Anyone ridden an 09 XP vs. 09 M8 - no BS

I am an all out Polaris guy, but I have ridden both the xp chassis and the new M chassis, and i would def go with the Cat! they handle so well! normally it takes some getting used to a new sled, the M chassis takes about 5 minutes and your a pro on it. I have probably put in about 5 hours total on a skidoo XP, and still havent figured it out, just dont like them... either Cat or RMK!

XP!

I have been riding with 3 cats the past couple of weekends and have traded sleds with them. My vote is solid on the XP. I am 260 lbs with a SLP'd setup XP. The other guys are 155 to 170lbs. There is no friggin comparison the xp will put 100' on a hill past the cats! This is what I have seen the last couple of weeks. The power on the cats seem way down to me. I Jumped the sleds and that seemed good on the landings. I dont like the way they handle at all but I am used to the XP.

were these cats 09's or the older ones because the 09's will hang right with the xp's. I ride with 2 xp's and they have yet to pull my 09 M8 with slp pipe.

Blah Blah Blah

ITS NOT ABOUT THE SLED, ITS ABOUT THE RIDER !!! You can have the best sled in the world and be able to do JACK chit with it.. and vise versa... The sled is only as good as the rider !!!

Exactly!! All sleds these days are pretty awesome. Depending on conditions and rider, you are going to see different results every time.

For example.......I am 6' 4" 230lbs before gear. I ride an 09 xp 154. You get some guy on an 09 m8 that wieghs 140 and he may be able to highmark me. Does that mean the M is a better sled?????

What does that have to do with the differences between the 2 sleds? I didn't ask which one was "better," I asked what the differences are that riders have noticed.

Differences

XP pros
Snappier, plus more overall power
lighter
VERY rider forward, like I was saying before.......it seems like the track starts way at the front of the sled so it gets up on the snow really nice.
Awesome suspension

cons
reliability is not going to be as good as the cat
wierd balance point for carving and throwing the sled around. When you are pulling the sled over it takes quite a bit of effort to pull it over and keep it there. Hard to get used to. Makes the sled feel heavy. Im still playing with suspension to see if it can be made better.

Cat pros
Excellent engines, reliable and lots of mod potenial
very easy chassis to ride for everyone
09s are pretty light

cons
suspension not as good for bumps and drops IMO
not as snappy of power

Awwww come on Mike. You gotta give the old Revs a little more time than that. Once you get the "fit", it's all over. More fun than you can handle. LOL. Kidding aside, both sleds are great. Not really a lick of difference IMO. Shoot, they are calling me a prostitute cause I'll ride anything. Rev, M900, D8 Polaris or Tapex. LOL

I hear you are coming down for a little ride. Cool. I'll have Mark let me know when and maybe we can all hook up.

I'm just doing my first Doo 2500 mile rebuild (I have a Rev) - mid season because the engine was making some 'strange noises' the weekend before last. From what I've heard, be prepared to do the crank and/or pistons roughly every 2500 miles with the Doo 800. I've always been a Doo fan but getting towed off the mountain SUCKS! Luckily we got out of the area we were in and were back on the road when it decided to quit.

So now I'm researching M8s - it sounds like the '09 Sno Pro is the way to go...

This might be a tad off the subject, but I believe that the analogy is relevent so I'll try to keep it short. Back in the 90's my main activity was mtn. biking. The big thing for that back in the day was who had the lightest bike. I spent thousands, and thousands of dollars on everything from brake levers to wheel sets. After all that, I was the clear winner in my group and had the lightest bike. I was the happiest dude in the world. Once the bike was off the scale, and in the mountain, it was a nightmare. Sure I could climb up a cliff, but then I started folding my super lightweight chainrings into tacos, as well as my $1,500 wheelset, and that was even before we got to the downhill. I was terrified of even being on the bike when decending. Now, my new bike weighs double what my old bike did, and I brag about that. I have even replaced components out with beefier heavier ones, but I am no longer afraid to ride it like I was with my old one. Then there was the time when my brother's friend stuffed a chevy 383 stroker into an old mazda RX-7... no I won't go into that. Anyway, people will do all sorts of things to have bragging rights of owning the lightest "_______." But, once your main objective becomes lightweight at all costs... your going lose the durability,IMO. Anyway, I'm 6'0 and weigh in at somewhere just north of 230, without my gear on. I would love to ride an XP in the mountains, and I hear they are a blast to jump with, but before I buy one, I would like to see some longer real mtn. "testing" on that chasis by some bigger fella's. But now all that I care about is that my "heavy" m sled can (and has) taken some serious blows without a wimper. I would like to dump the stock seat for a boss though, not because of the weight loss of course, just that the stock seat does suck:D

