If you're just getting into dirt bikes, Look for a cheap older honda XR, i have an 84 XR 350 that is my backup (crf450x primary) and they are great....
Even a 200 or 250 will do to get started, pretty much bullitt-proof as long as you check the oil!
I forget how big your boy is, but, a great started bike for a kid is something
with an auto-clutch, like a Yamaha ttr-90, also bullitproof....
I have seen XR's as low as $700 to $1200 on craigslist....
Check with Corey, he can probably find you what you need....
Barry
ps: if you get something or want to try out an XR 350, get with slim and
go borrow mine.
Keep your eyes peeled on Craigslist, and whatever other sources you can find.mostly trail riding with the kid. i don't want to spend much more than 2k.
I saw that too, but it said something was wrong with the E-start. You had to push start it. Probablly just a battery or something!![]()
If you do end up picking up a xr let me know as I have an edelbrock quick silver carb I would just about give away for a 350 400![]()
thanks guys! thanks tech A....I will definitely have Corey go through it when that happens. I trust him....he has always done a good job for me. Even though it took him a forever to get my tunnel on! haha its all good.
I went and picked up that 85 XR 350 for 500 bucks from a college grad that was leaving and had to get rid of it.
Ya I would definitely be interested in that carb A.J!!!!! thanks!
XR-350's were a great bike! I'm actually going to pick up an 85' here in the next few days. Run good oil through them with regular changes, they had issues if someone were to run them low on oil, they would stick the camshaft bearing and break the cam chain, but again, if she has oil, that bike will run forever!
I don't think that Edelbrock carb will fit the 350's though, the 350's, 500's, and 600's had a dual carb setup on those years, a smaller carb with a large secondary with progressive linkage.
Check out Al Baker's XR's Only, they make cam's, big bores, exhaust's, skidplates, about everything for those years.
This one has a special boot to do away with the duel carbs and go to one single. It also has an accelerator pump so there is no bog when you go full throttle great carbs for the xr![]()

Couldn't go wrong for 500 clams....If you decide to upgrade you will get at least that back out of it. We'll have to hook up when I'm done working
here in Wa, I've got a lot of trails I can show ya!![]()
anyone know where to get decent bike ramp for the pickup? I lost out on one on ebay today....cacksucker got me in the last 20 seconds.![]()
Really?! The boot was from Edelbrock? I have an 85' XR 500 that is getting tweaked, 600 top end, xl 650 crank, should end up being like a 690 when done with just stupid torque numbers!Anyways, I'll have to look into one of those carb setups, sounds like the hot ticket for tuning consistancy.
2x6 with a little piece of metal to hook/rest on the tail gate.
