Let me start out by saying in the most humble way that I am not a particularly good rider, but my friend Spomey is. No, he is not the type to to do the 1000 ft drops or the back flips, but it has been a very long time since I have seen him miss a line. Simply put his sled goes where he wants it to...period.

This weekend we came across two individuals who sat stuck on the side of the road. Spomey, having the heart of gold and the strength of six mules decided to stop and help. It was not long before he lifted the sled onto the road inspite of these particular individual's...how should I say...confusion? And I do not want to get into the discussion of flatlander vs. mountain rider or enter into the fray of who has the baddest sled on the mountain...But lets just say the equipment was good. Supercharged and turbocharged good.

It turns out they were visitors and wanted someone as a guide. Spomey asked, "can you ride?" Now, it is not like spomey to talk smack. He was simply trying to ascertain if they had experience. Because if they did not, they would not have a good time following us. It is as simple as that.

Well, the guy sniffs through his nose and spits into the snow, takes a long drag on the cigarette from the corner of his mouth, puffs out his chest and cocks his head to one side and says, "that sled has 220 hp, it can go anywhere I point it, I ride Cooke City and I can ride with anyone." Holy pazolies I thought to myself. And I don't know about you, but at the age of 42, I have had my azz handed to me several times and I can now say my approach is a bit more humble. This guy was old enough to know better.

What happened next is probably the most extensive snowmobile clinic I have ever seen. It was only 15 minutes into the ride when, as the two where wallowing below us after we had popped back onto a road and I ask, "are you doing this on purpose?" Spomey's answer was, "hell yes, mr. puffy chest I can ride with anyone, I am going to school these amateurs."

Was the terrain tough? well, not really, but I can say when there was a choice between the "C" line and the "A" line, we took the "A+" line and watched the show. Towards the end of the day Spomey ask me how I thought they were doing? I said I think one guys eyes don't line up with the holes in the skull anymore and the other's look like two piss holes in the snow. Good Spomey said, and dropped off into a canyon to put the dairy queen swirl and cherry on top.

A few minutes from the truck one of the gentlemen, just ran off the road. He said that he was too tired to sit on his sled. Earlier in the day there was mention of exchanging phone numbers to ride another day. When we got to the lot they loaded and skulked off.

I am not sure there is a moral to the story..but from now on I am keeping my mouth shut...

Gosh, I hope they enjoyed the ride....

the most elloquently placed verbage i have ever read on this site. i think you missed your calling, you should offer your talent up to some major publications for a point of view perspective. story funny as hell, and well written. thanks.

Wow, next time you see him in your rear view mirror. Tell him I said thanks for making us flatlanders look even worse..... :face-icon-small-con

...sniff in through my nose and spit on the snow....This story is alright. :) That's a funny one! I could see where it was going. How many stucks through the day? And you must be a decent rider to go wherever your buddy goes.

Let me tell you pernikm lies, what a crock of bull.

He is a fantastic rider and while I lead most of the time he takes the harder line behind me as I take the most natural line looking for the next place to go or a path through the trees. He has to make harder turns and tighter lines to enjoy the untracked stuff. I really need to start leaving more perfect lines.

As for myself, I really enjoy riding, that's all I really care about.

And the part about "schooling the armatures" well that was a bit of creative license, I remember pernikm asking are you doing this on purpose? My answer was "hell yes! Mr. 220 Hp kind of got under my skin"

As for one of them being cocky yes that was true. The other guy was actually a really nice.

I really do ride with everyone, look at my posts about some rides I go on. But damn you know the guy, kind of too puffy chested and arrogant. and when he bragged about his 220 hp supercharged go anywhere ride with anybody sled.....well I wasn’t really worried about him following my stock M7 with my 250 lb fat a$$ onboard.

I took off riding the way I like to ride. The snow was PERFECT about 12-15 inches of powder on top of really good base. Totally fun, nearly bulletproof snow. I was in my glory and having one of the best rides of my life. These poor guys just kindof got caught up in it......I did notice another thing and that was the leave your buddy to get unstuck by himself attitude, or let Pernikm and myself go help while I sit. That kindof chapped me a bit also.

As for dropping into the last canyon well I wasn’t ready for the day to end, you know the pristine untracked snow in front of you and gas still in the tank. I knew they were hurting but I went in for me and pernikm.

Needless to say when we hit the road we have several "short cuts" that are just more fun for us than be-bopping down the road. They wanted no part of anything other than fresh groomed trail.....

I really do hope they enjoyed the ride. Rehashing the events of the day with Pernikm makes it extra special.:beer;:):beer;

Awesome story! :beer;

I think its true that some of the best riders out there are the ones you never hear about because they are just humble guys that love sledding. Ive had the pleasure of riding with quite a few guys like this. Some even ride old iron that you would never think would keep up with the new stuff. They sure make it work though. Just goes to show.......you can never tell.

That was a beautiful story! Very well written too! You do have a calling...and thanks to you and Spomey for dishing out a lesson in humility! LMFAO

You guys sound fun to ride with. Out to enjoy the snow with nothing to prove to anybody.

Sounds like the showboat's ship sank.....:face-icon-small-ton

awsome read, that was well written and VERY funny.

i learned pretty quick, dont talk about how good you are if your going ot have to ride with them, you can get suprised REALLY quick. all in all, i think we know the type... ride humble and have fun!!!

I honestly think that is a big problem now days. New people to the sport go get a 220 hp sled and brag about what they can do. They can not do squat their sled does all the work. When it comes time for them to ride they can not do it. Some can put a stock 700 in the same places others put a modded 1000. Those are the guys I like to watch.

I think when you can put a sled in places the sled should not be then it is time to upgrade.

Just my .02

I have shared this a couple times, but I think it fits here again. A few weekends back were towing my brothers 97? 670 Skidoo out a drainage. We were at least 5 miles back in when he disinegrated his clutch on a rock. So we are riding down this drainage with me in the lead when we come onto 2 guys. 1 50 something on a 08 xp and a 20 something on a Turbo Nytro. We came up on them and the kid on the Nytro was stuck going downhill. So we offered to help and the xp guy just looked at us like WTF?. So Nytro kid gets going and is having a rough time of it going downhill mostly because he couldn't sidehill. I just couldn't believe it. My brother that was being towed out was outriding this kid. When we got out on the flat we tried to talk to them again and again we got the WTF? look. I guess cause we rode old stuff we are like the plague.

I think some people think because the can drop 10 to 20 grand that make them hella good riders. Not so.