Good question. My answer is: I weigh 280 w/o gear and my XP is holding up great. When they came out with the XP BRP advertised it was 30% stronger. I don't know if it's true, but mine has had no problems, and I like to jump, cornice drop, etc.

Well now looking at what I said before, an M8 ready to ride at 440, doesn't quite add up. I know this M8 had at least a little gas and oil in it, cause it was running. Picture below proves it's light though!

Someone asked how many '09 REV's I've worked on... 0. I'm not that mechanically inclined :) My first day here, though, just last week, I went back to the shop to see what was going on there. I saw 0 cats, one or two each of Polaris and Yamaha, and a LOT of Doos. The mechanic back there even admitted that most of what he works on are Doos, and it's been the same story everywhere I turn. Yeah, they're light, yes, they perform well. But go around to your local dealers, ask them what they have to fix the most, and most of the time the answer will be Ski-Doo

You may be right. But have you considered that when Doo outsells the three other brands combined, statistically they will also have more getting repaired? Everyone seems to forget that.

Interesting weekend. 24"-28" new snow. Great base. Fairly heavy snow. The M8s put a mark about 20-30 feet higher on the hill over my XP. I was very surprised with how well the track worked on the Cat. Really comes on top of the snow.

Kudos to Cat.

if i had to do it all over again xp all the way slp kit mtn tamer rear skid clutching gunna take you a turbo cat to touch it

Better go back and read your statistics again...............but it was good for a laugh :face-icon-small-ton:beer;

I am going to play the devils advocate here and say to buy the XP and never look back. They are soo light its rediculous for a stock machine. With a bit of clutch work and a pipe and can they are just darn near untouchable on the mountain. Have ridden with M series, dragons, revs and xps...a properly setup xp is the sled to beat. Bar none. And the notion that the other brands "feel" as light is just really not accurate. Weight is weight and it is the enemy. Buy the light one, get the easy weight off of it and Have some Fun!!!:D

LOL, never look back until it's in the shop with a baked engine...

well i ride doo and like my rev. but i was in a group of guys with both a xp 800 with a 146 and a 09 m8 153 . they raced on several different hills and on flats. im not sure how they handle but the 09 m8 killed the xp everytime. but im sure the m8 handled great cuz the guy was throwing it around

m8 or xp

09 m8 162 slp pipe 2 cool vents no boondocker, tighten front track shock 1/2 inch, best dam powder sled period ,only thing that will beat it in the powder at buffalo will be a turbo

Nicko, you flatter me...........

I'm the guy who had his week beating up the XP and many others. I'm way older than everyone too. Not too much for riding skills. The M was soooo good to me. It had 100 miles , and no dealer prep. just as it comes from the factory.
The XP however, has been worked on steady since it was new last season.
The belt fix...New Shockwave secondary, the brace, new motor, etc. He brought six belts with, but his belt problem seemed to be over. Want to buy a thousand dollars worth of Doo belts?
I think the XP's track needs help. In good snow the Cat shines brighter, but in hero snow there still was no way the XP could hang in there.
There seems to be slow M-8s too, as some of them were slower than the new one. Is it just the track? Some guys think so. There is a problem with malfuntioning pipe sensors. This retards timming and may add fuel. Fix it and reign suppreme.
