Hatcher Pass (willow/palmer)

ended up riding the Willow side today. rode with akhunter75.

CLEAR sky's, cold, and needs another foot (or two!) and it will be well worth it in some places! :D imo.

what a day to forget the camera too

but, id rather ride on a day like that, then spend a day in town! :)

I was suppose to ride Pville today but didn't make it. Tomorrow I was thinking of taking a quick trip to Hatchers just to get some riding in this weekend. When you say cold, was it really cold?

dont know the exact temp but, it was -15 to 0 through the whole day up there. probably colder in some places, not sure.

man I would ride it tomorrow but all my buds wimped this weekend....is there any good snow left up there?

I was up there last week and it was good wasn't fantastic but climb some hills. We will be up there about 12:30 - 1:00. You shouldn't need your buds to ride...LOL

lol...is much safer to ride with someone ...isnt very wise to ride alone..although I have.

have ridden in and out from my cabin quite a few times but is always a last resort...and being 50 miles north of eureka...isnt something I recommend..but was needed at the time...

hey hockey, how do you like your rev? my buddies all ride them..but I still can't get comfy on them...came off the edge chassis and even this dragon has taken some miles to get used too...but nothing like the feeling I get on the revs..just feel like the machine has a mind of its own ...

The super bowl is at the top or head of Purches Creek. If you keep going North and over the next Pass you get to Peters Creek.

I drop off the top of Lane and end up at the top of Peters Creek. Had a hard time finding the right pass to get to the Superbowl. 36 miles from Mother Load up Archangel and back thru Dogsled and return to Mother Load. Went solo what a day to be ALIVE!!!!

Hey RMKincaid. I think we met at Hatchers lower parking lot last Saturday (2/2) we where the last two or three trailers loading up. I believe you had the big dragon, sticker stripped, aircraft landing gear for skis, and some SLP air flow screens on it. We didn't talk much, but you mentioned that it wasn't pipe modded and still stock under the hood. That you?

Anyway, How do you like your sled? Your signature says the verdicts still out. "02 Vert Edge few inches narrowed several inches shorter Only ridden on Sundays. Dragon 8hun verdicts still out.". It sounds like you trust the dependability of it by the ride you went on. Have you done any long powder pushing trips with it yet (i.e. Alaska range, or west Denali type stuff). I have lived in Alaska all my life, and it looks like we finally have sleds in this world that can take me back to high country places I could only dream about. So, I'm getting ready to make a big investment to follow those dreams and would value your comments on that model.

If you decide to comment back on your new sled, please send me a PM or post in SnoWest Forum>SnowTalk>Sled Forums> ….. That way we help keep the AK ride area posts organized. Looking forward to hearing from you. Cheers.

hey flinger, how are you? hey I ride an 08 dragon 8 too..I have a trapping cabin at the head waters of the little O. about 50 miles from the road.absolutely love my 8...goes as good as anything on the snow and so far totally reliable..put in a carls clutch kit, geared it down to 19/42 ,resealed the headlght, and added some slp vents..800 miles still on original belt, had the ftr track shock pressure raised, and replaced the left hand heater...thats it been a gas and go otherwise...wouldn't hesitate to reccomend it for the back country...mike

Hey Rider- Thanks for your reply, and I'm doing great for just sitting on my butt all day at home while gathering information for my new purchase. The place you refer to is way north of eureka, correct? That's my idea of a getaway place, and sled reliability would be a major factor (plus some survival gear + the 19/42 on those tricky punch outs + some snicker bars). How has the gas mileage been on that 8, and are you breaking your own trail the last 15-20 miles or so to your cabin? I here conditions can turn bottomless just after a storm out there, making it more than just a day trip, and a bad place to ride alone. Cheers, Paul.

this year we have had one single rider out that way a couple of times(local guy looking for wolves) otherwise we break trail everytime...fuel milage is pretty good..went out for a week at x-mas to new years and I pulled two sleds in..1 had 70 gallons of gas the other had 2 big coolers of food, and other supplies...only unhooked 1 sled once and that was half way up the hill to my cabin..its a pretty steep climb up out of the valley...fuel economy varies but normal trail running she is pretty good about 10 miles to the gallon..only time it was bad was dragging both loaded sleds breaking trail in about bumper deep snow..about 8 and a half gallons in about 50 miles..pretty good I think for trail breaking with a load..

yea thats the area, our riding starts from there and goes north..is an awesome place....yea I have a gps mounted right off the triple clamps...I ride out of there in whiteouts all the time..been going there since 96..average 5000 miles out there a year..haven't been out there much this year due to getting the kids all new sleds too so been doing day trips everywhere..but will be hitting it heavy again here soon...where do you ride the most?

I ride the most between Anchorage and Denali. I have rode into many places in the 150 mile radius of Anchorage. I really enjoy the bumpy powder swamps around trapper lake and have done some high mountain riding / exploring in the talkeetnas. Petersville has been my all time favorite since a young age. I'm most familiar with the rivers in the BS basin off the Parks, and they take me to lots of great swamp lands. It's getting a bit boring though. I'm just getting back into riding again and have modded out a 800 pol with 136 x 2 paddle (currently looking for a 151 skid for it). I enjoy boondocking through our backyard gardens of the state and haven't hit a single tree yet this year (at least one that hasn't picked a good fight). I'm a retired Jedi knight and mortality is sneaking up on me....so I'm a little more careful these days and need to get myself a beacon and some smart people to ride with. I’m always up for a challenging ride, and love to explore, but I won’t do glaciers anymore <bad chapter>. I hope we can get the chance to meet up and ride someday. It's great that you got sleds for your kids! That makes you a "super dad!".

well your welcome to go with us any time...got divorced almost 4yrs ago spent the last 3 getting life working right again...lol.kids have always liked riding so figured it would be a good x-mas present..am working saturday for sure maybe sunday as well this weekend and kinda waiting to see if we get more snow but if I can't ride this coming weekend will be going the following..will let ya know later in the week...mike
