Franklin Basin 12/14/08

I think were gonna head up to Franklin Wednesday, or Thursday depending on the storms. Anybody up for a ride who knows the area real good? I know Tony Grove pretty good, but I haven't been to Franklin too much.

we went up to the sinks on sunday and when we pulled in the parking lot we were kinda dissapointed cuz it looked like there wasnt even a foot of snow but this was our first ride so we figured there would be enough on the trail for a good test/tune trail ride. luckily for us once we got back into the trees it was awesome looked just like what M8chris found in FB. atleast 3 feet of fresh fluff and like he said we were the only ones up there so we had it all to ourselves. we probably only went 30 miles or so but almost burned a hole tank of gas it was awesome. however due to the lack of a good base we did find a rock or two but only one sled ended up with some slight damage(tweeked A-arm) other than that the only problems was keeping the kitty breathing, i was wiping the intake vents off all day to keep rolling might be time for different airbox.

For that scenario, I would recommend using the SLC National Weather Service weather cameras.....they have one at the shed at the summit pointing right at the sinks. Give you a realtime look. It does look sketchy, but like you noted.......snotel is showing 35" at 8300ft.

I would be down to go but a drilled a rock and put a hole in my belly pan. New belly pan shoud be here in two days though. My next ride will probably be this weekend

ya, i check out that camera alot its kinda handy. we were really only expecting to get a trail ride to see how the sleds were running but it turned out to be much better than that.

M8chris- do you guys run different airboxes on your Ms or did you guys have the hole plug up issue to? i know both the m7s in my group were having issues in that fluffy stuff, especially when we had to let off the throttle a bit.

mine bogged once through out the day yesterday. Nothing else went wrong until the rock today.

I'm killerk's younger brother, and he called a little bit ago to say that wednesday is the day we're going. I'm suppose to work that day, but I do feel a cough coming on....

We could do that, I'm guessin we'll be heading up around 7 or so, so we should be able to be in Logan by 8 or 8:30 depending on the roads. How many people you guys got going? I think there's only 2 of us coming up.

It looks like it will be my dad and Brother (Mjunkie) for sure and possibly one other guy.
The plan is to leave ogden at 7:30... We will need fuel, so that should put us in the parking lot around 9:00 to 9:30.
I know my way around real well up there and we can stop and warm up at the cabin if needs be.
Would be nice to meet up with you guys and ride.

Chris, sorry to hear about your sled... At least it was just a belly pan.

Some friends and myself are making the drive from minnesota to garden city towards the end of january. Anyone be interested in showin some out of staters the area. Its our first time coming to Utah and I can't wait!

We went up today, and one word... DEEP!! I forgot the camera, so no pics, killerk might have some though. A good start, but still lots of rocks and stumps out there just under the pow.

what areas did you go to? Anyone for a ride Friday through Sunday or one of those days?

Snow is DEEP at higher elevations!
Only a foot or so in the parking lot if that... Gets better the further up you go.
We rode up steep canyon... You could only highmark the hill on the north side 1/4 of the way if you were lucky... Decent base but 2 feet or more of pow on top.
I got a little carried away and clipped a rock:mad:
It snapped half of the lower A-arm bolt and bent the A-arms, so back to the trailer for some repairs... Luckily we had a spare bolt and spacers, so we straightend them and got back on the snow.
We went almost half way up boss canyon but the creek beds and fallen trees are still a problem, so after making a wrong turn and getting stuck we decided to head over to whites canyon.
We broke trail all the way to the dry lake bed and the hills were covered very well... Had to be careful or you could get stuck on flat ground... very deep snow up high.
As soon as it settles there will be a great base.

looks like a missed a good day. How wAs whites? Any rocks?

There are still rocks... Boondocking through the trees you have to be careful of fallen logs and the creek beds are not covered yet so you have to be careful where you go.
Once you get half way up the snow is deep!
All of the hills up whites in the dry lake bed are covered extremely well.
Even the steep rocky part is 100% covered.
I was amazed at how good and deep the snow was up top.
Up top you don't have to worry too much about rocks.
As soon as it settles it will be great.

Hey Killer, you gonna be up there this Saturday?

Its looking like I will be working.
I could go, but I need to bolt on new A-arms and I haven't installed my CPC torsion conversion so I think I will do some work this weekend and plan a ride next week.
I am only working monday and tuesday next week and don't have to be back to work until the 5th so I will keep in touch and we can plan something.
Mike
