This is my Knife.
There are many like it, but this one is mine.
My Knife is my best friend.
It is my life. I must master it,
as I must master my life.
Without me my Knife is useless.
Without my Knife, I am useless.
I must stab my Knife true.
I must stab straighter than my enemy who
is trying to kill me.
I must stab him before he stabs me.
I will.
Before God I swear this creed.
My Knife and myself are defenders of my country.
We are the masters of our enemy.
We are the saviours of my life.
So be it ... until there is no enemy
but peace.
Amen.
I've been active duty for 9 years now, and carry a knife every day. Its not for self defense, its a tool I use on occasion to cut things. The only time I considered it for self defense was when I was in Iraq last summer. You don't typically carry a loaded weapon while on base and there are a lot of local nationals and third country nationals that work on base. I wasn't going to trust them as far as I could throw them. The other thing was if I was ever in a roll-over in an MRAP, I had it on my body armor and could use it to cut the seatbelt.
I will say that it is very very unlikely that you will be put in a situation where you can not retreat, or otherwise escape without having to defend yourself with a knife. 99% of the time, these situations are avoidable, the other 1% you will be bringing a knife to a gun fight. Oh and don't be the guy who pulls a knife when someone tries to fight you 1 on 1. As soon as you draw steel, someone will be throwing lead. If there is reason, then throw down like a man and give/take your licks like one. Everyone has a few scrapes growing up, its just part of life.
Took this a minute ago, straight out of my pocket. Its been around the world with me:
