2016-2017 Island Park / West Yellowstone SNOW REPORT

Headed down in the morning for our annual IP sled trip. Six of us this year. Winter storm warning in effect! Don't know if I'll sleep tonight!

Been trying to get to IP since Sunday. Had to stay in Jamestown Sunday night because of roads being closed. Headed south from Jamestown.at 11am Monday to SD then headed west on 12. It took us over 12hrs to get to miles city. Should be in IP around 6am. Hope the snow is going to be worth it.

I90 was shut down at chamberlain Sunday night. Probably til about noon the next day it was still closed. We took about 20 miles of gravel from Chamberlain then hwy 248 to keep headed west. Made it to kadoka and was one of the first ones back on the hwy.
Snow looks very deep thru town when we showed up at midnight. Was lightly snowing too.
Watch for elk in the late nite 191 travels

Unfortunate timing. Hope everyone made it safe and sound. Riding condition updates would be nice.

Snow Report for 12/28 We picked up another nine inches last night, it's currently about five degrees, and we had some breezy conditions today. Someone posted once that Island Park never disappoints, and it looks like It'll be holding true for this season also

We rode Keg Springs yesterday morning with the kids. Easily over the hood in most spots. But not much base at all. In the afternoon we took the family up to Two Top. TONS of traffic, assuming from the holidays. It's been great so far but the wind down in the valley is pretty cool for the kids.

I've discovered that I can actually boondock with my 5yo daughter on the sled with me so we had some fun times and lots of face shots!

My wife took her freeride out and actually got it stuck and figured it out on her own. Great trip so far. Tomorrow the guys are going out, that should be the highlight!

Glad to hear you and your's are all having a GOOD TIME.
We are trying to decide where to go ride on Saturday now.
Wanted to go hit Jefferson, but the Avy Danger is "High" and I just don't want to take the risk this early on in the season.

Enjoy the gas tank partner, mines 17 now.
We spent five days in IP over Christmas.
She was talking about how fun/scary those
days were. I learned to hold her with my knees,
had her trained to push back into me to avoid face
To the bars. She climbed/jumped some insane
stuff with me.
Had all 8 of us on separate sleds
this year. Youngest is 8 and rocked the powder.

How good is it up on lionshead ? Last year we spend 4 days up there and we're coming a week earlier (on Monday) just curious

they dropped the avy danger from a 4 to a 3 this morning

Snowpack and Avalanche Discussion:

http://www.mtavalanche.com/danger-map

Lionhead area near West Yellowstone

Recent avalanche activity has one thing in common – avalanches are occurring on wind loaded slopes. Yesterday, Alex was in Cooke City and observed multiple large natural avalanches that took place over the past few days (photo). Other skiers in the area also observed recent natural activity. Most slides are taking place on wind loaded slopes leeward to W-SW winds (photo). The larger slides appear to be failing on the facet-curst combination near the base of the snowpack. This facet-crust combination is most prevalent on upper elevation slopes facing north through east.

Slopes do not need this facet-crust combination to be unstable. Weak snow near the ground plagues the snowpack on all aspects and elevations across the advisory area. Doug found this layer to be reactive in stability tests at Bacon Rind and the Taylor Fork earlier in the week (video, video). Fortunately, this layer isn’t highly reactive on all slopes. Yesterday, my partners and I skied in Beehive Basin and found good snow quality and better stability on non-wind loaded slopes. Facets near the ground were a concern, but they weren’t propagating in stability tests. We felt comfortable skiing slopes up to thirty five degrees in non-wind loaded terrain (video).

Today, human triggered avalanches remain likely on wind loaded slopes which have a CONSIDERABLE avalanche danger. Non-wind loaded slopes have a MODERATE avalanche danger.

I was over around Keg/Reas yesterday and there is quite a bit of snow. There seems to be a base finally setting up, but there is a lot of wind loading going on. We saw no evidence of sliding where we were. Still lots of good snow out there!

BTW, Dry Canyon is not quite passable yet. Need more snow. It gets pretty exciting.... lol

If everything goes well we should be in IP early Monday night.
Where should we shop for groceries? West Yellowstone? Island Park?
