How's Tampico?

sorry for the late reply Spyder, haven't been on in a while. Thanks alot for the invite, I'd love to tag along one of these days. Me and my buddy aren't pros by any means but we get along all right. Always nice to meet new people. I'll give a shout next time we head up.

Went up again today and managed to find some pretty good snow. The groomer has been busy up there it looks like and we put down the first tracks:face-icon-small-hap. The bowls were hammered but the snow up in the trees and slopes to the left of tree phones ( not sure what those areas are called up in there) was pretty good. altogether a pretty good blue sky day.

Sopprised it wasn't snowing up there. It snowed from about 9-12:30 at my house off the end of Slavin.Anyways, anyone up for a friday ride?Say meet at the snowpark about 9:00....

Went up today. Drizzle rain at snow park, slight clearing up above, then freezing fog, then snow. A little bit of everything. Grooming was not to bad considering how it has been. A few of the pics below. Another awesome day. YYEEESSS!!!!!

Tampico update

Saturday I went to the Snowmobile Advisory Committee meeting in Cle Elum. This group advises state parks on how to distribute the funds for the grooming and plowing (the main meeting is in July for the upcoming year). It looks like there will again be cuts for the next grooming and plowing season (we may have some carry-over from this years low snow season). There is a limit to how much annual cutbacks our groomer operators can accept before they start rejecting bids. A couple of other points from the meeting:

-Registering your sleds raises funds for our sport in two ways; 1) The base amount for the registration, and 2) The amount of gas tax that is proportioned. If you don't register your sled, our dedicated grooming/plowing account does not get that gas tax percentage. Bottom line, we need registered sleds to fund our programs.

-We need to be looking for a slight fee increase for our sport. I know of no other activity that has a constant or declining cost structure to participate. I personally think we pay to little for what we do; especially compared to our machine, clothing, transportation and fuel costs. If the fee could be implemented correctly (across State Parks, DNR, County, etc) at a decent rate, all of our current DNR accessibility problems would probably go away. A lot of active snowmobilers are looking at the fairest way to get this accomplished, and are putting a load of personal time and effort into this.

-DNR / Ahtanum issues- The DNR is looking for ways to mitigate some of the fundraising costs for the next season. They still have major funding problems (our problem has now hit western Washington), and will have for the near term future. I envision with no great certainty that our fundraising efforts will continue for the next season in order to continue to keep the Ahtanum and other DNR areas open.

-Ahtanum conditions Sunday (yesterday) were decent, I only took a short ride up Jackass. The trail was groomed and in good shape, with about 6-10" of new snow up high (6000' near the ewe neck area) since last week. Snow park conditions continue to stay warmer than normal, continually in the low 30's. Any one else that rode yesterday, please post the conditions. The groomer did give me an updated schedule late last week, I do not have it with me at this time, but will hopefully post it later today.

-GROOMING EVALUATION FORM- Has anyone filled out the forms from the link that I posted 01/27/2010 on this thread? Please do this; this gives state parks an accurate, written indication of how our trails are. They must have these for end of the year analysis. Make sure they are concise and accurate, pro or con. Just venting on the sno-west forum is not going to have positive effects on our local grooming program.

Have a good week,
Tampico

Made a run up today and man we need more snow. you could find good snow if you looked hard but most spots have been beat to death. some of the trails weren't bad as the groomer had been up recently.
