Totally agree..........I won't do the bibs, guess my TOBE pants are going to have to hold out a little longer! :D

I know a lot of people are concerned with moisture and such but what is the best fabric for warmth and stopping the wind? Just seems the new eVent stuff is more for warmer temps and just releasing sweat.

I'm looking to buy some new stuff this year and I'm torn between all of it.
Anything with WINDSTOPPER or wind shear. Both are amazing, i have a couple jackets from cabelas with wind shear in them and they awesome, i work outside all the time and about all i wear in the winter is an uninsulated windshear jacket and a goose down vest and i stay warm pretty much all the time. I also have a pair of light weight gloves that have the windstopper material in them that i snowmobile with and as long as my handle bar heaters are on then i dont ever wear anything but those. And they dont ever seem to get wet and clammy feeling, like when you take them off and they are hard to get back on. I love em and if i remember right i got them from a bicycle supply store onling.

Mountain Hardwear has a new membrane they are using that is uber breathable. Gonna try one of their shells over some new armor that I am going to wear. I am concerned about over heating. This new stuff they are using is 40,000 water proof and 40,000 breathable! I have never even heard of anything over 30,000. It is also supposed to breath immediately where Gore Tex and Event and the rest have to "heat up" a bit before they start to pass the water vapor through. Or it's all BS and the marketers have sold me a line of bull. I have had really good luck with Mt Hardwear ski gear though.

Nope. They are making their own, price is significantly lower because they are NOT paying a license fee to Gore or anyone else.

Mountain hard wear Dry Q. Is event.

Only event can breathe at the levels you put down. 40000mm. Usually at a minimum event is 2x it's closest competitor in breathability. Dry Q is event and does allow them to get around some licensing. EVent has a powerful name. I don't know why you wouldn't want to use it. Oh well...

If it doesn't say event/Dry Q....it is 2x less the product. It just is. Easy to waterproof. Hard to get something to breathe. And at 2x the rate of anything. I will take a MotorFist eVent jacket. Over.

Companies Now Able to Brand GE's eVent Fabrics as Their Own
Tuesday, 16 November 2010

GE has announced that its eVent fabrics will now be available for customers to brand as their own. The change puts the customer’s label on the outside with eVent technology on the inside. For entrepreneurial brands, this offers a new design freedom.

Mountain Hardwear has chosen to partner with GE for the launch of its proprietary collection of Dry Q waterproof-breathable apparel, debuting for Fall 2011, because of the proven performance of GE’s membrane technology and the flexibility it brings to the internal design process.
As part of this strategy, GE now will supply a full range of ePTFE membranes to customers in the outdoor, snowsports and cycling industries for their own branded uses in a wide variety of applications. The entire collection of GE membrane and laminate technologies and new examples of eVent fabrics outerwear, gear and footwear will be on display at the Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2011 show.

This WAS what Polaris was using. MotorFist now has the exclusive rights for eVent in the Snowmobile market and Polaris lost it.

If I am wrong, I am wrong. I went to the eVent site and it said that eVent is owned by BHA(or something close) Holdings. The guy at the Mountain Hardwear factory store in Seattle told me that DryQ was a GE built product that was modified by Mountain Hardware to up it's durability. I bought an eVent jacket for hiking in Seattle because I run hot and sweat like 2 pigs. I thought it sucked. It leaked rain from the outside and didn't vent very well at all. I have had the best luck with Helly Hansen stuff. I have a soft and hard shell from them and I don't even wear the hard shell because the soft shell is so waterproof and it breathes better than any coat I have ever had. You guys will prolly tell me that Helly is eVent too! lol. One of the things that attracted me to the DryQ is the fact that they do all their testing after 50 washings. 50! Most waterproof membranes suffer when they are washed even a couple of times.

One other comment. I have found that sport specific gear works better for it's intended purpose. My ski gear has not worked very well for snowmobiling. My Klim jacket and pants have worked very well. The jacket has been nearly 100% waterproof while sledding and my Klim pants have been 100% waterproof. Some days there is slushy snow on my seat all day and I have never had a wet az while wearing my Klim pants. My Klim gear is Gore Tex Pro Shell and I have been very happy with it. I wear Helly for skiing and love it too. I usually have to run the vents wide open on my jacket and pants though to keep the sweat from getting me wet. Base layers are key too, I use Helly for both skiing and sledding.

Interesting thought. I was actually thinking of going in the opposite direction. After my Klim stuff is wore out I was leaning towards trying out some ski/climbing/snowboarding stuff. I guess my logic on that is that I am pretty active when sledding and it would be nice to be able to try some stuff that is geared towards an active style of riding. Don't get me wrong...my Klim stuff works great, but it can seem just a tad bulky at times. I am probably splitting hairs though. I guess if I am being honest it would also be nice to look just a little different from the Klim and Motorfist Army that swarms the hills every weekend. We have some pretty good resources where I live to buy some of the gear I am talking about, I just need my other stuff to wear out so I can justify the cost of the new gear. Looking at some of the vids that are out lately it looks like guys like Dan Treadway are doing the same thing? Then again, I am probably over thinking the whole thing because I am getting pretty anxious to get out and go.

so what about reima? had a set of reima clothes, the jacket was awesome, a little heavy with the padding, and the bibs had articulated knees. i loved the crap out of that. does klim have anything of the sort?

After several Klim products failed during their first season..and failed again when I tried to warranty them...I switched to HMK.

Tore a pair of HMK pants along the seam the first month...new pants at my door no questions asked before the end of the week. Thats customer service I expect when paying top dollar. Stayed warm and toasty all season. Klim seemed a bit too tailored in their fit. While the HMK fits nicely but still allows for aggressive movement while riding.

Going all HMK this year...going to be great winter!

Been very happy with Klim's gear and never had to send any of their stuff back. Costs more than the others, but you do get what you pay for. The Tog bibs and Valdez coat went 5 years without failure, but starting to show their age now. I've never had gear that has put up with that much abuse and lasted half as long. This year I bought the extreme bibs cause I know they'll keep me 100% dry in the worst conditions. Went for a bargain on a "fashionable" slednecks coat though. Seems like a pretty well built coat, but I can tell it doesn't compare to Klim. It is an XL though and my old worn Valdez is a Large, so I can always wear the Klim under it if I have to! lol
