Burning Alpine Sleds!!!

From the outside looking in this has been a really cool project. I wish I could build stuff I think up, but I am mechanically declined. I would set the hull up for a recommended engine pump combo and build everything a guy needed for that set up as a kit. That way a guy short on skills could assemble one easily using the recommended engine/pump and save a ton of time. If a guy wanted to use something different he's on his own. The detail stuff is what kills a project like that. You can look in Autotrader and see ton's of project cars that are 90% done that guys burn out on and sell because they got bogged down in the detail work. Good luck however you do it!

Awesome info!!!

You hit the nail on the head on that one. I couldn't have described it even close to as well as you did. Some of my buds tried to build cars and failed. I am the exception. It is not so much a work ethic or anything in particular but I don't sleep. I keep myself awake until it is done. My brain just doesn't stop. I have to finish every project. I do not know why, it just is. If I don't accomplish what I set out to do, I don't sleep. I have worked on many projects and the longer ones make for a cranky wizzz.... lol. I have learned somewhat to back off a bit and relax, but that is only because I know if I don't the project drags on due to lack of concentration. Still, I have to continue to get sleep.

I am on the 3rd hull and I can assume once I make the decision to install the motor, it will be a given'r situation again!!! I look forward to the end product!!!

Getting ready! Maybe I'll start on saturday.... at noon!!!

BTW, I agree 100% with you on the keep it simple/keep it standard thing. I believe once a few completed units are on the water close to home I will have some very good info logged. I believe at least two will be complete this season. I need some seat time in a couple different rigs to gain this knowledge base. We have already learned a couple lessons the hard way. I believe it is only the beginning of the journey. I am looking forward to progress and learning what makes them tick!!!

I owned a Sea Doo Explorer for a couple years. It was basically a rigid hull inflatable with a Sea Doo seat/bar set up right in the middle. It would be pretty to cool to have a similar setup on one of your hulls. It would be nice to be up a little higher so you can see rocks and holes better and be able to absorb some shocks with your legs and not just your butt. Be awesome to fish off of too as you are up and supported when you cast and fight fish. Google Sea Doo Explorer and you will see what I mean. Have you got a cost for a hull yet? You are kinda sucking me into getting one of these or maybe two so my son and I can run some of the local smaller rivers.

For Sure!!!

I have a close ballpark on the $$$. I want to do one more to confirm the costs. They get cheaper everytime I build one because I get better at it.

The other issue is they aren't certified yet. We could discuss it though. You can reach me in Ft Mc Murray at Alberta Industrial Sheet Metal.

Here are a couple new teasers....

I recognize that sled.....

I was right behind gene when that sled lit up in flames and scorched his arse... Lol. Wow. First time I ever experienced that!!! We all helped put out that fire, shovels were flying everywhere. Warrens angry apex helped out a lot too lol.... That was a VERY long day after having to tow it all the way out over hunters range or wherever it was into Mabel lake. It sure is nice to see you have it all cleaned up!!! That thing rocked!!!

Thanks!!!

I appreciate you guys and your efforts to put the fire out. I was real glad the big guy got himself put out. That would have been a real bad day if he had got burned. As it was it burned up a backpack and burned holes in his pants. I can always get a new sled but buds are hard to replace. I was having a tuning issue so he took it to Yammy fest to see if he could work it out. I guess he did... I never got to ride it lol. This winter!!! And there won't be flaming/leaking tank issues this time!!!

New Project

Here we are again. This is the latest. Leaving on a holiday for a week so it will have to wait. Shouldn'd be long once I get back. I want to take it for a few runs before winter.

Reminder!!!!

Alpine Motorsports
Salmon Arm, BC

So here is the thing.... it seems there is an issue with Alpine Motorsports Turbo's out of Salmon Arm, BC. I know of more than one that has burned. Recently my Alpine sled caught fire. They have a fuel cell issue... as I have discovered... they are still using the same part in their new builds. I never knew this was a problem until this happened to me, but once it did, I discovered it has happened before. They claim there is no liability on their part and will offer no help.

Just a warning!!! Do not buy Alpine!!! I don't know who is better but good alternates may be "Impulse" or "Powderlites" turbo sleds.

Many of my family and friends have ridden my sled and unknowingly been at risk. The guy who was riding it caught fire. It burned his pants and backpack!!! LUCKY he got the pack off and the pants out!!!

The cap on the back of the tank came loose and fuel poured out onto the track and when he crested the hill and backed out of the throttle the exhaust ignited the fuel on the track. I do not see any CSA, ANSI or other ratings on this tank. Guessing it is not Canadian approved for motor vehicles. Working on finding out.

I feel very lucky the guys were on the ball and flipped the sled on its side and buried it in snow with shovels and a couple sleds pulled up beside it and roosted it with snow untill it was completely buried. The damage could have been way worse!!!

If you pay close attention, the front of the tunnel, tank and turbo area are free of soot and sign of fire. I don't have a pic here but the inside of the tunnel is completely black. The seat burnt completely. We flipped the seat up and there was the cap.... just sitting there!!! Good thing the seat had this area contained as it may have blown fuel all over the rider when it ignited and really caused harm to him!!!

