Dakota Access Pipeline protesters

Take a look at this pipeline map. Would anyone think that maybe some of them go under water?
If one could get rid of every pipeline and replace it by shipping product by rail, truck, or barge would that be the better alternative? Even the protesters want, gas, diesel, propane, natural gas, oil, lubricants, plastics, electricity, jobs, etc. and the list goes on and on.

it is funny how everyone today uses false equivalence to prove their point. I.E. airplanes. failures per miles flown to pipeline failures per pipe laid. Not even close to the same thing but on the surface it sounds good. What you say is correct its about risk management. oil and gas industries have put profits way above safety for years and the environment has taken the brunt of the impact because as in the BP settlement that their lawyers know they can just fight it out in court for years and years and never really be held liable for the damages. No one has mentioned that 176,000 gallons of oil has already leaked out of this exact pipeline just upstream from where this protest was being held. The article i read the leak was reported by a farmer in the area not the safety features put in place to prevent leaks in said pipeline. I am not naive to the fact this country relies on oil and gas. However I enjoy drinking water and breathing so there has to be a happy compromise somewhere. OH i apologize for using such dirty language

Vetting the whole picture?

Is there any reason to doubt the veracity of this article in the Bismark Tribune? If so, any solid info to back it up?

Pipeline route plan first called for crossing north of Bismarck
An early proposal for the Dakota Access Pipeline called for the project to cross the Missouri River north of Bismarck, but one reason that route was rejected was its potential threat to Bismarck’s water supply, documents show.

If we've learned anything in the recent years, it's that most media has a left leaning bias.
From the wording of headlines to the content of articles is most often driven to support this bias as well.

News articles have become opinion articles for the most part.

Use your head people.
If you think there is less chance of spills through rail and truck transport, then by all means, join the protesters in their illegal obstruction of construction progress.

So what do you guys want to know on this??????

I live right here and have been dealing with this crap since August!!

To answer a couple of the questions above.......

The pipeline is mainly on private land but will cross a small section of Federal land as well. The Federal land is NOT reservation it is the Army Corps of Engineers land. It's basically the land between the current shore and the high water mark or up to the border of the private land.

As far as crossing north of Bismarck, yes I believe that was on the table but after several studies it was not cost effective to cross north due to population and the amount of roads in that area.

The current area where this pipeline runs through Morton County is very sparsely populated and consists of open county, pastures and very few roadways that need to bored under.

As far as the protesters themselves, its NOT just the out of state people or the professional protesters. There have been several people, locals down there and out of state people that have been creating issues.

This is also NOT peaceful!!!!!!!! Most are very disrespectful, rude and basically think they can do what they want. They have assaulted people, vandalized equipment, threatened and harassed people, including local law enforcement, trespassed numerous times and have set up this camp on Corps land, not the reservation. Also as mentioned above, yes the MESS that will be left behind on this property will be ridiculous.......and they claim to be protecting mother earth???????

On different occasions they have lit cars, tires and other debris on fire to block county and state roadways and continue to try and disrupt the local people not engaged in the protest.

It's basically a big mess but things have been more calm lately due to the weather.

Hopefully they keep dispersing and this goes away!!!

I would bet there is something more that we are not hearing. Is it possible that decades or centuries of broken deals and promises might be culminating on this pipeline?

No......it comes down to the usual.......money!

From what I've heard from several sources is that the pipeline was originally slated to go through the reservations but the tribe wanted more $$$$$. Well, I guess the pipeline decided to pay less and re-route to the north of the reservation.

This pipeline also parallels a gas pipeline that was put in during the late 80's. All the studies have been done and obviously done again. No tribal or sacred burial lands disturbed.

As far as "broken deals"......what are we suppose to give the United States back to the native american population and move back to Europe ??????

I don't know how to post these images in a post so please bear with me. The first link shows the Mississippi water shed. The second is the mapped pipelines in the lower 48. So please everyone look at the two images then maybe you can come to your own conclusion on pipelines. OH! And I have lived and worked off and on in North Dakota mostly Bismarck, Hazen, Beulah, and the Bakken oil fields since 1983. I have family and friends there, so listen to what FatDogX is saying, because he is right on the money. No pun intended.

I grew up on a small farm in the. 70's & 80's
Back then we (like most other farmers) would dump our waste oil on the ground.
Grass would grow right up to where oil was dumped over and over for decades. this area had a natural sloping grade and there was zero evidence of runoff damage, and rain naturally drained through this area.

Let's say for easy math, a farmer goes through 50 gallons of oil per 1,000 acres farmed. Let's estimate around 20 million of the 42 million acres of in SD is being farmed.
That's a billion gallons per year in SD alone, without any noticeable evidence.

Now I realize many of these numbers could be argued, but the point I'm making is how inconsequential an oil spill is compared to what the media would lead the public to believe.

Of course zero spillage is the goal, but there are acceptable failure numbers as well.

Honestly its not about the water, its not about the land and its not about mother earth, this is just the newest vehicle or way to protest, riot and raise hell against the rule of law. When was the last time you heard anything about black lives matter????? This is just the latest thing that is "cool" on social media for people to follow instead of being a productive member of society, giving back to your community, going to work and trying to better yourself and your family!!!

I was told Warren Buffett hires the protesters since he owns railroads.
When oil can’t travel by pipeline, it goes by rail.

Interesting development...

Not really.........Things happen, we address it, deal with it, fix it and move on.

Everything we build, create, manufacture, repair and use can fail. That is a fact and just because that is a fact, do we completely stop forward movement and betterment of our way of life and our country to include infrastructure? Otherwise we would all be sleeping in basic wooden structures, still using the mail to communicate and riding horses everyday to get places.

On a related subject. We are going west the first week of January and one rider in our group who lives here and is in the army national guard has been activated and is to report to Bismarck on January 1st to protect local law enforcement who in return are protecting the people who are working from the people that are not working. He currently is working and enrolled in night school here, but that doesn't matter. He can lose his job, and of course lose out on school and will have to make that up. They were told to cancel spring semester also. I guess they want to be up to 800 guardsman. We are hoping this activation will be cancelled but so far it has not been. So to me it looks like more tax dollars and more people being separated from their families.

I'm not sure what this means????

is to report to Bismarck on January 1st to protect local law enforcement who in return are protecting the people who are working from the people that are not working.

Protect local law enforcement??? Law enforcement have been dealing with this since August and the guard has recently become involved. I would say they are there assisting but I wouldn't say they are there "protecting" LE.

Either way, it's a messed up situation for everyone involved and it needs to end!!!

The protesters are breaking the law. Period.
The only reason that they are not being treated as such is optics, and that is BS!

Whatever method necessary to end this is up to the protesters. They can disburse peacefully or they could be hauled out in body bags. I'm fine with either one because it's up to them.

You are correct. I said that wrong. They are deployed to assist local LE. And protect the workers on the pipeline. And I agree with you , it is messed up!

Not knowing the history of this or any other situation in the area keeps me from siding with the protesters. I will say I rarely have seen the indians act out to this extent,so somethings got to have them twisted up. I do know that nothing stands in the way of corporate greed. I do realize that jobs are created and forward progress needs to continue. Corporate backed government or government backed corporates will win this. And big money isn't afraid to buy body bags. I would dare say that one would even fit mafesto's bloated ego.
