Island Park Snow conditions 07/08

Spent 9 days there

Awesome snow down low & up on top esp towards Black Canyon and along YP boundary. Bottomless last weekend but setup through out the week. Snow was not as good in Sawtell area - missed Jefferson (my group was weak)

Snowing like crazy when we left Sunday. Should be prime now. 100 times better than last February.

Heard stories of cops on sleds radaring busy areas like Big Springs and around the IP loop. Esp on weekends. I didn't see any though.

My buddy did get pulled over because he drove like 100 feet on a "plowed" road to get into IPV Resort from the gas station. The road was more like powed but whatever-the cop was in a car and let him go with a FYI warning.

PS How where the races in West? We lleft since it was snowing like crazy & we where whooped.

Been riding IP since my first SnoJet and have never seen a cop anywhere other than the Flag Ranch POS Trail. What is the speed limit anyway?:face-icon-small-win

GMCRMK, I'm surprised to hear he got pulled over there? I think I know the place you're talking about, and you don't really have too many options there from what I remember?

From what I've heard, from the locals "new this year" if you get pulled over on the road and have a specific place to go, they won't ticket you. Just tell them your going to get gas or what ever. If you're just road riding they will ticket you. Just what I've heard.

Speed limit

They have new blue 45 MPH Speed limit signs posted in many spots. I don't recall ever seeing them before (I've been riding there 10 years) but maybe I just never noticed because I was going too fast

I hear about all this awesome snow to the north of IP. How is the snow south? Mesa Falls? Ashton? ETC.

Warm river falls to Mesa is PERFECT. We did enough meadow bashing to last a lifetime. Green Canyon was nice too. Don't know about Ashton but looked ok.

montana sticker

Speaking of cops. Do you guys who have Idaho stickers also get a Montana sticker for times you may pop into the Montana side of the IP trails? Has anyone with a valid Idaho sticker been ticketed on say the Black Canyon trail because they didn't have a Montana sticker? I'm not talking about riding into West or anything, just the stuff easily accessed from IP.

I would have been, except when I was about a mile from where the Idaho side turns to Montana a few guys coming back flagged us down and told us not to go any further because the cops were waiting right past the border in the trees. They said they were given the choice to go into West and buy a Montana permit, or get the ticket. They chose the permit, but what a load of crap. Many thanks to those fellas if they ever read this.

montana stickers in IP?

Thanks for the info. Does anyone in IP sell Montana stickers or do have to drive into West just to get a sticker and drive back to IP?

$$$$$$$$$

FYI,

It cost $127.00 for Idaho & Montana regs for two sleds.

I need to go back to to improve my return on investment :face-icon-small-ton

I guess i have been poor way to long , do the smokey's like to boondock through the tree's? I hope they ride a 162 !:beer;

Makes me think about the sand when you talk like that . Tell me i need a gay flag and sticker on my scooter , they can write the ticket after we get to the end of the whoop road . Never had to pay yet , that stuff must not be for locals .

They hate boondocking, in fact they hate any amount of work and thanks to guys like you and guys that poach closed areas there's talk (more serious with every example of lawlessness that they want to manage) of going to a system which requires a tracking device on sleds, you'll have to have it to start your sled and they'll know where that sled is at all times. It will be extremely invasive and make the annual stickers seem cheap. Thanks in advance for being a catalyst that made more rules for all of us.

I don't like the increasing fees and management either but it all stems from trying to get people to play by the rules and they spare no expense using our money to do it.

We just got back from riding this last weekend....snow was great.

that will never happen... and if it does, there will be all sorts of electronics out the next day to fool the system... its the equivalent of putting a breathalizer on every new car... never going to happen. Dont be fooled by the greenies lies...

playing by the rules, like putting a 35 mph speed limit on a snowmobile trail? lol yea lets shut down sledding because they are speeding on the trails
