Inexpensive good used dirt bikes

I've never rode one, but every thread I've ever read has been nothing but good. People that own them, seem to think there the best bike ever built. I wanted a 4 stroke, so I went with the KTM450sx. That bike flat out rips when you crack the throttle. Great in the dunes, and track, but I'm not too sure how good it would be with only the 4 gears. I wouldn't trade it for any other bike right now.

Just make sure you get the E-start. It's worth it's weight in gold IMO! You'll know what I mean after the 1st time you lay it down. At least with a 4 stroke.

thanks....that is some good input! :beer;

hell I wish I had e-start on my 125.

If you do get the button, battery size is something to look at. Some guys say smaller for weight, but others go and get bigger for more cranking power or longer lasting. Which is nice if say you are mud riding and stalling, etc. Or just tired.

Why do you need an e-start? Mine starts on the 3rd kick after sitting for a week and after that it starts with half a kick.... Don't see how adding 5-10 pounds could be worth it???

You guys must be old! :p:p:beer;

Mine came with both batteries. I've only used the big one so far, but I take the other one with me in case it dies.

They all start up easy when there cold, it's after they get hot when they don't start. Remember A1 when Bubba couldn't get his started after he went down. If he would have had the button, he would have finished, and we wouldn't have had such a close Supercross series this year. :D

Also, the KTM is lighter than all the other 450 bikes except the Honda.

M-P-S ... lots of good recommendations on here. If you're dead set on the 4-stroke, a WR or CRF both work well; a KTM RFS works even better though ;) I'm biased but it's tough to beat a 300EXC for off-road/single track/hill climbs ... it's a 3-stroke; best of both worlds. Easy to maintain and can be had for a reasonable price if you search for the deal. Happy hunting.

If you're just getting into dirt bikes, Look for a cheap older honda XR, i have an 84 XR 350 that is my backup (crf450x primary) and they are great....
Even a 200 or 250 will do to get started, pretty much bullitt-proof as long as you check the oil!
I forget how big your boy is, but, a great started bike for a kid is something
with an auto-clutch, like a Yamaha ttr-90, also bullitproof....
I have seen XR's as low as $700 to $1200 on craigslist....
Check with Corey, he can probably find you what you need....

Barry

ps: if you get something or want to try out an XR 350, get with slim and
go borrow mine.

My 300 always starts on the first kick, even when i lay it over for a few.... or trailer it. Only time it ever takes more than 1-2 kicks is when the fuel was shut off and it was stored for a week or so... Then again i ride it around my house almost every day when im not work'n or sled'n so idk? I have it jetted perfect, i know that.

I can't really comment on the 300's, because I never had a problem with any of my 2strokes I've ever had. I had an 06 KTM 450sx without the E-start, and that's the only reason I don't still have that bike. If I stalled it even, It would take 15-20 kicks to get it running again. I flipped this one over in the sand, picked it back up, pushed the button, and was off again. Sooooooo much easier.

If you want to go ultra cheap look at some of the older xr600 Honda's there great bikes but a bit heavy. I picked mine up for 700 bucks got new plastic and a desert tank ,pipe and so on was in it for less than 1300. tons of torque great on the trails and could run just about any top speed you wanted In the open.

chit I think this thread is talking me into a KTM for my next bike.

better ride the 200 and the 144 just to be sure...now to find willing donors.

there was a 07 ktm 450sxf on ksl yesterday for $3000, i'm not much of a ktm fan but it looked like pretty good deal.

thanks rockymking....some really good input there too! that is a nice looking bike!

id wait a few months and wait for the 2010's to come out then go to a dealer and find a left over 08 or 09 and pay 1500 bucks more than a used ( who knows how bad they trashed it) bike. just my 2 cents

Go ride one, then you'll be convinced. That was the mistake I made! A little more expensive, but there worth it. :beer;:D

I have, well the 200. "borrowed" my father-in-laws a few times and I may again next time we ride.

I love my YZ, but I really want a bit more bottom hit...as much fun as it is, I do get tired of constantly keeping the Rs high and being on the pipe.
