Bear Paw- INFO

I would be happy to bring my mini excavator up there but if they are full size blocks, I cant pick them up. I would need my 120 and I am not too comfortable hauling it all the way up with my dump truck without a proper turnaround. Will likely need at least a 60 or 75 size machine. I absolutely love Bearpaw. We discovered the place by accident many years ago and it has been in the top 10 places to ride we have been to.

its quite a shame, really. The road contructed around the washout is wide and completely safe. RVs used it all summer long.

There is minimal snow at the blockade now, and guys are riding their sleds from there to get to the goods, but the amount of wear&tear & damage being done to our sleds really sucks.

If someone were to move the rocks and cement blocks, the FS would really have to justify coming up there again to replace them..and at that point, their argument that they "do not have enough money to fix the road" would be completely invalidated as they clearly have enough money to pay employees to CLOSE the road.

If we get enough people to commit, next step is to pick a date.

I think we have the numbers, now we need a date. Post it on Facebook and we will have a huge group. Email the FS to let them know what we are doing.
Everyone I talked to is in 100%

A 60 size will lift them just fine as long as it's up to snuff on hydraulics. A big skid steer
might be a better choice just because they are easier to haul but would do a trial run some where before hauling one up there. Would probably need a short picking arm for a skid steer just to get the block away from the front tires a little... Bring some cable or chain just in case the cable inbedded in the block is bad...

Anyone know the name of the contractor who was hired to place the blocks and the rocks?
Need to shame this guy, what a loser.

Lets do it soon! this winter is coming early and the snow is awesome up there...hopefully its moved before someone burns their sled down from riding 3 miles of roads and no snow!

agreed!

Dude give me the coordinates I will bring my T870 up there .

This thread is getting longer by the day . It's ride time .

I'm in .

If the blockade gets moved they will probably block the road down at the mt baker hwy like they did a few years ago.

That's exactly what will happen, then we would never get up there. Move the blocks & the cops will be up there giving tickets. Love that area, wish there was a better answer.

Realy, shame the contractor? He was hired to do a job whether he agreed with the motives or not. I have done work that I wasn't enthused about but it's work. Besides, I would rather do commercial work than stuff for homeowners anyday. Only been stiffed by homeowners. At any rate we all love this riding area. The biggest statement is being made that folks are willing to take action and keep it open, likely breaking the law in the process . I saw the videos in Co. The stand off between the FS and the public ended well but if you were paying attention there were several FS folks on hand and it could have easily went the other way with everyone going to jail. I think a major problem is by and large King County sets the status quo for the state as such the brainwashed belief: Your "smelly, loud, polluting, terrain damaging sleds are ruining the environment." It was in King County that protests happened due to trump being elected. The majority of liberal voters are sympathetic, sometimes ignorantly, to the propaganda that motorized vehicles ruin the outdoors. I have fear that closing off areas to snowmobiles will continue to happen, especially in western washington. I know baker has been discussed before.
I am in no way suggesting to just stand by and let it happen. We as a group can have a big impact vs the few or the one. I have heard that several folks volunteered to repair the washout. I would have done so and been willing to offer my trucks and equipment to do so. I think all along the FS wanted to close the area all along. I am worried that if we as a group push too hard they may indeed close it at the bottom at Mt Baker Hwy. I hope this can get resolved so that my kids one day can enjoy this area.

If you guys want the area to get completely shut down then go ahead and move the blocks. As others have said, if these blocks are tampered with they will close the road at the bottom which will completely eliminate any possibility of riding that area. I think this whole thing is BS that they are making us park this far down the mountain but its better then not even being able to ride the area period.

just my opinion, govt agencies dont like to get shown up(moving the blocks) just out of spite they will try even harder to keep people out of the area.

the area IS shut down. you guys are seeing what us dirt bikers saw years ago. they go in and take out riding areas one by one with "temporary" damage related closures until your're elbow to elbow on whooped out crap with the leaf lickers complaining about erosion from all the bikes jam packed into one area.

Nobody is going to get a ticket for riding in there right now and the snow should be low enough to drop sleds at the barricade. That sounds open to me. The washout is a legitimate concern, FS has just done a bad job of enforcing the closure to all users. I'm against removing the temporary barricades that they've put up, that's just going to get more permanent barricades in their place and more enforcement. Besides, it looks like any real truck could just drive over those blocks the way they're buried.

Guys, did everyone read the previous thread that discussed the Nooksack Access and Travel management project? That EA has 2 roads slated for closure up canyon creek that are critical to access these riding areas. people complained and sent in letters, many of which the FS said were too late, now they are ignoring those letters carrying out their plan despite that process. Its no coincidence that these barriers went up. this is the first step in implementing that closure, the writing is on the wall. they are throwing sledders a bone here by claiming its "open". they know damn well it can't be ridden 90% of the time.

Organizing a work party to open the road is one of the only ways the FS will wake up and listen. There are strength in numbers, thats why at least 25 people would be needed. AND the FS would be notified of this work party so they can show up, likely forcing a dialogue right there on site. That is key. Have you ever heard of a protest? The letters, the meetings, the public input, blah blah blah- it didn't work, this was just a formality the FS is required to do by law. will you fight for this awesome riding area or will you just lay down and let them lie to you and take it away? For those that are worried about being arrested, give me a break....if you are that timid you may want to stay home anyway. maybe the work party opens the road that day, maybe they don't, but will have the ability to do so, and it will be a step in the right direction for access. Theres one thing for sure, Sitting at home will not get anything done.

not sure of coordinates. its been a while since i have been up there but as i recall- head up mount baker highway 542 toward baker ski area. 2 miles past town of glacier turn left on FS 31 canyon creek road. barricade/washout is up there 5 miles or so. Someone local needs to set a date for work party, so i can make the trip to be there.
