Avy victim at Johnsons Pass!!!!!!!!

This is the latest information given first hand- Troopers have canceled any recovery operations until Wednesday. Terry White, Yancy's friend, has purchased 30 ft probes and shovels to recover Yancy.
If anyone wants to come and help with the recovery, the shovels and probes will be available.
More information will follow as it becomes available.

If you guys need help recovering your friend I am more than willing to help out. I have a shovel but not a 30 ft probe. If you need anything else, like a pull behind sled or something, I can bring that along or you can borrow it, if for some reason I can't make it.

I will be there.
Let me know what time and where to meet.

As of my last post Forest Service is sitting at the Trail Head not allowing us in. They want to drop some Av bombs and stabalize the area before allowing anyone in.
Mike

I was told the same thing today. Sounds like they just want to make sure nothing else would fall on anyone during a search. They said it was about 1000' across and looked like about 4'-5' thick slab that came down. Anyone with current info please let us know when they will let us help. Again, my Prayers go out to the family and friends...

I just talked to the Troopers in Girdwood. At this time they don't know "for sure" when they will restart the search because of bad weather conditions & ash there. Trooper Peterson said they might not ask for help on this one because of the particulars of this location. They are however using Alaska Mountain Rescue group. I told the Troopers we have some volunteers willing to come out and help and "right now" they said they were turning people away. As always please respect who ever is in charge of any S&R

Just heard on the news that there was a search for Yancy today. No other details, and have been unable to contact Terry to confirm.

I just talked to couple of guy's who were allowed to go back to the slide site & they said that there was at least two more feet of fresh snow since last Saturday. They also said that the hill needs to blasted before any search can take place. The Wednesday recovery is on hold until this take's place.

Johnsons was totally socked in today and snowing. Yes there is another two feet of snow. So we stopped and Turny and went for a ride. It was sunny for about 2 hours and just a few cars in the parking lot. Good but sad day overall. RIP Yanci. Please be very carefull.

Thanks for the update Stan. Will stay in touch, ready to go as soon as we can get a green light.

The Latest

Spoke with Terry and here is the latest info to pass on concerning the search and recovery of Yancy.
Due to the Fresh snow that has fallen since Saturday, and that avalanche mitigation has not been done things are still on hold.
As of now, the Troopers will be coordinating stabilizing the mountain slopes using ordinance dropped from the air, Thursday morning. After that has been done they will re-enter the area with SAAR and Chugach Powder Guide rescue teams. They appreciate our willingness to help but believe the individual risk as well as the geographic area require the need to use only trained rescue personnel. They plan on basing their operation from the parking area at placer beginning Thursday morning.
If you have any specialized search equipment that might be useful to them please PM me with a phone # so I can pass on the information.
We are all anxious to bring Yancy home and do right by him and his family and friends. And waiting on others to do for us....is not our nature. But, this situation requires that we allow the Troopers and SAAR teams to do their job. Terry continues to do all he can to help in Yancy's recovery providing any resources at his disposal to that end.
Thank you to everyone.

Went to parking Johnsons parking lot. No one there today and it just felt weird to know theres nothing you can do yet. Lots of snow and lots of avys.

LiveAlaska,
Thanks for the update...I can only feel for the family right now. I pray for their comfort...cant imagine what they are feeling.

I hope they get in there soon and get him out of there, his family deserves nothing less.

Sounds like you will have a force to deal with. Logistics for the support will be huge. We have the red cross bring out their food wagon, (Mobile Winnebago) it will feed a countless number of people for a disaster or emergency situation. Just something to think about, take care of the rescue group with liquids and food. Keep everybody's strength up!

Sorry to hear, tough knowing that the search/recovery is postponed. Tough to sleep at night. I hope I have friends like you guys for my family if something were to go wrong.....
