Best M series Aftermarket Bumper Mod?

So after reading all this I think the bdx is the kit to go with, but would you buy the kit for a 05-07 or the 08 kit for a 06 and what are the differences ? On the 08 kit would I have to flatten the cooler ? Does the 08 kit look better and perform better ?

The '07 and '08 kits are almost identical. The only difference is the edge of the running boards. You can leave the cooler where it is but if you decide that it is hanging down and feel you want to move it you'll have to flatten it and do some fab work to mount it up flat. You need the '05-'06-'07 kit.

OK, tell me if I'm missing something here. Have an 06 Crossfire that will be getting updated as well. Looking at the cooler, I cannot see why it just can't be moved forward a few inches to clear the way for the tunnel end cap? I measured and then compressed the rear suspension as much as I possibly could, and there is no way track will contact the cooler. So I ask, am I missing some reason why it just can't be shifted forward a few inches?

ZRrrr, it is no problem to do as you said with the 06 Crossfire, Deetap has already done exactly as you described. I`ll see if I can get you some pics tomorrow.

I bought a bdx bumper kit from the snow show, but it did not come with any instructions. Does any one have some they could post or email me? thanks

My Version of BDX Bumper Mod

Here's what I did with the BDX kit, including cooler support brackets. I cut off a strip of the old bumper to clean up the look a bit and have a good place to mount the WPS led tail light.

I didn't want to add too much weight, but did want something for a tail light - although the bumper may be in the way of the light in some situations.

Looks good, I ended up purchasing the 09' tail light and snow flap for a cleaner look. I like how you trimmed your old one down though.

Work in progress.

Mountain Doo I think there is a guy on here that sells them chrome muffler bearings.

Oh never mind I was thinking of a clutch kit.

Here I go back in the red again. LOL

Just one more crappy opinion

Glad to see so many people figured it out...wish I would have seen this "before" I spent all
weekend troubleshooting this modification. I did finally figure it out and am VERY pleased with the results.

Use the BDX bumper and foot pegs (very strong and well built) not to mention it just looks faaassssst. I was very UNimpressed with the appearance of the stock 08/07 flap mod. It looks cheap and thrown together. Big props to A/C who without knowing it...put together an '09 OE rear flap and taillight that works perfectly with this setup and makes it look "finished". The only parts you need to order are the taillight, the flap and the tunnel end cap. You can order the oem rivets if you want also (the thick black ones work well with the oe taillight).

One thing i noticed in many of these pictures is that the 153 has alot more more between the bumper rear and tunnel which gives more flexibility when it comes to the taillight and flap mod. In my case the 162 does not offer that kind of flexibility and the limited space works well with the '09 rear set. Trying to get my camera charged so I can take some pictures. Good Luck:D

TooDeepTodd:

Did you find that your cooler rubbed on the new bumper? It was close enough that I didn't want to see any issues, so I notched out the inner part of the bumper to give it more room. I believe that the bumpers come cut for the 162's and you can trim them down for the 153's. After reading some concerns on here about how the 08' coolers turn down and guys were either straightening them or replacing them with the 09'. In my oppinion, nothing changes between the track and cooler configurations, with the same protection as before the modification. I did however choose to leave mine long to give a bit more clearance for the cooler.

Tundramonkey- Thankx for the kind words. I'm a bigger guy (200+ lbs.) and I wanted to make sure the rear foot pads were plenty strong, and they seem to be.

Right now, I have not decided what to do with the cooler. I was thinking about leaving it just the way it is, adding one cross strap behind it, that would support a basic snowflap, until I saw some pics of how others had retained the factory flap, so now im thinking I might try that. If it's not in the way, I don't see a real reason to 'flatten' it out, unless im missing something. I've been really busy lately, so I havent done ANYTHING on it since taking those pics. Im sure I'll mess around a bit more as I finish the project.

Is there a funcitonal reason to flatten the cooler? Am I missing something?

the other idea I had was to use that other cross strap (not installed yet) to support an LED taillight. I just ordered a bunch of LEDs, so that will be my next 'learning experience' - making a LED light. Seems interesting enough. I'll make sure to post more pics as I continue.

One thing i'd like to post up here, is that when you look at the installs of the BD kit, vs. what I did, my bumper does not slope down to the boards, but is parallel to the top of the tunnel, with a decided 'step' down at the new rear foot rests. If I had to do over again, I think I might go with more of that slope that folks are doing with the BD kit. I'll follow up, as I get the bumper fully fastened on, (right now it's just clamped in place) and im wondering how that 'step' will affect the strength of the back part of the tunnel. I may have to add some triangulation back in there.

tail flap and cooler

Mtn cat is right, just about 100 bucks and 3 to 4 days from my dealer for the whole shooting match.

Yes, I am mounting the '09 tunnel end cap on an '08 tunnel (takes a little creativity but you'll "see" it when you get there.

As for the cooler...for those who don't understand what we are talking about. The '08 cooler is curved down to fit behind the stock bumper and flap. With this trick *** bumper tunnel mod that cooler sticks down and actually out the rear a little bit (very annoying) and if your an aggressive rider the possibility exists that it could get bumped or hit. That is not a chance I am willing to take out on the mountain, especially for such an easy fix. I flattened the cooler (didn't use the dually, though I thought about it:p) and cut out about 4" off the in and out pipes. Couple of aluminum pipe hangers from Home Depot at the rear and badda bing she fits like a glove and looks trick as hell.

For any doing this...pay close attention to the BDX instructions as they are a little vague or confusing for us country folk in some places and need to be clarified. I also ignored the cutting instuctions and used a 4" grinder with thin wheel for the cutting...way smoother and faster, plus easier to cut a perfect straight line. Good luck boys. PM if you need any coaching on this mod...it is worth it.

todd,
so you did'nt use the dooley truck method to flatten the cooler eh!
please do tell us the correct way to do it sir.
thanxs
