Inexpensive good used dirt bikes

If you're just getting into dirt bikes, Look for a cheap older honda XR, i have an 84 XR 350 that is my backup (crf450x primary) and they are great....
Even a 200 or 250 will do to get started, pretty much bullitt-proof as long as you check the oil!
I forget how big your boy is, but, a great started bike for a kid is something
with an auto-clutch, like a Yamaha ttr-90, also bullitproof....
I have seen XR's as low as $700 to $1200 on craigslist....
Check with Corey, he can probably find you what you need....

Barry

ps: if you get something or want to try out an XR 350, get with slim and
go borrow mine.

this one something like yours?

Yeah, it's 1 year newer which had a better carb set-up and a little more power. the top-end noise is normal for one of those, mine did it for 8 years before the timing chain went, Corey fixed it, valves, piston, etc for about
$500.00, now it is like new again.
I also have a ttr125 I just bought for my niece, your son can try it out for size...Get with slim, I've got 10 acres you and you son can zip around on
to get a quick idea....I've also got a CRF230 (Ethan's) there too...

I have only had the bike a few weeks and i have wrecked probubly 20 times. As you can tell i now need new plastics, i kind of pop the clutch a bit hard when climbing realy steep hills. Ohh well! Its just plastic :D

mostly trail riding with the kid. i don't want to spend much more than 2k.
Keep your eyes peeled on Craigslist, and whatever other sources you can find.

I picked up my 05 KTM 450 MXC for $2850 around the first of march. Love it so far. Had a litte issue with jetting cause it came from 700 Ft of elevation and I'm riding it at 7000 ft plus now so it's gonna take a touch of tuning. but other than that I love it.

There's a lot of people around with toys for sale with the rough economic times so keep your eyes peeled and have $$ in hand and don't be afraid to low ball them a little.

I saw that too, but it said something was wrong with the E-start. You had to push start it. Probablly just a battery or something! :D

ya, thats what i figured to. still if ya had to put a couple hundy into it you could still probably come out on top.

to the OP. if your gonna be doin any kind of technical or tight trails i'd probably steer clear of the mx style 4 strokes. we all ride mx 4 strokes and do alot of tight trails and its a work out cuz they dont lug very well, basically go or no go and lots of clutch work. if i could buy a new bike i'd probably go for somethin like a wr, xr/crfx, klx type bike cuz they are not quite as cammed up as the mx bikes. but i also ride the dunes quite often and the mx 450s are a blast in the sand so either way there would be comprimise for me.

oh and for the 4 strokes being a biotch to start hot, if your jetted right you shouldn't have any issues. my bike starts up around two kicks no matter what, if i stall it or wreck when its hot pop the hotstart and one or two kicks and she fires right up again.

If you do end up picking up a xr let me know as I have an edelbrock quick silver carb I would just about give away for a 350 400 :beer;

thanks guys! thanks tech A....I will definitely have Corey go through it when that happens. I trust him....he has always done a good job for me. Even though it took him a forever to get my tunnel on! haha its all good. :D

I went and picked up that 85 XR 350 for 500 bucks from a college grad that was leaving and had to get rid of it.

Ya I would definitely be interested in that carb A.J!!!!! thanks!

XR-350's were a great bike! I'm actually going to pick up an 85' here in the next few days. Run good oil through them with regular changes, they had issues if someone were to run them low on oil, they would stick the camshaft bearing and break the cam chain, but again, if she has oil, that bike will run forever!

I don't think that Edelbrock carb will fit the 350's though, the 350's, 500's, and 600's had a dual carb setup on those years, a smaller carb with a large secondary with progressive linkage.

Check out Al Baker's XR's Only, they make cam's, big bores, exhaust's, skidplates, about everything for those years.

This one has a special boot to do away with the duel carbs and go to one single. It also has an accelerator pump so there is no bog when you go full throttle great carbs for the xr :D

Couldn't go wrong for 500 clams....If you decide to upgrade you will get at least that back out of it. We'll have to hook up when I'm done working
here in Wa, I've got a lot of trails I can show ya!:beer;

Really?! The boot was from Edelbrock? I have an 85' XR 500 that is getting tweaked, 600 top end, xl 650 crank, should end up being like a 690 when done with just stupid torque numbers!:eek: Anyways, I'll have to look into one of those carb setups, sounds like the hot ticket for tuning consistancy.

That I'm not sure It was purchased threw white brothers It was an edelbrock quicksilver II pumper for an xr 400/350. I had one on my xr600 too and it was great unreal throttle response way better than the stock carb :beer;