If you have Alpine or want one, make sure your life insurance is paid in advance and your sled insurance is up to date!!!

If you have an Alpine that burned or know of one that has please add to this site. I contacted Julian on the 10th of April, 2012 and filled him in. I am adding this info so if anyone decides to pursue the legalities it is documented here on snowest for all to see. I will stand beside you in a court of law and testify. All you have to do is contact me and I will be glad to assist you!!! I don't normally take things to the extreme but this is an extreme case. These guys know there is an issue and have no intention of fixing it, they just want your money and that is where it ends!!!

FYI!!!

Gonna post some pics for your info!!!

So here I am once again. This is a reminder of what may happen if you chose Alpine!!! I made it my buisiness to push this to my limits. It is snowmobile season once again and people will be purchasing new rides. I do not expect to stop people from buying an Alpine, I just wish to make a point for one more winter. I hope to pass my level of service on to those wishing to purchase one of these sleds and let Julian know what customer service is really about. We need to remember these are the days of internet and high tech com systems. Piss poor service is one step away from an internet frenzy!!! I believe after this winter I will have cooled down enough to forget this thread but for now... it will survive.

Beware!!!! Alpine has and will continue to BURN!!!

Lol

i mailed ya a postage stamp to put on the back of that baby ,just write my address below it and get her in the mail...lol..

I'm back in town and working on the new one. I need to get it done and tested a couple runs before winter.

I have another project to move onto.... a fryed Yammy!!! I need to do a front cooler mod and put on a new track because the fire burned the old one enough to make me nervous to run it. I have the Skinz front end to install and I am still not sure about the fuel cell and seat. I am sure the solution will be found shortly. I am in good shape because I bought a new pro as my second... or first sled for the year untill the Yammy is back in tip top shape. I have cleaned it up and got it ready. Realistically it needs a tank and seat and it is running again.

Still it is in summer storage so untill fall is upon us in full force and boats are put away, snowmobiles are not quite on my mind.....

Sled season

So every one is getting ready in one way, shape or form. I am just in the realization mode. I can feel the chill in the night breeze. I haven't done enough fishing yet but I know it is getting close to the end of the season. I have considered what needs to be done to be ready.

I purchased a new Pro for this season. It will be nice to be back to a having a stock backup sled and a ride that is not particular to elevation and temperature like a mod sled. It has been quite some time since I had a stock sled. I am looking forward to doing more riding at home for a change. I ride here every winter and am always watching the guages and being careful. I have lost sight of the real deal in the past years. It is really about having fun and not having to work hard to do it.

I borrowed the dealer sled last winter a few times. It convinced me to have a stocker under my roof. I have had backups to backups for years. I think at one time I actually had 3 or 4 engines and 2 to 3 sleds. I can remember splitting a case on more than one occasion and doing a crank or pulling the top end in the evening to do a top end job so I could ride the next day. I still have a few days that are not like that lol.... I think that is backwards!!! I am hoping this is the year to ride... not work all winter long to fix something just to go for a ride.

My Yammy will be repaired and I have high expectations that it will be trouble free this winter for the first time since I bought it. The injection system has been upgraded to Boost It and is actually tuned. The fuel cell is going to be replaced by a fuel cell that can't melt or have a cap fall off or a fitting come loose. I have a Skinz front end and once again have high expectations for the overall performance of my ride for the season.

Here's to an AWESOME winter for everyone!!!

Later.....

Winter....

I am looking forward to the white stuff. I have almost completed my new boat. I am hoping to get it into paint within the next week and then re-assemble it. My goal is to test it before the ice hits the water. We tested a boat today... frosty!!! It was not mine and had no windshield or top for protection. It is these times I really appreciate my big boat with all of the above and heat to boot.

I have given some serious thought to what dirrection I should be heading with sleds this season and the seasons to come. I believe turbo is the only way to fly these days. My new Pro is going to stay stock... at least this season. I have the Yammy and some goodies to put on it. I still like the 4 stroker....

I was thinking seriously about the next project. I think next year I'll do the Pro. I am always looking for the right buy on something else. My thoughts have wandered to a mid mount/rear mount Yammy. I have had the opportunity to ride a bunch of sleds in the last few years. Alpine is the last kit I will consider. I really like the performance of the front mount and Alpine was a pioneer in the industry, however they had the market cornered at one time and lost sight of the consumer. They are pumped up on Alpine rap. I have recomended them on many occasions in the past. I guess it only takes once to get a completely different outlook on service.

My Bud just bought a car from RK Motors. It is a 69 Coronet Rt Convertible 440. It never got delivered until a month ago... summer is getting close to over!!! He picked it up and drove it home. He has been fighting cooling. Normally I would have said the old stuff had some of these issues... BUT... he went to change the thermostat and there wasn't one installed. His neighbor is a certified mechanic and they installed the t-stat. In the meantime some antifreeze ended up dripping at the back of the engine. At a glance one would have guessed the t-stat had dripped antifreeze as it was being changed but the mechanic had a closer look. The block is cracked!!! My bud phoned the boys and asked what they wanted to do.... guess what... same as Alpine GFY....!!! So after two weeks of owning the car and only a few cruises around town and one road trip to pick it up Go F yourself!!!!

