Hatcher Pass (willow/palmer)

Ive got 7-8 inches and steadily falling at my place in Wasilla. News was calling for up to 24" in parts of Anchorage.

Just to save anyone the uneccesary trip, I just heard the palmer side of Hatchers Pass is now closed to snowmobiles. Right after the most Epic dump of the year.

Remmy,
Thanks for the update. The latest I found was this report from a couple days ago (attached). Where did you get your info? I dont want to waste my time driving up there. Also good seeing you up at Valdez! Thanks.

Just talked to my Uncle and cousin who tried riding up there today and were turned around by the Park Ranger. I was really hoping for a midweek Archangel ride, once the sun came out. Bummer

Cant you still head up from the Willow side? Havent ridden sleds up there in awhile, Im not too sure of the more recent laws up there regarding closures and boundaries.

The Willow side isn't regulated like the "State Park" area. Should be good to go until you get to the State Park boundry, which should be marked with signs by the road area. Unfortunately, Archangel is past the boundry.

i have some very unfriendly words for the woman that "controls" that area like a nazi. anyone know her name? i want to call the forest service and complain about here. (without using the language i want to use!) probably won't do much good but it can't hurt. maybe everyone should. i'll post the phone number and name of person you need to call when i get it figured out.

hey remmy, did you uncle say how much new snow was in the parking lot when they got turned back?

pura vida

thanks for the name

ok so this is who i think you need to call to complain. i would be for sure but it is wednesday and they are obviously closed on wednesday. i mean, come on, who works in the middle of the week? anyway here is a name and phone number.

(907) 745-3975
Area Superintendent: Wayne Biessel

i am going to call to complain. i listened to the message and it closed on friday the 25th. you know, the day we got the largest snow event of the year! there was enough to ride on the 24th but after a foot of snow the conditions just weren't good enough.

now if anyone (and everyone should) calls and complains don't yell, scream, and swear. no matter how how upset you get. that never gets anywhere. state that you are disappointed it is not open, or wasn't for the weekend, there is no excuse as to why it remained closed after the last snow fall, and express how kimberly is openly hostile towards sleds and sledders. especially when compared to ranger pat (who unfortunately retired and then passed away from cancer) who was a great guy and 110% fair. never showed favoritisms towards or against either skier or sledder. i just think we should voice our opinions because as we all know the squeaky wheel... honestly though the more annoying we are, or should i say persistent, the more difficult it will be for them to shut riding areas down. i needs to start before they propose shutting an area down. anyway i could go on, but i'll end my rant and frustration here. call and tell them how you feel.

Complaining

Trust me Biessel isn't the one to complain to. Your complaint will go nowhere with him. He is the superintendant of parks for the Mat-Su. He is also the Ranger that likes to write tickets to riders but refuses to enforce regulations on skiers, etc using snowmobile only trails. I got a ticket from him last fall.

You need to complain to Biessel's boss ie the Director or Assistant Director of State Parks. Kimberly is usual friendly and cooperative although she is still a far cry from Dennis Heikes or Pat Murphy.

One other thing to keep in mind is that they may have closed the area as the avy danger is getting too high with the warm temps. The slides that I saw come down the day before they closed the area were right down to ground level and covered a fairly large areas.

thanks mark

i'm sure your correct but i am going to call and chat anyway. might also call his boss. (i did just call but he is out till tomorrow.) honestly i believe we need to go above all of their heads and write/call/email our oh so wonderful representatives and legislators. again i think opinions should be voiced before there is an real issue or possibility of closure. this way they will keep in mind some of us users when these issues come up. of course one of our biggest "problems" (very big quotes) is that the majority of sledders think and are of the same mind set in our lives in general. we want to be left alone to do the things we want to and enjoy and spend the rest of our time with people we love and care for. unlike these ridiculous activists who's entire lives revolve around one small issue or their specific agenda. these issues go beyond land issues and interfere into all aspects of our lives. but i'm ranting and rambling again so i will stop. thanks again for the info.

I concur

My buddy and I got turned around by her also. She said "which of the big CLOSED signs did you not see?" We saw the signs and thought "no way" so we called the hotline and it said the mountain was open and we proceeded anyway. When she confronted us with her charm we replied with "well, we ussumed the after the big dump there must be some misunderstanding and we figured that the message had to be the correct verdict because it would take way less effort for you to change the hotline message rather than hike your @$$ out here and physically change the sign." That didn't go over well with her. i didn't really mean it like that but now after her wrath, I sure do. she also stated that there are two ranger permanently assigned to the field? We promptly headed for the Willow side and shortly after getting unloaded and tearing down the trail I GRENADED my primary! !#@% #@$%#$%@^ #$ %$#$%@#!!!!!!

Oh well.... time to bust out the Grizz 7 hundo anyway... BUT that's not the point.

Yeah, me and akhunter75 and another dude were up there earlier in the year and she was rather rude, not just to us but, to everyone else that was in the parking lot that had a sled that day. So, we ended up leaving and went and rode the Willow side.

I almost lost it but, i kept my cool.

She sure does like to flex her muscles!

I also heard LOTS of complaints about Kym Miller, from different people, not just riders. She tried to turn be away couple years ago from going across the pass when it was open, just because I am a girl and there were no other tracks (middle of a week), and some sidehilling to do, and she figured it's her job to tell me it's not just a simple trail ride, and "you should wait till somebody else opens the trail" DUH!

Dear Sally...
