Tim,
I am happy he is doing good! I called him earlier today, I was praying he would get out of ICU. There are a few things we can all learn from this.
Bill (yes he is Crazy) is a very experianced rider. He rides several times a week so he is far from a rookie and I have rode with him and have been impressed at his abilitys. So this can happen to any of us, exerianced or not.
I carry enough gear for myself, or I thought I did until I seen Blondz list. I dont think I could pack all of that without sinking in or adding overload springs:D.
Thanks for everyones inputs on what to pack. I am now rethinking what I need.
Tim I remember how exhasted we were last year up on that cliff. I am glad we made it out of there that night.
I just took an Avy class last week by NAOI and they were offering a package deal for a Beacon, probe and shovel for $339. Anyone intrested can call them at 907-376-2898 for more info.

very true you cant get complacent no matter how good a rider you are....Tim, add my best wishes and a hope for a quick recovery with everyone elses on here!! And to the guys helping recover the sleds id be there with you if i wanst at work so you all deserve some :beer;.... this is the sledding community pulling togeather..nice work!!!

Dad's at home now and doing real good .I appreciate all the well wishes . I got some great ideas from the lists you guys are putting up . Never can be too careful.

man, i just realized how much all the crap i carry weighs...(some of you have seen my backpack)

mabye i could loose some of the tools and extra gas and ride a yamaha....

but then i remembered..."friends dont let friends ride yamaha"

Tim, glad everything is well. i cant actually believe how many sledders ride without survival gear.

one thing i almost always forget to bring is food...i always have water, but i forget the snickers...etc.

j/k about the yamaha comment.....i used to have one.

This why we need a single thread

We all can all learn from the near disaster that occured to Turbo Tim's dad (an experienced and capable rider). Because it was posted under Cantwell it is easy to miss- thats why I think we should have one thread.

I am not a safety nut (at least I don't think so), but I hope I carry enough gear that I can spend the night and come back with all my toes and fingers: space blanket, shovel, fire, snowshoes, food, water, etc.

My best on the recovery. -Tim Cook

Along with my beacon and survival gear I'm thinking of ordering a SPOT tracker to carry. It is a very reasonable price and not a bad yearly fee for peace of mind. This device could have really helped Turbo Tim's father. Finally something us Alaskan's can really use year round. Check out there website for more info. My neighbor is a State Trooper and attended a workshop a few weeks ago that talked about this very technology. It appears that Avy beacons are going to be going to this newer technology in the near future.

Glad to hear your dad is recovering and that everything worked out the way it did. Take care out there and be safe!

While on the topic of survival gear, id like to point out that if you own and M series, Rev, or IQ chassis you have built in snowshoes/shovels in the form of your side panels.

The family got STUCK on over-flow one time in Eureka a couple years ago and i took my M7 side panels off and was able to skid around on my knees easy where people were punching through up to the hip. If it became necessary you could use some rope or string to fashion some pretty good snow-shoes

Hmmmmmmmm.... well, between working two jobs in the peak of riding season, raising two teenage girls, taking a college class and my own obsession for riding ~ I'd love to, but I don't know where I'd find the time ~ LOL

I do try to send business your way for corporate events and tourists though ;)

wow, and i thought I had a busy life!!! Good for you!!

Chris, if ever need a hand let me know i was going to help you blaze trail after the dump last year but missed you bu a few days, slope 2 on 2 off:D....i envy anyone who gets paid to ride!! And my family is planning a reunion next winter up here so ill more than likely be needing your services!!!

Thats actually VERY reasonable 100 a year for service and 160 for the device makes it less than a lot of beacons with probe....good info thanks!! And i can use it on the boat!! It would be awesome if it had a beacon built in....

I'm gonna order 2 of those if they work in Alaska , The coverage area doesn't look very promising to me though .

they use globalsat's system and I have talked to those guys about there Emergency only service which is really reasonable (like 80 to 100 a year also) but there phones are almost a grand they say if your on the north facing side of a mountain and you dont have a clear view of the southern half of the sky youll have to find high ground to get a good signal (because sat. signals are line of sight with the satelite in orbit. So form most riding areas your pretty good except Hatchers but there if you can get on a ridge youll have cell service there....but Cantwell, Petersville, Turny, Valdez, Eureka and Lost lake your pretty good. Im really considering one myself, sounds like a hell of a deal for anywhere your totally out of cell range.:D

ps the last time i talked to them they said they were going to launch a few more satelites to cover more of the north pacific shiping lanes which would greatly boost our coverage, almost to the north slope, by 2009....so its only going to get better (now if there phone prices would wed be in business!!!)