I am back to square one. I don't trust anyone to work on my Jeep. I let very few people touch anything I own. I have been pulling wrenches on my own equipment since I was a kid on our ranch in southern AB. Like most farm/ranch kids we had no $$$ and that meant to have something we had to build it. I think my next 4 stroke project will be a turbo kit built in my shop. I will need fuel system components and I like the Boost it system. The rest is easy for me. I like the turbo in the tunnel for the cooling effect and the fact it is away from the fuel system. I also like the weight balance of the sled with a mid mount or rear mount. I am not sure what is the answer but one can only try.

Sometimes it is the journey and not so much about the destination that counts. In my world Alpine's journey is near it's end. I see better kits and better service and better technology elsewhere. The good old boys club is breaking into little segments and the other manufacturers are stepping up to the plate. They want buisiness and haven't had the easy road to coast on so they are used to working hard and servicing their clients and customers. I am not saying that all of the older companies are worthless. Racers Edge, CR, Split Second Performance, Neils Power Pipes, Mountain Mod have been around for years and these guys know how to take care of customers. Boondocker, SLP and Boss Noss are bigger guys who have learned that service is key. Fast, AVID and Wahl Bros have managed to survive.... Why? The question has been asked... what do you think???

Happy trails!!!

Prince Rupert

If you come to prince Rupert and bring the little boat give me a heads up. There will be a few of us who would like to see it from prince Rupert and terrace

Well I almost have the next generation boat built. I can't say how much I really want to come and do the Skeena and the gitney doits.... spelling probly is wrong but any way, I really want to come up next season for one of the salmon runs. I missed the Stikine run... probably by a week or two. We went in and took care of the 1/4 section we own there. Time is a hard thing to come by in this day and age. It seems we spend 99.9% of our lives working. I have to manage a few trips in the winter for sleds so my summer holidays are limited. I can do anything I like as a buisiness owner but I have to make sure we make $$$ too. If all goes well.... I will make a trip to Prince Rupert next year.

I lived there for a couple years when I was a kid... I have that return to the past thing in my blood.... My family owns a piece of property not far from there... It's just gotta be done!!!

I will let you know if I am on my way. We run the rivs here in bigger boats. I run the Stikine in my big boat. I think a change and some smaller rivs for a little boat would be an awesome adventure!!!

Later.... Happy Trails!!!!

Almost Winter....

I am scrambling.... YUP!!! To get the little boat done!!! It is so close. I am working on cables. I got the trim done tonight. The Throttle and Steering are left. Ya... 66.666% left.... But pretty much everything else except the engine compartment lid is done. It is sooooo close..... I hope tomorrow the cables will ber done. Then the engine lid will follow on monday. I will get the paint done by mid week if all goes well. I haven't posted pics but I will once I have the time to spend on a CPU. Then.... I can move to sleds. I have to get this rig tested before winter. If I can't here, I honestly have to say I will drag it south to warmer waters to test it. It is my curse. I have to finish everything I start in a respectable time frame. I can't seem to wait until next spring... I'd go nuts waiting. I don't care how much my sled rocks... my little boat would be in the back of my mind all winter. It will be done!!! It will be tested!!! It will rock... I have a great feeling about this boat. Sooooo looking forward to taking it for a spin....,

Keep ya all posted!!!

I ended up buying a Turbo Nytro. It has a MCXpress 270HP kit, Skinz front end, KMOD skid, 163 CE 2.5, Raptors all around, Shockwave, trail tank and a few other mods. Seems to be a really nicely built and maintained sled. FYI from all my research MCXpress builds a really nice kit. I got a chance to ride Chris Brown's Yami and I went on a search to find as close a sled as what he rides as I could. He rides his sled about 100 days a year and has no time for any major hassles. His recommendation went a long ways in my decision to buy one.

Agreed!!!

I think you are on the right track. I rode Chris's sled last winter. I bought a skins front end for this season because of it. He had a couple issues last winter when he upped the HP but the boys made sure it was running strong after some tuning. Service is the key. The builders know their product and what makes it tick. If they don't help, it doesn't matter how good they are.

Chris runs a timbersled rear. I liked it. I run an M-10 in a CR tunnel with a live axle and quick adjuster. Chris has the quick adjustment on his Timbersled. I am not sure what I would buy next time for sure. I really like the M-10... but I liked the weight transfer of the Timbersled and the ease of handling. My M-10 has a heavy feeling in the front in comparison however on the steep stuff I think it is easier to manage and feels like it should flat out out climb the competition. I have never competed so it is just a riders comparison.

I am sure you will love the new ride. Fill us in on how it works. I am looking forward to your thoughts.

Happy trails!!!!
