trying to be special. Just means watch intently. Sorry you thought I was disrespectful was not my intent. And to your point nothing would change things that’s false. Once there where no helmets no tethers list goes on and on . It’s only under duress that bad things usually happens. That’s just analytics and no opinion stuff. Sorry it was insensitive but I thought a lesson from whitewater might be useful here too.

No one is saying you’re advocating something unnecessary.

I’m trying to say majority of sledders already do what you’re trying to advocate for and the disrespect I mention comes from the assumption that inattention was even a real factor.
You don’t know that.

At his age it could have been a health episode that put him there.
Many other factors as well you and I simply cannot speak for.

Please don’t take any of this as confrontational PC, I’m just trying to portray that jumping on and assuming anyone could have stopped this is not ours to determine.

I ride primarily with kids and beginners by choice because I Love teaching people to ride. I’ve lived my glory days of riding and now I want to help those younger than me….

We push and push and go into areas most won’t but it’s because everyone I ride with follows basic safety rules and watches out for each other.
This is a common thread I’ve found in almost all groups.

I got ya. I won’t argue I know you have decades on this world and I have none. I’ve been backcountry skiing for a long time so some lessons are shared but the others are different. I just feel bad . Unfortunately we accept this as an outcome of the sport of backcountry snowmobiling and we will see more fatalities. My dad was a Air Force pilot and a pilot trainer. He used to say you can’t allways beat the odds but you can allways lesson them. I for one will ask for help and hey man can you watch me on this one cause iam quit possibly the worst fall off down hill of my snowmobile guy ever. Thanks for helping me understand your point!

Has it snowed much since Sat?
I had to head home that night as it started….
Daughters begging to go back tomorrow.

Snow forecasts just keep getting better and better.
Snowchasers just put this out.

By Tuesday night they are calling for....
